CPU Scaling and Oculus 75 fps minimum

Hi folks!

I hear a lot about people with similar set ups to my own experiencing 'no judder' and smooth 75 fps all of the time at high settings (minus AA and motion blur). I still experience quite a bit of 'less than 75 fps' in the cockpits of larger ships, inside stations, and especially at asteroid belts even with significant lowered settings. My rig is as follows:

i7-2600K @ 4.6 Ghz; core parking DISABLED.
2 x MSI GTX-970 in SLI; OC'd to ~ 1475 MHz / 7.8 Ghz. Verified SLI is on and working.
16 GB DDR3-1600. (2x8GB).
Windows 7.
Geforce 350.xx (latest driver).

Most of the comments I see are people using i7-4790K's OC'd, which are probably about 25-30% faster than what I have now. (clock for clock there's about a 20% difference for most functions). Is the CPU holding me back? Does Elite benefit from a 6 core such as a 5820K ($299 at the local Microcenter)?

As I'm writing this I realized I haven't manually assigned cores to Elite Dangerous, i.e. avoid the hyperthreaded .. threads. Does this matter these days?

Thanks all!..

i dont think elite is that dependant on the cpu.

the 2600k is a formidable opponent still. dont sell that short.

id wait until the next gen cpu's come out and the x99s go on sale even further.

with your rig, you should not be having judder.

im on a 5820k with all cores enabled, no parking or anything. @ 4.6ghz and a single 980. no issues here.

something is a miss with you setup.

I run on a 2600k @ 4.4GHz, and a single GTX 970, and get mostly smooth 75 FPS mostly all the time - but for sure stations and RES cause some stress and the FPS will fluctuate some. I suspect this is true no matter what CPU/GPU you have. I do turn off core parking, but I think it doesn't really affect things much. Setting core affinity is an interesting idea, but I suspect it's also not the cause either. I run with hyperthreading enabled, as turning it off also didn't affect things noticeably.

I really think we're simply at the limit of ED's engine with regard to VR. Hopefully they'll do a bit more optimization with the consumer version coming early next year, and hopefully SLI with one GPU per-eye. That'll be the best experience I think.

Agree with rkodey, I have pretty much the same spec as you except a 3770k @ stock & win 8.1 and also run into issues at res sites worse in open play

I heard 1.3 has some performance optimisations, not specifically for VR but any increase is a bonus

Also I wouldn't change anything on your set up until VR sli driver is released, that should hopefully be a great boost once implemented

Oh... good point. I stick to solo play, as open is a juddery mess for me in the rift. Maybe that's why some of us have a great experience and nor so much for others. I find busy systems unplayable in open.

I just got my rift today. On an A10-7850k paired with a 970 I'm able to play the game with no issues. Try dropping some graphics settings and slowly dialing them back up and check the pinned thread for rift optimizations. If my lowely APU can run it, your system should be able to with no issues.

I have the same CPU (i7-2600K) and similar specs (16GB DDR3, Windows 7, core parking disabled). But I have 2x ASUS Strix GTX-980s SLI. I run at 1440p in the rift (using Nvidia custom resolution method) and have graphics at ultra/max but with AA and blur off. I also run some of the settings recommended in the Nvidia sticky post such as SweetFX/ReShade, etc. I get 75 fps all the time (stations, space, belts). I built this machine back in 2012 for Skyrim and so far only updated the video cards from GTX-580s to GTX-980s. In fact, prior to the rift, I ran Elite on my monitor with max graphics on those GTX-580s with no issues.

I don't think Elite is very CPU dependent and in our case (Oculus Rift display) I don't think CPU is the bottleneck. I initially ran with only one GTX-980 and had to lower settings to keep 75fps. Once I added a second GTX-980, it was enough to give me 75fps with max settings. Two Gtx-980s doesn't give double the performance of one card and probably not worth it for most people but it so far allows me to run Elite using the Oculus at max graphics and no judder/lag. That was worth it for me. And if Nvidia ever gets their act together and support VR SLI (two separate outputs per card), it would be even better.

There is quite a big difference if you want to supersample in game versus the Nvidia DSR. The supersample in game is much better but wow really nukes the framerate!

I am running at 5820 i7 with 6 cores unparked and a single 980GTX card and can run without judder on High, with dips in FPS when entering into a system with a lot of real players in it. In solo it's smooth, I think besides the judder ED has when loading NPC and planet data, they are also having problems with their network setup. You should test in Solo mode. I agree with Oculus, Supersampling seems to make the biggest difference, but also effects the framerates the most. I found a good alternative seems to be creating higher DSR resolutions for your Rift and then using them at lower graphics settings leaving the Super sampling at x1.0.
It always surprises me how SLI has been around for many years yet it still has a lot of issues still. I am not sure if they will ever stabilize multi-GPU setups before someone figures out a better way of setting up Graphic cards to run in tandem.

The people who claim they NEVER EVER EVER see judder with ultra settings are either A) lying... or B) are out in space with no other ships in their system. How much judder you have, or don't have, is directly related to BOTH npc and pc traffic. Go out into a distant system with near zero traffic... you will get ultra settings, no problem. Now, go to the starter system, and you will have vomit inducing judder on rock bottom settings, even in super cruise.

I am about to sort out titan x sli in the next few days ( I know madder than bag of ferrets to drop that sort of money on graphics cards) and will see if judder is eliminated. One titan x is pretty damn good and judder is rare but the sliding image is still around at times in RES.

Well, I decided to test the theory about starter systems and judder. My home systems are only about 60LY from the starter systems but not too populated (only 800 ships per 24 hours). So I head to Eravate where I have my old Viper stored. I'm playing open and fly around SC to each main hub (Cleve, Russel and Akerman) and dock, etc. No lag and judder and I see lots of NPC and players around. So I head to the Nav beacon. There are about 4-5 players and same amount of NPCs in average. I jump into a few quick battles. Still no problems. No judder or lag yet. I SC and interdict some wanted NPCs and no problems yet. So I jump to Kremain and head to a RES. As I approach the RES, I finally get judder/lag. Slight judder but not too bad. Once I drop out to the RES, I do experience occasional judder/lag. Not vomit inducing as I can still engage NPCs for bounties. A few players at the RES too. Good activity of NPC and players at the site and I do admit there was the occasional judder but not too bad.

So yes I admit I did experience judder/lag at a RES. It wasn't too bad and certainly not vomit inducing. But yeah, it was not judder free. I bet I will also get judder at a busy CZ or CG site as well. I normally play in less populated systems. Still, it was nice to play around the starter systems again (Eravate had an average of 9000 ships in 24 hours compared to my home of 800 ships per 24 hours).

My PCs specs are pretty good. Optimized and dedicated only for gaming as I have a Mac Pro I use for "work" so my PC gaming machine is dedicated and tuned only for gaming. Love the Oculus and my setup. Just wish the resolution was better but the immersion makes up for it.

I don't think the "blur" setting is motion blur, it is the blurred background seen through semi-transparent HUDs, such as the galaxy map and the in-station menus.

Thanks! This is good to know. I did not know exactly what "blur" meant assuming it was motion blur or some kind of DOF blur.
