Correct aspect ratio in Cardboard but still warping?

Hi guys,

I've been fighting trying to get ED working right with my cheap and cheerful home VR set up. I've got a Motorola/Lenova G4 mobile phone (screen res: 1920x1080) sitting inside a FiiT VR headmount connected to my PC via USB and Trinus.

I had some problems with just running the game straight through SteamVR, specifically the fact it forces a weird scale/FOV which makes everything feel tiny. So I've come at it from another angle. I'm running the game in non-VR mode but with SBS 3d enabled from the graphics menu. Normally this results in a squashed image because it is trying to draw two 16:9 or whatever images for each eye.

I had a poke around the forums and solved this, and now have the game running at 8:9 960x1080 but the image is still a little distorted. It is most noticeable with something like the milky way in the middle of the screen and then rolling the ship. The galactic streak compresses and stretches with the rolling motion of the ship. I'm assuming this is related to the aspect ratio but I'm having a hard time figuring out a solution. I've tried a square 1:1 image at 1080x1080 and a 4:3 at 1024x768 and no matter what I try the image still seems distorted.

I feel like I'm overlooking something really obvious but after a couple of days of non-stop tinkering with various games and set ups my brain is fried. Any ideas anyone?
