News Content Recap: Beyond - Chapter Four Livestream - New Ships

Correct. The only thing that will make an AspX more appealing in terms of range (on average) will be that the Phantom will have more weight due to the higher amount (and larger class) modules it can carry. The emphasis should really be on the "can" though. :)
It’ll be the smallest ship that can sustain itself in space indefinitely. It won’t have a fighter, but it’s still stupidly good :)

Though... it would be even better if limpets became ammo (because it could then also fit the FSD booster)

Not enough PANTHER CLIPPER posts in chat during the stream.

Krait Phantom ? Might be an alternate exploration choice to the AspE, though with the ADS gone, the 7 internals of the AspE are fine. So what to put into the 8th slot ?

Mamba ? Very likely indeed the leaked internal stats, so just one size 5, one size 4 optional, the rest even smaller. Useless, unless you run the shield in the size 4 and the SCB in the size 5.

Boosting on anything higher than 0.5G will cause your engine to overheat very quickly, because vertical thrusters work all the time to compensate.

Problem is the planet was HD 36917 11 A A and the gravity meter in the Mamba quite correctly showed 0.07g ;)

A bug, they'll fix it. I like the Mamba, even if the FdL is more agile as they said. But the Phantom? Hm. Had hoped for more than a Krait Crusader, we'll see.

After seeing the two ships, I would like to know if it is much more expensive to develop a new VRS or maybe Frontier is not interested in generating more content on landing planets.

Huge part of the Mamba is thrusters though.

In a way that makes it even worse. Given that the Mamba was seen topping out at 490m/s. And this is supposed to be a "racing ship"

Also, where the FDL with it lifting body design had very little room for modules outside of the central core. The Mamba looks to have a fairly large amount of room in the hull next to the engines and in those large showy sponsons flanking the ships core. For a ship that is larger than a Python to have fewer internal slots than an Imperial Courier is mind-boggling.

Here's a too scale comparison shot that was posted previously.

Fiddling around in edshipyard showed a boost of 620 with G5 Dirty and combat fit. It also seems to have close to the same shielding as the FDL.

But the MK II already does that, doesn't it?

Depends on what you mean by "does" :)

My fully loaded mission-runner Krait, with weapons, SRV, fighter etc. does 40Ly, which is good for a ship rigged for... just about anything (except PvP). An engineered Phantom should get to about 50, WITHOUT needing to downgrade powerplant or distributor etc.

If I'm not mistaken, on a few occasions it was overheating when the ship had rolled 90 degrees, so was relying on the lateral thrusters. It overheats more in that case, and more again when rolled inverted and kept aloft by the dorsal thrusters.

Messing around with EDshipyard, I was able to get 53.x for the MKII and 59.x for the Phantom without guardian boosters. So like 5.x difference. I use X because I don't remember the decimal value. I heard that the holy grail for fringe explorers is more like 80 so that 5 LY difference doesn't seem worth it.

Hello! Could you please give us a better estimate of jump range? That range is for a grade E FSD and with cargo, could you please give us the unladen FSD range and for an a graded FSD and/or its class/size? I want to know how it stacks up to the krait mkII for exploration :)

a preliminary explorer build that i usually do gives me 70.38

These versions of existing ships is getting OLD for me. 3 Allied ships almost the same, 2 T9 (T10 looks similar!) and now another version of the Krait. OLD OLD OLD! The Mamba looks like a Ship Launched Fighter. Too salty! I don't care. What would have been better IMHO is another EXPLORER Ship or some more SRV's for the boring runs on planet surfaces.

Yeah, looks like beta.coriolis.io also has the new ships. Funny how Frontier had no trouble giving coriolis and edshipyard the numbers but couldn't be bothered to tell us during the live stream.

Looks like the FDL and Mamba have identical core components. That's really nice for FDL drivers wanting to try out the Mamba. As far as the optionals go we have 5-4-3-2-2 for the Mamba vs 5-4-4-2-1 for the FDL. Wow you actually get more room (70 tonnes vs 64 tonnes) in the FDL than in the Mamba a ship that is the size of a python. Man, I really wanted to like the Mamba too. :(

Don't get me started on the Phantom. Usually, when they add a fighter bay to a ship is looses internal capacity. Dropship vs Gunship and Chieftain vs Crusader. So how is it that when Frontier takes away the Fighter bay from the Krait Mk II that it still loses internal capacity. The hull is the basically the same, yet despite taking out all the supporting structures needed to fit a fighter bay and third class 3 mount we loose internal space. And, not a small amount either.

Krait Mk II..... - 6 6 5 5 4 3 3 2 = 228 tonnes cargo
Krait Phantom - 6 5 4 4 3 3 2 2 = 152 tonnes cargo

Right. So all that brings me back to why? For an extra 5 LY jump? Nah.

I did a comparison build between the Krait and the Phantom using my own Armed Escort Explorer as the base. The Phantom gained around 6.5 light years and 40m/s over the my Mark II's build. However despite using the exact same shield generator and boosters that I used on the Mk II, the Phantom's shields were weaker by around 10Mj. This despite the Phantom's lower hull mass (280T vs 320T). Firepower also took a big hit, loosing 12DPS before factoring the loss of the fighter.

The whole point of an armed escort is to be an armed escort. The extra jump range is not nearly enough to justify the loss of offensive and defensive capabilities. 51.5 light years is more than enough for me, especially considering that my 48 light year Fleet support Type-10 explorer can make Beagle Point in 7 days.
