You can still use your standard laser mining ship without removing the refinery. Just turn the refinery off. This way you will not realise that you are missing a refinery next time you want to mine for other stuff. Here is the trick DON’T fit a refinery.

If surface prospecting becomes too much, I’ve a tip for rapid mat. gathering from asteroids.
Delkar A 7 ring 2 (rocky) Res. Site drops Selenium.
Take a manoeuvrable ship with collectors, limpets and the largest prospector possible. The Clipper is perfect allowing for 80 limpets and an A7 Prospector which prompts the largest yields.
Res sites also prompt larger yields. Pristine/Haz Res being the most bountifull.
Here is the trick DON’T fit a refinery. The limpets then focus solely on mats you aren’t full of. The pirates leave you alone because you have nothing in the hold.
Very rare mats also drop surprisingly often.
Each ring type in differing locations drop different ranges and types of mat.
Enjoy and let me know if you have or find any other ring sites for other useful mats, or any comments and improvements.
Strangepork.
According to the Wiki, you're right.I though only the class
makes a difference and not the size.
According to the Wiki, you're right.
Only class matters. Size affects number of active limpets. When laser mining I use a 5A prospector (4 active limpets) for more effective prospecting. The limpet controllers only come in odd sizes (1,3,5,7).As for the prospector controller, you saying A7 is better than say an A4 or A1 at yields? I though only the class
My "Engineering mats" tank are nearly full as I did lots over 2 or 3 years ago.
So here is a question as I haven't gathered stuff recently :
Isn't it more efficient to gather G5 stuff from those crystalline structure things and then trade it for what you want ?
Im certainly doing that now mostly for synthasis my earlier mat collection (Raw) was pre engineering mining and just happened if i remembered to trade up each timeMy "Engineering mats" tank are nearly full as I did lots over 2 or 3 years ago.

I do this exact method as well been tell people how good it is! Thanks for sharing cmdr o7
Just did two trips here the other day!

To underline what others have said:Isn't it more efficient to gather G5 stuff from those crystalline structure things and then trade it for what you want ?
Thanks Pork. I've gotten a lot of mats mining, but never dawned on me to go just for mats. I'll give it a try. lol
As for the prospector controller, you saying A7 is better than say an A4 or A1 at yields? I though only the class
makes a difference and not the size. That would put smaller ships at a big disadvantage.
X.
Link please. Otherwise it is just hearsay. From a dude on r/eliteminers, who seems pretty well informed...

I want a link to a statement supporting what you are claiming. It is a quite standard procedure when you make a claim that goes right against the general consensus on EliteMiners, which is that what matters is prospector class. This is also why the EliteMiners pre-flight checklist tells you to fit an A-rated prospector - not the largest possible A-rated you can fit....if I provide a link, are you then going to ask him where he got the information from, then what, where does that end. If you are interested test it in game.
Now to contrast that, we have you claiming ”you heard from someone”.An A-rated Prospector Controller of any number class (1, 3, 5, 7) has the same increase to fragment yield.

The ”higher” here refers to prospector class, not size.Hey relax man nobody's died, right? Here is one of the sources, rather ambiguous on second reading. A further one mentioned the A7 specifically. It's cool you care so much about accuracy.
" Also keep in mind that the higher the prospector controller you have the higher yields the asteroid will give, it won't however change the quality of the mats but simply spawn more fragments increasing the chance for mats to drop."

Thanks for clearing that up.
