News Content Recap: Beyond - Chapter Four Livestream - Exploration and the Codex

Yea true, but effectively it's only for the star. Presumably if you went back & then scanned the planets, you'd get the payout for them then....

The honk will give credits for all bodies, but wont reveal them.

I think that's:

The honk will give credits equivalent to the bodies, but won't reveal them.

That's a bit weird though, because if they are simply trying to compensate people who used to Honk and run, do they measure every system's bodies and arrive at a cash price, (that the player hasn't scanned) or just up the price for stars to cover an average old style system honk?

Hi

First of all, let me say that I am, globally, very pleased by what was shown during the live stream, and this is just a beginning for Chapter 4 [cool].

But, I have to point out (as far as I understood) the lack of night vision for SRV is not a great idea [down] ... hint hint ;).

Headlights?

The radar also gives an approximation of terrain - but it would be impressive nonetheless :)

This is going to be so amazing. These exploration and mining changes will keep me coming back again and again and you still have even more to reveal!!

So much more excited for the future of this game! Thank you FDEVs!

Question: I know we can fire probes from within supercruise, but will we be able to fire probes in normal space too? Thanks guys!

Late to the party here. Looks amazing and I can't wait to try it myself! The only problem I could think of : stop adding new UI elements in ALL CAPS. Mixed letters help everyone, particularly VR users.

Why the need for the probes mini-game? Why not simply change the existing Detailed Discovery Scanner so that when you scan a planet, you get all the POI / surface imprints etc. No need for probes, less time wasted for explorers, more time actually interacting with game content. The probes mini game will be fun for the first 10 goes then will become a boring grind, especially for OCD Explorers who will want to map every stellar body they encounter

What I'd like to know is, what happens when you're interdicted while in exploration mode? will the game put you back in flying mode?

I had a similar thought. It was the only negative thing for me. I get why, but still, I'd rather I had to recharge 'em with iron or something.

For me it is the opposite. So happy with this unlimited probes. It is kind of a simulator, but it is a game too. Good to see these time they choose for fun and playing.

No they can't. Supercruise only

The new Discovery Scanner will still be an optional internal module. All that has changed in regard to that is that all previous Discovery Scanners are now a single module: Advanced Discovery Scanner'. Everyone's Discovery Scanner will be replaced with the Advanced Discovery Scanner, so if you're out in the black, you won't need to return home to get a new scanner.

It's not currently planned at this time.

It's not currently planned at this time.

Yep, the new system will make points of interest, such as Voyager 1, much easier.

It will be one single Discovery Scanner now (the Advanced Discovery Scanner). You will need an additional module (the Detailed Surface Scanner) for probing interstellar bodies.

You are throttled to zero when using the FSS, but you are not when using the Detailed Surface Scanner (DSS).

Good idea! We intend to have this shown in the user interface.

Yep, Commanders can still scan bodies using the FSS to gain more information and sellable Exploration Data.

You can zoom in on bodies, even if you've already discovered them.

Nope, Asteroid Clusters will not provide credits for scanning them at this time.

Both the Discovery Scanner and the Detailed Surface Scanner can only be used in Supercruise.

Ever flown for 10-15 minutes in supercruise to reach and scan the planets at a secondary star 420,000+ Ls out? Just to reiterate: it will save a ton of time on scanning all the bodies in a system, even without the extremely distant secondary etc.
stars.

Yes... the current "honk and move on" style of exploration will take a little longer now... but then again, the spectral scale will already give you an overview of the system after honking, even if the map itself isn't populated yet without scanning the individual bodies. You still can honk, check in the spectrum if there is rockies, icies, gasies etc... just not as pre-chewed as it is now.

I'm not too fussed about scanning times and not opposed to the new system I just want something to do after I've scanned i.e. the scanner helps me find interesting things to do and is not simply scanning stuff only as a means to mapping system by system cos that is the really boring side of exploration to me.

The radar gives an approximation of terrain in the ship, too (when you have lowered the landing gear) so having no nightvision mode in the SRV is completely illogical. You don't spend much time in the ship on a planet anyway. The whole point is using the SRV which would benefit from nightvision much more.

That's the point; the new system is all about revealing MORE than what we currently get. Scanning the system ("honk") will reveal anomalies in the new scanning interface. These will be primarily stellar bodies (planets), but also USS's and other items of interest in the system. Then when you scan these anomalies with the new scanner, if it's a planet it'll give you all the details the current DSS does, PLUS it tells you whether there might be anything interesting on that body. For other items we don't know how they'll be displayed yet; that wasn't showcased.

If the scanners revealed something of interest on a planet, you can (but don't have to; this is brand-new gameplay / information) fly up to the planet in question and probe it to fully map it. The probes will then reveal any persistent POIs on the planet which you can then target and land near.

So basically it'll make finding interesting stuff in the system easier (we don't know exactly what this will be, but examples were thrown around such as Generation Ships), as well as finding stuff on planets easier (such as Barnacles or volcanic vents or braintrees).

There are still serious omissions in this planned exploration update in my opinion:

- There's still no proper planetary navigation. We can't search for, pinpoint or bookmark planetary coordinates. The current method (flying around trying to comprehend how the two coordinates change and trying to turn in the proper direction) is ridiculous. There have been no improvements on this whatsoever, even though the community has requested this feature many times.

- There's no night-vision mode in SRV. While it's nice to have it in the ship, most of the planetary exploration takes place in the SRV which would benefit much more from night-vision mode than the mothership. I really don't understand how Frontier can't implement this feature so it could be actually useful. Having it only in the ship is just a gimmick.

- Still no changeable HUD colors. This is, again, a much requested feature by the community. Now not only do we get new HUD/UI elements, codex, but also lighting improvements and graphical tricks. But still no way to change the HUD color. This is a major disappointment.

- Confusing exploration mechanics. The new system may be faster for people who want to scan everything but it's way slower for "honk and jump" players. Simply honking will not reveal anything so it will not give money for the player. Also, just for honking we will have to change into exploration mode which is an extra button press while it was instantaneous before. Also, if a system has been scanned before all the bodies will be already revealed. Which, in itself is a good thing, but again reducing the possible money explorers can earn by honking a system, which will probably be 0 most of the time anyway (since only the main star will be revealed by a honk).

Undisclosed questions:

- What is the keybind for switching to exploration mode on a console controller?
- What happens if the player is interdicted while he's scanning the system? (Explorers will be extremely vulnerable while they are parked in supercruise, tuning their scanner.)
- What if bodies are on the opposite side of the main star (so they are covered by it)? Does the player have to circle around the star to see them? It would take even more time.
- How do the exploration earnings change?

All in all, while the update contains imaginative features I do think it has some missed opportunities and it will basically just complicate things instead of making exploration more worthwhile. The main problem with exploration was never the way it was done, the problem has always been that there was barely anything worth finding out there which seems to remain the same. I don't see real added content. This is my main doubt. It is spectacular but nothing more right now and it will only mean a deeper time sink than before.

- There's still no proper planetary navigation.

While I agree on the lack of planetary bookmarks (cause I want to be able to bookmark canyon racing tracks) and want to see improvements on that part, saying that the planetary navigation is ridiculous is a bit too much I think. I mean, it's a learnable thing and it's very easy once you know how it works. You may not like it, and want an easy way to reach specific coordinates, but really it's not that hard.

- There's no night-vision mode in SRV.

Why ? You have gigantic lights that are way more powerful than they need to be (especially in the anti-fog setting)

- Still no changeable HUD colors.

They said multiple times why it will not happen anytime soon, and why they don't support it. Ranting about it will not make their reasons disappear.

- Confusing exploration mechanics.

Honk & Jump players aren't doing exploration. Also, honking and jumping will still work in Q4 AND give you the basic money, just not reveal anything in the system map.
