Console Update

there's dissatisfied people for over 10 months now only with odyssey, not to mention with beyond era which was a bugfest also.

i know you want to be fed but at least use arguments that makes sense, please.

@edit
actually i'm too old for this, congratulations for being the first person i've ever ignored on this forums (and i wanted to ignore SO MANY people already)
They're a troll, their only posts have been today effectively laughing at console players.

Critical updates means to physically keep it running on the console, not content or even bug fixes. and honestly, I wouldn't bet even that will last the year.
Yeah, given the track record I don't blame you for the lack of faith at this point. I'm still hoping FDev come through and give console players an opportunity to migrate accounts to PC.

Yep.

Content creators rubbishing the game since their little "roundtable". Concerted efforts by players to review bomb it, and drive Frontier's share prices down. Constant insults of their employees incessantly on the forums. Developers and CMs getting threatened and harassed on their personal social medias.

Every single person with a soapbox decided to pile on.

And now, their share price HAS tanked, Odyssey's been more or less blacklisted by gamers, the noisy section of the community got what they wanted.

Likely one of the side effects of all this is that Elite, going forward, now has a massively reduced budget. And cutting consoles probably came down to that. Not that they don't want to (again, see Kay Ross' tweet as evidence of that) but that the choice to do so was taken away from them.

Absolutely not saying that they're "victims" in any of this, certainly not letting them off the hook by releasing this FAR too early. @The Atlas is bang on saying this went from a hurried alpha to full release FAR too soon, and that was wrong.

But lads like Yamiks, D2EA, Hawkes, and all the others who are now moping about did their part too.
Yamiks is a toxic clown who milked this game for hatesubs for at least a year before he finally got binned off from here and from any official recognition when FDev had had enough of him. His role in any downfall would be minimal because to suggest otherwise would be affording him a level of importance which he just doesn't have but he certainly contributed to the peanut gallery. He was the Richard Hammond of streamers though, an irritating little sycophant scampering around the big boy's table.

And given the fact that Elite in it's entirity is no longer profitable, check the steam numbers for example. I don't expect this trend of "Minimally viable product" to change simply because they are doing away with console development. What's going to happen is they are going to continue the way they have, and in 6 months, you're going to be, what? you guys did away with consoles, WHY aren't things improving? Because again, developing games in it of itself is no longer a profit center for Fdev, it's a cost center.
How do you know its 'no longer profitable'? Do you work for fdev in the accounting dept? No you dont. This may boost PC sales and checking the steam numbers for an 8yr old game compared to the game everyone is using to compare (NMS if course) you may be forgetting not everyone plays on steam. At the moment even on Steam there are more people playing ED that EVE, and according to MMO Population site it is still in the top 15 (currently 10th or 11th place) and is in fact the highest ranked space combat/trading/exploration MMO . Yes its a shame they have had to do this and yes of course its going to upset a load of people but they (console gamers) can still play elite up to horizons just without the FPS and its a big galaxy out there. Also he does say 'Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates' and one of the com managers says We are exploring options for transfers but at present have nothing to announce. That doesnt mean they wont do it it just means they have nothing to announce.

Migration of CMDR progress to a PC CMDR of our choice … then we can merge with our existing PC accounts (if we have them) or y’all can bid for our stuffz …
We don't want your stuffz, we want you to use them on transfer to PC account.

They need do announce and release exiting stuff to bring more players.
In the financial report (end of their h2), Fdev committed with 5 year development.
Let's hope they have many things to announce. :)

Yeh, I don’t want you to have my stuffz either … 🤪

I just want to transfer my PS CMDRs stuff to my PC CMDR … not overwrite my PC CMDR.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
Wow... thanks but no thanks. Half of my current xbox friendslist and I are new players to console elite dangerous thanks to game pass. This is a horribly short sighted decision fdev. The least you could've done was make it current gen (Series S/X n ps5 only) to give us console players at least a chance to enjoy the new content. But canceling it on console altogether after getting a bunch of new players interested with game pass? Feels like I just got baited and dropped like an undersized fish on a line... no thanks, I won't buy the game again for PC (even tho my 3080 would chew it up and spit it out) and I'll never buy another frontier game. Thanks for nothing fdev. I'm just glad I didn't get into this game when it launched as my frustration would be infinitely worse. Respect to all Commanders, I will miss this game.

Thanks for nothing fdev. #angry #Disappointed

P.s. just a suggestion. Don't get your game promoted and hyped up on a service like game pass just to nuke it a couple months later. Especially if it isn't free. Going to see if I can get a refund now.

The only mistake I think fdev made was launching elite on consoles.
If they had continued to focus on the PC, there would not be this horde of perpetually dissatisfied whiners now. :)

Pretty sure it were a good decision on behalf of profits, as at the beginning Elite were not that well known game even among PC players, so they needed to source customers also from other platforms.

Now I guess they have enough PC players so that losing (part of) console base is no longer that much of an issue, especially if it were a dead end street anyways from technical or other reasons to spent money into.

After all FD is a business, that needs profits, and obviously they could not find it even from new gen consoles.

did they lie or mislead? Or just shout really loud about actual things that are true ...either objectively or subjectively?

Unless they fabricated what they've been complaining about ...they're not "doing their part" in this. Unless they lied and made up false information / content ...the current state of elite dangerous is 100% fdev's doing.

In the world of cause and effect, the response from the players did not cause the game to get bugs, did not cause the developers to take too long to fix them, did not cause the developer to stop communicating or stop being as involved with the community, did not cause the developer to ignore feedback (when they bothered to look for feedback), they did not direct fdev to shift the game in a way that led to a 50% reduction in performance ...and they certainly didn't cause fdev to slow new content to a crawl and waste resources implementing game mechanics nobody wanted (exo-biology scanner minigame).

So what part are they doing in producing that? The part where these issues are more widely known and the discontent in the playerbase is more well known? Would we magically be in a better place if such visible airing of dirty laundry wasn't done? Or would we be in the same place, just with less posts from Braben when there's especially bad news to deliver?
