Console Update

So any idea why they would call the last Horizons update was a Oddesy compatibility update ?Do they honestly know what they are doing from one day to the next ?
Presumably for one of two reasons:

1: They knew Horizons was going to need continual maintainence as a separate fork with ongoing access to the BGS, and therefore would require additional work to make it compatible going forwards, so this is to be expected.

2: Sunk cost fallacy and/or an unwavering belief they'd be able to get over this one last insurmountable problem preventing Odyssey from working on console led to them keeping up all the development to support it right until they conceded defeat on that one thing everything else depended on.

Thinking more like the sexual harassment among Ubisoft's dev teams, or the possibility that Activision might have helped covered up a murder by one of their managers?

Generally being terrible at communication and failing to deliver a promised expansion is by no means anywhere close to the most disgusted any development studio has ever managed to make me. To say one has never felt so disgusted with a development studio as they do over this just shows off a complete lack of awareness of the stuff going on in broader game development outside of Frontier.

My Spider sense is tingling. I guess it's a misunderstanding, when you wrote:

Oh, you haven't experienced a fraction of the depths they can sink to.

It sounded like you are talking about the depths FDEV can sink to.

All the Horizon updates since the launch of Odyssey have been called 'Odyssey compatibilty update' at least they have on my Playstation. I guess they probably didn't feel like renaming it 'Console cancellation update'. ;)

Indeed, it's basically what they've committed to for the foreseeable future with Horizons too, with every update essentially being a "Horizons not asplode in your face bc of something we added to Odyssey" update.

Its because ED on Consoles is ALREADY Odyssey compatible.
Look at bottom left of start up main menu - on mine it is:

Elite:Dangerous Odyssey Compatibility update[3.8.405] . FID: b3krdy4

On my
Elite
Dangerous
HORIZONS tm

Main Menu on login screen

What this means to me, is that half the work has already been done as ED is already running in EDO compatible mode.
It suggests that the projected revenue from EDO for consoles was previously enough to cover the porting of EDO from PC to consoles.
That is no longer the case, so they have obviously pulled the plug as it would generate a loss financially (dev costs higher than projected income???).

EDIT - that laughing face in Elite Dangerous above sums it up nicely, though it wasn't intentional - I typed in : D, so I am not editing it out 😛

Elite was never FPS - this seems to me too far from what I know I wanted from this game. Yes I want to walk round ships and bases, but that would have been enough - and it wouldn't have meant ditching a large percentage of a loyal player base doing this.
So you think having first person abilities but to disallow shooting was the solution for Odyssey to be a success? Just walk around bases and ships. I don't think so, it reads like a very selectively cherry picked scenario to hang your argument on. Plus, we can walk around bases, walking around in ships was categorically stated to not be in Odyssey from the get go, though I guess we have to have FP movement to get to that point so Odyssey brings the game a step closer that reality by default too.

Horizons (on PC) is still the better version of the game, graphically and performance wise, is this going to ever change?
I can honestly say that it isn't, and that everything good about Horizons is in Odyssey and what isn't is better. Game performance is a red herring otherwise we'd still be playing wireframe graphics on an 8bit machines. As for performance, the latest patch has seen 70fps in the hangar on foot jump to 100fps, on a 2020 RTX2060 based laptop, not cutting edge hardware by any stretch, but definitely a newer CPU, I think that's an important distinction to make.

Your reference to 8bit wireframe graphics is a red herring. We're comparing Odyssey not to 8bit games but to other modern games running on the same hardware. Performance in hangars is another red herring, because Odyssey's gameplay takes place on planet surfaces, not in hangars.

I wouldn't be so sure.

ED is (8 years after launch) still their most successful and most played game. There are more active ED players than on all their other games combined.

Some day Elite will end, but I would guess they are going to abandon their less successful titles first.
But oh honey...

No-one knows what the engine is doing behind the scenes apart from self-proclaimed armchair experts who tend to insist that all of this is easy and FDev bad. So the relative performance of Odyssey vs other games is kinda moot, as more is added the specs will go up and that was the general point I was making. Though that isn't to say that things are optimal either, but.....

It was an illustration that I happened to immediately notice, that's a 30fps jump in the same scenario as before. Either way, a 30fps improvement is pretty huge if you ask me, and not to be casually dismissed in an 'achtually' type of way.

However, I didn't make note of the FC interior but it was similar IIRC, I wanted to play last night but unfortunately didn't get to, but I will see if this gain is reflected elsewhere, ie; planet surfaces. Barring settlements, I was getting around 90fps, so I will report back.

Though I am sorry that fps improvements have the opposite reaction of making you happy.
