Newcomer / Intro Control setup for newcomers?

Hello all. Just starting out here and I wondered what is a good starting setup for controlling my ship? I don't want to invest a lot of cash to start, so I'm not interested in an extensive HOTAS setup off the bat. I don't want an initial setup that will teach me bad habits that I'll have to overcome if I want to upgrade my setup. By the same token, I don't need the "most efficient" setup since I'm just getting my feet wet.

Given that,

1. Is Mouse+Keyboard viable for a starting control scheme?

2. Would a joystick (something like the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro) be better to start with?

Or does this come down to personal choice?

Thanks!

I'm playing with mouse and keyboard and find it really good.
I do also have a joystick that I sometimes use for combat, if I can be bothered to grab it from the side of the desk.
The good thing about the controls is that you can pretty much set up any combination you want.

For starting with mouse and keyboard I found changing Roll to keys A&D and Yaw to the x axis of the mouse made it much easier to control. This way I feel I have more control over the roll and so can use it quickly to put the axis I want to turn into my vertical and then push up or down on the mouse to turn faster.

glad i'm not the only one to switch the x-axis to yaw..

i configure all my thrust controls to my numberpad and use Q and E to roll...

Mousewise, i use mouse 4 and 5 (side) to change throttle, center button to target, scroll to switch target.

X to make speed 0.

Btw is there a control to re-center the mouse?

There is an option to have the mouse slowly recenter it self, which I found a pain as it mean having to keep scrolling when pitching or yawing.
There is also an option to bind a centre view if you are using mouse look, not sure if that's what you mean.
