Console Update

If the market isn't there to support a full port/development, fair enough. But surely there has to be a way to transfer the accounts, even if it's bringing on a few dozen temporary employees to do it manually.
Surely a program can be written to convert console to PC accounts.. Maybe just (barring commander name / id) conflicts automatically enable the login on PC, and BH is your uncle..

I never expected Odyssey on console. I knew the logistics were impossible from the start given the controls you’ll need.

But to completely drop consoles just because you can’t get Odyssey to work without any option for console players to FULLY MIGRATE to PC is absolute !!! Your company is basically telling me that I have to throw 5 years of progress out the window and accept just my “value”?? How does that even remotely make sense?? I can’t access half the stuff I currently can wether I have the credits or not because my RANKS and PERMITS will all be erased!?

Console players DESERVE FULL MIGRATION!!!!

I sure hope for FDevs sake that they have spent the near year since Odyssey release coming up with a plan B for console players. It would be great if after the launch debacle they decided to try and get it to work on console but at the same time put a plan in place to work on a way to transfer players from the console to PC with everything intact, not just a transfer of the credit value of the players assets. It would be just the kind of gesture that might redeem the situation.

Something I have wondered, do console players buy cosmetics like PC players, cause what happens to those when transferred to PC?

Cosmetics bought with Arx do not transfer. They literally only give you the credits after basically selling everything. I was a bit perturbed when I did the transfer from PS to Xbox, but hadn’t bought too many cosmetics. Thankfully I held off spending any more money on them waiting for this news.

I think this is a great decision. Elite Dangerous is a PC game and to be able to develop this game further it must cut itself from a console limitations.
I believe PCs low performance may have something to do with a fact that it was limited by what they tried to achieve in console coding. With out consoles holding them down, sky is a limit for Elite Dangerous now. I'm confident we will soon see big performance improvements and much more content...MUCH MORE !!

They were already working on pc only, after 10 updates it is still not good lol. I can't wait to see the disappointment on your little boy's face roflmao

This announcement smacks of an underlying intent FDev is keeping quiet about. First, as Odyssey release approached, VR gameplay was abandoned, then Odyssey's initial release is a disaster and it's announced, "not yet for console, but we're working on it." Nearly a year later, and after near-silence on development progress, we get this announcement, and the very, very visible lack of any announcement or foresight on account transfers from console to PC, other than "We're looking into it..."

I'm less concerned about what Braben said and more about what wasn't said. Let's be honest, not many in the community didn't see this coming, but the account transfer omission is extremely telling. This subject has to have been brought up by someone, an executive, community manager, a lead developer - someone, in the course of making this decision. How many times has the community been told, "We're looking into it..." followed by deafening silence until further bad news broke? Was FDev ever working on a console release for Odyssey, and how much dev time-investment (and therefore, money) was sunk into console before it was abandoned? I have doubts it was significant.

This is not how a game studio that is viable and healthy acts. This is "trimming and leaning out" in preparation for a financial move - an acquisition. I've worked at software companies before, and gone through these pre-acquisition stages. Make your product(s) and balance sheet look as good as possible, with as little investment as possible, in the hopes of attracting that whale bold enough to take the risk. Get lean, milk the software sales for all you can to boost numbers, then sell it off when that magic number is offered.

FDev is looking for a stopping point ahead of a sale. They might have minor features and updates in the pipeline, but I doubt there will be anything more on account transfers because it costs too much money in dev time & other resources to make happen, something FDev will never say publicly. Same goes for fixing the multitude of performance and gameplay issues plaguing this title. What was FDev's response (for example), about the issues with material grinding? "We're looking into it..." Since then, nothing.

Yes Braben's on record for saying a sale isn't in the works. But how can anyone trust what he says? In Odyssey alone: Communcation with the community will get better, until they reversed course in Dec '21. VR was coming, until it was abandoned. Then console was coming, until today when we find out it too has been shelved.

Should we believe in FDev now?

My response: "I'm looking into it..."

According to Steam survey current consoles are more powerful than most peoples gaming PC's.
"Console Limitations" are an outdated excuse.

They were working on PC only but having consoles (code) in mind. Now they don't need to worry about it anymore. Basically whatever they did for PC they new they will eventually have to transfer that to consoles and that was creating limit of what they can do for PC. I'm sorry for consoles players but I think Elite Dangerous should stay PC only game especially now with growing amount of competition. Consoles create limits to what they can do and they must account for future new consoles models release. PC will always be a PC.

To be honest, I don't believe Frontier has much of a choice but to go this route. They are a business, and the bottom line matters. In order for them to survive they need revenue, and the bulk of that comes from new customers. To spend development resources on maintaining multiple platforms, on hardware that is quite dated, just doesn't make sense when they need to compete against many impressive looking and recently released competitive products that have been built for the latest hardware. Games these days just aren't made to last over generations of hardware. Frontier is unique in their effort to make Elite what it is.

Let's face it, Odyssey needs work or the entire product will die, and Frontier needs to allocate their development resources accordingly. I believe that they have made this decision to have the best shot at capturing the interest of new players so that Elite will be around for a long time.

And I also believe that this decision was not made lightly, and was made very recently, so no, there is not an immediate plan in place to port console players to PC. But this will come. Others have already mentioned that Sony and Microsoft will definitely provide hurdles to overcome for players to be moved off their platforms.

All consoles are the same, all PCs are different. You must meet consoles limitations to be able to release a product on their platform. Do you realize how many game would be so much better if company didn't decided to release them on consoles and because of that they had to limit the game to console limitation. Good example is Bethesda, just because of their games like Skyrim or Fallout 4 are single player they release 2 different versions of the game, one for consoles and one for PC, now go and try, see the difference.

I am a PC player, and we are not your enemy, as a VR player, I feel your pain. WRT you being a veteran, thank you for your service sir. As for FDev joining forces with games workshop, thay are already collaborating on FDev making warhammer games, amke of that what you will.
Most PC players have been good. I detest the ones that are saying "This is a good thing. because they can focus on making the game better for US."

With thousands of hours played on PS since 2017 I think the minimum that FDev can do is transfer console accounts to PC, even if that means console players need to purchase an odyssey PC account. When I say transfer accounts I mean progress in ranks, material gathering, engineering unlocks, permits, credits, fleet carriers, ships, paint jobs, anything purchased on the frontier store, arks, etc. The whole account. I doubt it is an easy thing and developer resources will have to be diverted to accomplish this. It even might take some time and we might have to wait in line to have it done, but it will be well worth the time and effort for FDev to show the entire player base that they care about thier players. Killing consoles and then leaving the players high and dry would show investors that the company lacks the ability to manage situations and plan for eventually. FDev needs to develop more good will with the player base and investors after the rocky last year, and taking the time to do what is right by console players would show true leadership and business savvy.

I got news for you. The whole "console holds back pc" thing is rubbish. The PC is both the highest and lowest benchmark for games. They still have to make sure people on old PCs that could run the original game can play the updates. Are they going to start telling people they have to upgrade their pc after an update makes theirs no longer good enough. I would be ed if a game I was playing got an update and suddenly I can't play it because my computer that was good enough yesterday is not good enough today.
