Console Update

Funny, because in my experience the most complaints I see about ED are people who dislike the icnreasing "gameifiication" of it. Like the seeming need to turn everything into some kind of minigame regardless of it narratively fitting within the experience, etc. Which rather suggests a more balanced perspective that Frontier are trying to do it all and not succeeding as well as they could at a lot of that, displeasing both kinds of players when any particular thing stands out as detracting from their preferred type of experience.
They're damned if they do, damned if they don't as there are so many different play styles and wants competing for dev resources, which thusly gives a neverending source for gripes for those who seek them, which can yield negative results as this thread illustrates.

I'm starting to come to the conclusion that game development in this day and age, specifically pertinent to games like Elite, is starting to need to mirror how civics councils are run, and probably may do well to learn what can be applied from them in regards to the above, minus the political chicanery of course.

Only one thing... I find it ridiculous that exploiting logging to evade a (or the?) whole gameplay loop, because it is SO bad and makes no fun for literally days or weeks, is even allowed and ok with the developers. Enough said.

And don't you tell me "you don't have to do it" or even better yet "be happy that they tolerate it". You don't even have to answer in that case, because you don't get it.

There is no reason to accept this even as someone who wants the "experience". For a good experience I find immersion mandatory, and what kind of immerision is logging off and on again? Maybe someone can explain this to me? "Wow... I'm in the middle of the nebulae right now... well let's close the game and make it run again. That makes me feel to be inside the cockpit even more!!!"

Frontier: First Encounters was DOS only. You may be thinking of the original ports of Elite and Frontier: Elite which were on DOS, Amiga & Atari ST. Here is the timeline:

For a while I thought I were in a Shazaam-alternative university there...

So I´m pretty sure I played both Elite 2 and Frontier:Elite 2 on Atari 520ST (bought at 1987), and then FFE (Frontier First Encounters) on Amiga 500 later on it seems....

Anyways I did not have a PC until late 90´s, so I know it were not on that.
And yes I did play some Elite game named FFE....

Though everything is so fuzzy over more than 25 years, perhaps it were just some emulator-copy of the kids from my street, transferred from PC to Atari/Amiga 3,5 floppy through some hacker magic?
I honestly have no clue anymore...

Please don´t say me playing Lemmings on Atari or Amiga is just a false memory also...

Oh and yes I did nuke something, and killed a bunch of Thargoids when they asked for help.

I don´t think they had that in earlier versions of Elite before FFE, right?

From the same page:

The March 1995 edition of CU Amiga magazine featured a two-page preview of Frontier First Encounters for the Commodore machine. Curiously, only PC screenshots were included in the article, suggesting Amiga development was some way behind. Ultimately, pressure from publishers Gametek forced Frontier Developments to release the PC version before it was ready, around Easter 1995. This led to well-documented legal proceedings and in the middle of all this, the Amiga release was sadly shelved. The official reason given was the difficulty in getting the game to run at an acceptable speed on the majority of Amiga computers.

I was one looking forward to it coming out, if it did I would own it, like I do Frontier: Elite II. To be fair I missed off the Elite: II part in my original reply, but if you played FFE, which I don't doubt, it was on a PC, which I don't doubt either, unless you were privy to any work done on the in-development Amiga version at Gametek before it got canceled, which I would doubt. Though these days, with people getting Doom running at an acceptable resolution and frame rate on an Amiga 500, it would be interesting to see if someone could get FFE on an A1200 or something, though FFE is probably too niche for the effort. But still, it was a very eagerly anticipated game that never materialized unfortunately.

It depends on which version you remember playing ;) o7

Frontier Astro is brilliant - a great follow on twitter if that's your thing.

This is a review of Frontier Elite II from 29/12/93 as originally written for the teletext gaming site digitiser.

review-7-to-10.jpg

It mentions some of the main cornerstones of elite still being discussed here today : obsessive fans, console vs pc, GUI complaints & graphic issues. Luckily it was pre mainstream internet otherwise I'm sure there would be discussions of PvP.

Especailly for those of us of a certain age in the UK,the site super page 58 has an archive of the digitiser pages here with the reviews here

Any news or updates on transferring our CMDRs from Console to PC?

Still very disappointed that they weren't able to figure this out during the very long time they had until the announcement...

There are probably good reasons to drop the console, but not figuring this out before just shows a huge disrepesect towards the console community and the many hours console CMDRs sank into this game.

I am surprised as I assumed they would only start looking for a way to transfer accounts etc after they had given up on getting the game to a state where it would work on consoles.

Agreed. Full account transfers should have been obviously necessary to mollify at least some percentage of console players.

The fact they didn't have a definite yes/no answer to this in their initial announcement just blows my mind, instead people had to ask and were met with "we'll look into it"

Its this sort of thing that makes me wonder what the hell people are actually doing and thinking at FD.

I can understand technical problems and limitations. I can understand financial constraints and business decisions.

I can't understand not being prepared for this sort of question.

I think they caved under the pressure from the forums and elsewhere about the blackout and told us about the Console cancellation immediately after the decision before they had had time to look into transfers.

The counterpoint is that people have been demanding to know what the console situation is for what, the past 9 months?

There’s already plenty of ‘they made the decision ages ago, they just haven’t told us because of x or y’.

So should they actually have delayed announcing the decision further until there was a clear position on transfers (however long that might take)?

Perhaps they’re working on a cross platform save. This would effectively remove individual transfers and those who want to move platform only need a copy of the game on the new platform. That may require a code rewrite for ps and Xbox which would require a patch that needs to go through Sony and Microsoft for approval. I imagine this would take time to implement. That said, you’d think they could tell the community what they’re thinking and what options they are considering. For now I’m hoping for the best, planning for the worst! o7

Implementing cross-save would not require any changes to the client as any selection of which cmdr to use on your account, the main obstacle if you have pre-existing PC and console cmdrs on the same frontier account, would be much more easily done through the frontier website by logging in to your frontier account there. Implementing a transfer system could be done in a way where you choose to do it via the ingame UI I suppose but it's a LOT more faff to code than a web interface and would require rolling it into a patch for the client to add the new UI elements. Not really something worth bothering with for a game you don't plan to bring anything more than maintenance updates to.

Not one bit surprised. The game shouldn't have even been released on consoles to begin with. You release an update to PC and then have to siphon that to console which takes more time. If you had just left consoles alone and focused strictly on PC the game itself would have probably been more diverse, expansive and fleshed out better. I mean its like what, eight years old and we're now just getting the ability to walk on planet surfaces? No Man's Sky had that feature on release day

ED and NMS are two separate games but both had a bumpy release and were barebone af when released. At least HG has made up for it over the last couple years but Fdev on the otherhand is just a hot mess of broken promises and vague communication and gaslighting with the playerbase

ED was a nice game in those first few hours but after that its just... boring. The same thing over and over. No variety. Kudos to those who have stuck it out though. That takes dedication

I do look forward to this potential transfer. As someone who has played the console version and doesn't have a powerhouse gaming PC yet (its a work in progress) I might be inclined to pick the game up at a later date if transfers are made available

Or maybe the game's just not your thing?
