Newcomer / Intro Controllers

Hi

If I get myself a nice new joystick, how much of the game will require a mouse or keyboard, just wondering whether to shell out for a decent one... or just a reasonably priced one. Also, are really good speakers needed or does the sound really not warrant that? thanks so much.

Well, if you get a Saitek X52 or similar you could probably do all your flying with it and just use m&k for menus when landed.

Otherwise, if you get a cheap stick you'll need the keyboard a fair bit, or at least I do with my T.16000M.

The sound in game is (in my opinion, which seems to be shared going by other forum posts!) excellent. You don't need fancy speakers for it unless that's your thing but it's not a reason to not buy them if you see what I mean.

If you get a hotas style joystick (Thrustmaster X one is about £40) you may have to use some keys, if you go all out and buy one of the more expensive ones (X52 for example) you should be able to bind everything to buttons.

Another alternative is to use something like voice attack for some of the commands which saves buttons. It's all about personal preference. I use keyboard and mouse but have started using voice attack. When the Oculus Rift consumer version comes out I'll probably go with a hotas given you can't see the keyboard!

I haven't got a users manual, was wondering if you can tell me what is the hotkey to press when, your approaching a docking station and it says, safe disengage ready,im going back and forward like a yoyo so frustrating have a fair idea on what to do next,,very very frustrating, was a master at frontier elite flying craft manually but I knew which buttons were required.sure hope theres a manual in the post for this game, already disabled some features of the mouse, assigned pitch and roll to arrow keys:)could take me awhile to master this game, outta of had an autopilot as standard:)for old newbies:)

For entering and exiting super cruise (within a system) and entering hyperspace (when going to another system) there are three keys to give you options:
They are in the Flight Miscellaneous section of the controls.

Enable Frame Shift Drive - this works contextually, so if you have another system selected it takes you to hyper space, if you are in a system it puts you in or drops you out of super cruise. So effectively this is the only one you need. I'm not sure what the default bound key is so best to check in your options.

However sometimes when you want to go into hyperspace the route is blocked by a planet so you can also bind 'Enable frame shift drive to supercruise' to another key as that will allow you to quickly go into super cruise to move away from the thing blocking you, it also drops you out of super cruise.

The third key is 'Enable frame shift drive to hyperspace' which takes you straight to hyperspace.

Effectively you only need the first option, it was implemented in beta but some people like the 2 key set up so they put that back in as well.

I'd strongly suggest investigating Roccat's Powergrid (is you have an android device to hand).

Once configured to how you like - it's very (very) immersive - at least it is for me.

Well worth the 0 price tag.

it appears i click the jump button again when its, says safe disengage, just had my1st 2 attempts at docking,1st attempt was at a rotating cube, had permission but had no idea were to land,2nd attempt was at another location landed in dock area 1,was only given permission to land in dock zone 2,got done for loitering and shot to pieces, wish was a pointer to tell you were to go:) thanks anyway for steering me towards flight controls.have a feeling might enjoy this game now:)

Nice one. Just downloaded the Android version on my phone and will be testing once I get home from work!

When you get docking permission you should see a timer and landing pad number on your screen above your radar, your landing pad will light up showing your number, land on that one within the time.
