Console Update

This all seems very bad news for everyone, including PC players. If ED is only going to work on PC's that have a very high spec, that is not going to pay the bills as I would imagine only a small percentage of PC players have that level of technology in their PC.

My PC isn't by any stretch of the imagination high-spec and runs Ody fine.

This is the bit that really interests me, many folks have way better rigs than me and have poor performance, even on foot im not getting much of a slow down.
Can it be due to area/region, quality of broadband? im no techy so genuinely interested.

I think first we need to clarify what we deem "poor" or "good", and I guess this is quite subjective. I run the game at max settings and at 1440p without the FSR garbage (gives me eye due to aliasing/blurring). Given how the game looks like, the objects on display, the geometry complexity, shadows and shaders, the game should always hit 60fps in all areas at a minimum - but it doesn't.

Given that performance barely improves when I reduce graphics settings (one of the reasons I keep it on Ultra) it seems I'm CPU limited. There's not much I can do about it until FDev optimise the game further. And they did make progress - but merely from "absolutely disastrous" to "it's ok I guess, some of the time". Maybe specific hardware combos yield better results despite on paper being weaker overall... who knows why but FDev (and even they don't seem to be able to work it out).

Others might draw the line at 30fps at lower settings on the same hardware. Since prettier, more complex games I own achieve better graphics and higher performance that suggests to me that I'm not completely unrealistic here though.

Is it really too much for consoles? How on earth does No Man's Sky work so well? You only have to play this on PS5 to see the level of detail on planets on that game in comparison to the level of detail on Elite (even on one of these super PC's!) to wonder what is so difficult.
I hate to say this but is this just the start of the death of this game on all formats if it can't expand and make money?
I see your lovely avatar and immediately hear this song in my head:

Strangely relevant.

Here's hoping that my Xbox account will transfer to PC. Loads of cosmetics and decals from years past (Xbox GPP anyone?) and my Cobra Mk.4 will be basically lost otherwise. There's also my account name, "Lori Jameson" the fun I've had with that over the years.
Have you checked that there isn't already a cmdr Lori Jameson over on PC?

Cartoons dont need too much computing power...
I mean... NMS even works with PS4 VR... this speaks volumes about the gfx qualities of the NMS Cartoon Show
While NMS is indeed simpler in its visual style compared to Elite, I wouldn't boast too much about Elite's visual fidelity - some assets look like they're straight out of a Playstation 2 game in terms of textures and polycount.

I´m sure that this game has been in decline for some time, but now in a more pronounced way. It has been shrinking for a long time. We have left behind the best project managers of the game, the Mac players, the VR ones are struggling about, now the console ones. And whoever believes that after the commercial failure of Odyssey this is good for the PC version, start learning what the sunk cost fallacy is, and note the bursatile situation and the rumors about Frontier.
"The Mac" players, oh yeah such a tectonic shift! Didn't you just read the post? They want to move New Era forward, this is about focusing development to ramp up new content to bring in more customers ie too soon to label it as a "commercial failure".

I dont think the "cartoon" jibe is about textures and polycounts

Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.
Until the servers are shutdown because the player base has dwindled. When developers put a project in 'maintenance mode' the closure becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

As someone who bought, played and loved the original Elite on the Beeb and was delighted to find it on XBOX last year, it's now time to say goodbye. Fun while it lasted, but I shalln't be going over to PC - too much money for one game and it's not worth investing any more time in a game that's moved into 'zombie' mode. Time to find something else to play.

o7 Cmdrs.

What kind of new/future non-Odyssey content (with only Horizon as dependency) will be present for Horizon PC version but not Horizon console? Do you have examples?

The only "new content" I can think of is POI's, stations and outposts spawning here and there with galnet context story but they seem more relevant to the galaxy sim than something running on the game client.

Its about the code merge, so universal lighting, new planet tech. As they will want to open up access to new planet types in future, that can only get more complicated.

Is this a promise: "Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates" ?
Then how do you "focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase" without making the as-it-is-now game become too outdated to continue? Will Horizons not stop working for PC version too or is the plan to "up" horizons on PC to Odyssey for free and then only end the life and support of the console version?

Yet No Mans Sky still manages to do a PS5 version that adds a ton of extra detail and framerate, whilst still supporting the older PS4 VR version - incredible!
@Tod
So what? You have to rememmber that NMS i also SINGLE PLAYER game so it will work forever. What you will do with such cool graphics in ED if they stop servers? Nothing, you will say bye bye, game over. Game will not be playable while NMS will be.

Besides NMS its not only graphics - destroying world, interaction with many things in game. Do you have it in ED no. NMS code is more complicated in many ways than ED bro.

For me it looks like Fdev till now can't fix ED:O and there is very long road to do this, I bet till now they didn't touch console code because they were focused to fix PC while this fix is partialy and not even close to smooth game.

Sounds like we may be keeping you from NMS.

Enjoy.
