Firstly, just to put the obvious out there, I personally and specifically do not want a mating animation in JWE3, it is not really something I want to see in any given day to be honest. What I’m referring to here is something different: courtship displays, not explicit mating.
With that said, I think having dinosaurs perform courtship displays would be a great fit in JWE3.
It would be really rewarding to see as a new animation in JWE3, from the trailers so far, the social animations look to return for these animals, which I do not mind as they were great in JWE2. So it will be a bit weird to see the animals in JWE3 perform their default social animation before the female lays eggs, as some socials are violent like the triceratops fighting, velociraptors chasing each other, or the concavenator screaming at the other's face.
In planet zoo, the animals would perform a unique animation before the female in the game gets pregnant, and I think this little animation would be so nice to see in JWE3. Male dinosaurs from what I have researched so far, would need to be researched first before incubation, and females would only have a few peaks in their lifetime to produce eggs, so the act of rearing a clutch of natural eggs is already rather rare. Having dinosaurs perform a small courtship display animation before laying eggs would feel like such a nice visual, one that rewards the player by indicating that yes, they have successfully mated dinosaurs in the park and they will soon yield babies!
They could be so much fun too for how rare these animations will be played out. I could imagine that these animations would make the most of the animals features to impress the partner:
• The Male stegosaurus would position itself to show off his plates to the female, and would try to stretch the head and tail out as much as possible to show off his size, where the female would accept his courtship by softy nuzzling his head.
• The Mamenchisaurus would be like giant swans, where they would approach each other, slowly bellowing to each other, before embracing each other by connecting their heads and having their necks form a semi heart shape as swans would do.
• Back in JWE1, the accrocanthosaurus has a cool bellow animation where she would do a heavy below and vibrate her neck, similar to how Crocodiles would do as a form of territorial and mating display. Now that breeding is a part of the game, maybe (if the acrocanthosaurs gets in) that animation would be used in better context, trying to woo the female with an impressive bellow.
• Carnotaurus would have used their horns to fight for dominance, and I could imagine the male would try to woo the female by showing off his horns as well. I could imaging the male would do so by standing as upright as he could. This would look silly for us, but could be the male showing off to the female while consequentially making himself vulnerable to attackto prove his worth. The female might circle and inspect the male, and give off a sense of danger as though she is very likely to attack the male if she is not impressed.
• The Velociraptors could I could imagine invoke a strong female hierarchy where they invoke a dangerous vibe akin to "The big one" from the original JP movie, and the alpha Sorna female from JP III. This is less of a courtship animation where the male tries to woo the female, but the female has selected the male and would bark at the male for him to enforce their positions in the social hierarchy of the pack. It may not be the kindest of the courtship animations, but it would definitely reinforce how dangerous the raptors are in the JP/W universe.
• Gigantoraptor is a fun one and one that a lot of peeps in the community are thinking how the male could courtship the female. Many terrestrial birds would perform fun dances to impress the female and I think it would be fun if this eerily giant feathered fiend would have a complete 180 and would perform a goofy yet charming dance.
I am curious to see if such an animation is planned for the game, I think it would be a nice new animation to observe, a unique one time (family friendly) animation that indicates that there will be new babies in the park soon.
I am also thinking if there will be more to pairing animals in Jurassic World Evolution 3.
In Planet Zoo, animals may be:
Monogamous: forming a lifelong pair bond.
Polygamous: one male, many females.
Polyandrous: one female, many males.
Promiscuous: breeding freely with multiple partners.
I think it would be interesting to see if the dinosaurs in JWE3 would have similar ties, where it would be one challenge to acquire a male of a species, and then another level of management to ensure the habitat has the correct species population to cover their ties.
Dinosaurs like Mamenchisaurus could be Monogamous, where they would only need one mate for the rest of their lives, so players have to be careful how they pair the sauropods, for after establishing a mated pair, no other mamenchisaurus could be swapped for better genes.
Or dinosaurs like Velociraptor could be Polyandry like Hyenas, and whomever is the lead female, she is the who mates with the males. So it is best to make sure that the alpha female of your park is the ones that has the genes you want to pass on to your next generation of raptors.
This is all speculation but I find the process of breeding dinosaurs in the game really interesting. It no longer ends with synthesizing the best genetical engineering could provide, but also seeing if paleo husbandry could be the next step to acquire the best specimens to showcase in your parks.
I hope once more that the courtship display animations could be implemented. From what I have heard from YouTube content creators like Gaming Beaver, the mating process would simply have the female walk to the nest, backup and lay down for a minute to produce the eggs. I think a nice courtship animation before this happens would make observing the egg laying process much more entertaining.
Let me know what you all think—would courtship animations make breeding feel more alive in JWE3?
