Console Update

Absolutely gutted for console players. As a PC player i’d be incredibly down if they withdrew support as I’m fully invested in all things Elite. Sadly I had a feeling it was coming. I may draw flak here but i think under the circumstances and taking into account how things have gone over the last year and the impact on financials, I’d have made the same decision. I think it’s a brave move by DB, but a necessary one. Still doesn’t take away the anguish console players feel but i‘d expect DB and FDev in general to be down about this too. You know if the limitation is technical then I’d actually be relieved as part of the Dev team as i’d have spent time trying to figure out what was possible only to hit dead ends. A weight off the shoulders if that makes sense. Just being honest here.

My next concern is the upcoming roadmap and what’s coming next. Would it be worth getting some feedback from the community? For example should it be all in for legs and ship interiors EVA, derelicts etc or back up and focus on Elite’s strengths and start introducing new planet types. Perhaps this isn’t the thread for that discussion but as an invested and paying customer, these are the things on my mind.

i will just say i am shocked given the year fdev have had that they are abandoning two more platforms, it also does give an indication on the future of Elite that each new dlc will see a requirements hike that in this case no console will be able to keep up with. I think its future proofing as currently they might get it to work on series X and ps5 but the next one wont.

its a shame that its come to this and we will see loads of people abandon the whole game because of it as well.
And there is basically the problem, its not Fdevs fault that Consoles are a million miles behind even the most basic PC, they were never intended to be on the same level but developed as a plug and play game experience.

Could we at least get a yes/no to if Raxxla really is in game? And can we please have access to Col70 and other restricted sectors now that there will be no more expansion or story arches on console?

I'm sure that some (most?) console commanders were invested and paying customers, but that cuts no ice with Frontier.

It is not a question of Quality (graphic I suppose). It's a question of gameplay, of depth, of features... The game is getting more and more complex with the ship interiors that are coming... I'm not surprised that the development on consoles has stopped.
Last time they talked about ship interiors they said "we don't see any value on that" and "there will not be ship interiors in the near future". What are you talking about? So far Odyssey just got fixes and more fixes. The scorpion and the rocket launcher wielding security officers on settlements was the only significant "complex" game mechanic that Odyssey got since release, not to mention that a lot of content should have been there on release.

Buy the console Steamdeck?

Buy what you want, mostly what you can. I've reserved it and I'm waiting for it, I wouldn't play Elite Dangerous with it because I play with my PC in my office and joysticks and in VR. But it is a viable solution contained in an acceptable price. And it won't change the habits of gamers in their living room.

It isn't viable because Odyssey won't work on it.

You're suggesting the present generation of consoles are a million times behind even the most basic PC? I suspect you're being economical with the truth.

No.

You WILL do it. After spitting the face of every single console player for everything they have ever done for you.

The very least you can do is transfer their saves over. Completely intact.

Of course, I say that but you've already decided none of us matter. Not surprised if you don't ever at any point, never lift a finger into your "looking for solutions" and just ignore it.
I understand you are posting in angry mode, but they have not said no.

Prior to this support would if asked move an individual account across platforms but the process lost some items what I don’t know I have only migrated from base game on Mac to Horizons on PC following the smoke coming out of my Mac.

Now they need to come up with a workable bulk transfer mechanism for potentially thousands of accounts and it will need to handle almost everything, certainly everything that has been engineered, this is likely to take a little time.

It might have been better to have withheld the announcement until they had worked out the transfer mechanism and got it coded but some people here were getting upset about the communications blackout.

Now that they have officially made the best decision for the development of this fantastic game with great potential, it will evolve now, I'm sure. I'm very hopeful !

The anguish expressed by those players says to me they are, so I’d agree. The latter part of your comment, well l’m not so sure. What if the issue is technical limitations and they can’t make it work. Put yourself in their shoes, what would you do, if despite all the questions posed the answer from your team is that it just can’t be done with the tools we’ve got.

I don't think anyone is happy with this news (even the share price has taken a minor hit since the announcement) but it was inevitable and hopefully Frontier will now have a solid foundation to build back from

I do think free transfers from console to PC should have been explored and announced along with this announcement though. Saying you're "looking into it" now is no use as you'll likely have no console players left to transfer if/when you set it up down the road (and I say that as a pc player)
I agree with what you say as a console player. I was expecting that to happen and several months ago I got a gaming laptop for odyssey. I even decommissioned my carrier recently. I don’t expect to have a full account transfer. Now we can transfer all out credits so it is still something.

Wow. Big news and I can fully understand the radio-silence that has been going on while they came to this decision.

I will share my sympathies for the console players (and hope they can get some way to move over to PC Odyssey in the future) but remind those losing their minds over this, that Horizons is still a damn fine Elite game and i certainly will be playing that on PC for a good few years while work carries on on Odyssey.

Thank you for making a difficult decision Sir David (and Frontier) and i hope this allows you to focus on getting the best out of Elite going forward.

I sure hope for FDevs sake that they have spent the near year since Odyssey release coming up with a plan B for console players. It would be great if after the launch debacle they decided to try and get it to work on console but at the same time put a plan in place to work on a way to transfer players from the console to PC with everything intact, not just a transfer of the credit value of the players assets. It would be just the kind of gesture that might redeem the situation.

Something I have wondered, do console players buy cosmetics like PC players, cause what happens to those when transferred to PC?
poor plan "b" imo.

Then I wouldn't have been reckless enough as a company to indicate that I thought it was possible until I was fairly sure it was possible. And this isn't the first time Frontier have done this.

Frontier keep sacrificing elements for the good of the game, but there's not much left to go.

Yeh, I don’t want you to have my stuffz either … 🤪

I just want to transfer my PS CMDRs stuff to my PC CMDR … not overwrite my PC CMDR.
I suspect it will be much more straightforward and therefore less likely to mess up for them to move your PS CMDRs stuff into a brand new alternate PC CMDR for you so you end up like several of my friends with multiple CMDRs available on the same system.
Remember with potentially loads wanting this the process needs to be as automated as possible or it will take forever.

Just logged in on PS4 and sat wondering what to do in ED today.
Usually I log in knowing what I'm gonna do for next couple of hours........

<Geat Idea!> 🥳..........and SHUTTING DOWN FC HMS Beagle V6L-G3N to ALL CMDRS (except me) in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...........byeeee, o7 Cmdrs.........
