Console Update

Feel sorry for console breathern, but at least we can finally get out the console cul-de-sac we have been in for the last 5 years, it killed the delevopment speed of the game IMO, that said with the extra income from consoles ED and frontier might of not survived let's hope frontier offer free copies of the base game and transfers.

Regarding critical updates, we need more precision on what those are and aren't. As an example, is something in the likes of this below not be rolled out to console players?
  • The Class C Operations Multi Limpet Controller was incorrectly showing as Class F.
    • This has now been addressed for Horizons Commanders."

What kind of new/future non-Odyssey content (with only Horizon as dependency) will be present for Horizon PC version but not Horizon console? Do you have examples?

The only "new content" I can think of is POI's, stations and outposts spawning here and there with galnet context story but they seem more relevant to the galaxy sim than something running on the game client.
Horizon is a dead end. Any new content will be built on Odyssey some stuff might make it into Horizon but I wouldn't hold me breath.

Too bad the PC players don't care enough to petition for us. It'd be nice to see the PC community back up the console players for once in their lives. Maybe stage a protest. No one on the servers until a promise to help console players is made? Doubt it will ever happen.

But it's hard to say that this isn't just utter, top rubbish.

Show me the list of petitions for ED that have worked.

Actually Horizon content in Odyssey performs exactly the same as in Horizon.
Are you sure?
Here we go: EDH & EDO - notice the FPS counter... (all in 4K mostly Ultra)

The same? No, EDH gets around 50% more FPS than EDO, in the very same "Horizons" scene.

Well this sucks. I don't have a thousand quid lying around to spend on a PC, and even if I did that'd be for only one game. I have a family, and in our house console gaming is a social activity. The PlayStation is in the living room, we watch each other play and follow along with games. Even if I could afford a PC I'd have to be shut in my room on my own.

This makes me really sad - not having anything to look forward to means it's game over. I played on my Atari ST as a kid, the 'space game' idea has been a dream for so long, I spent countless hours planning and designing my own; so I was really excited to find ED on PS4. I'm pretty disappointed.

I mean I can see why they've done it - as a software engineer myself ED reeks of bad implementation so given the niche aspect of the game they probably haven't got the money to spare on the complexity they've given themselves to port it.

I'd miss my trophy bobbleheads, do like them bobbing around on the flight deck, but (and I'm no developer!) it feels to me as if they could surely come up with a date and say that from that date they can transfer any console commander's cash balance and unlocks across to PC. So we could sell all our ships, and arrive on PC with a cash balance enabling us to purchase a fleet (and fleet carrier, in some cases!), and with our combat/exploration/trade ranks and our engineers unlocked. Then we'd just lose our trophies, and have to grind again for the mats to reengineer our ships. I'm pretty upset about this but that would at least give me a way back so something approaching the same experience. I have triple elite, all the engineers to G5, a carrier and over 40 ships. I could cash out to 20bn cr or so, so at least I could arrive on PC still triple elite, engineers still at G5 and rebuy a base carrier and the same ships. Sure, the engineering would be a lot but it would be an outcome which would bring me to PC. Only reason I started Elite on PC is that I work mostly from home, at the PC, so didn't want to cross the streams and be tempted to game when I should be working. I'd have been a PC Elite gamer all along had I realised they might do this to us!

Hmm, not so sure about their research though.

The initial reaction to the announcement does not seem very positive. Several players in this Elite Dangerous forum thread expressed disappointment in the decision and compared it to last year's halt of development on MacOS, which ultimately left the game unplayable on Mac platforms.

Last year!

Cartoons dont need too much computing power...
I mean... NMS even works with PS4 VR... this speaks volumes about the gfx qualities of the NMS Cartoon Show
NMS uses a VOXEL Engine, for that reason alone, you can't compare the two games technically at all. voxel engine usually needs far more resources.

We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.
Eventually that codebase will reach a point where it is no longer compatible with Horizons without (likely) serious updates. I'm assuming that FDev is eventually going to stop updating consoles when you reach that point.

When are the console servers shutting down? I'd like to be optimistic, but that's the direction this is going for us.

The issue is mate that most PC players (and i include myself) see this as a positive move for the development of the game.
I honestly feel for console folks for whom this is a massive kick in the undercarriage as ive been through many games myself that have shut down after i have invested time and money.

@Tod
So what? You have to rememmber that NMS i also SINGLE PLAYER game so it will work forever. What you will do with such cool graphics in ED if they stop servers? Nothing, you will say bye bye, game over. Game will not be playable while NMS will be.

Besides NMS its not only graphics - destroying world, interaction with many things in game. Do you have it in ED no. NMS code is more complicated in many ways than ED bro.

For me it looks like Fdev till now can't fix ED:O and there is very long road to do this, I bet till now they didn't touch console code because they were focused to fix PC while this fix is partialy and not even close to smooth game.
I was being sarcastic (in favour of NMS if you look at previous posts). It is being suggested that "console versions bring it down". Yet NMS can run on new consoles, whilst still running on old hardware - that was my point.
NMS does have multiplayer, and you can meet up with multiple players (PS4 players with PS4VR players and PC players!) and visit other peoples bases they have made.

So why can't ED do that?
