Crashes planetside and my position is being reset.

Hey there.

I am out doing a little bit of exobiology, because I have not done it in a while. I am struggling a bit with crashes to desktop today. Weird thing: a) I don't even get the crash reporter showing, and b) my position gets reset pretty drastically - usually to somewhere I have been five or ten minutes before the crash.

I hsve done planetary landings over the last few weeks for war evac, but I have not spent extended periods of time planetside since U13. Today I am on a random planet a few hundred lightyears out of the bubble. I have not had any crashes in a long while before today, but this position resetting seems weird to me.

Any ongoing issues that might just go away, or is there a general problem with planetside gameplay since U14?

Thanks.

Can't provide you with any similar crash-experience in U14, just been busy with the other kind of flowers. The angry kind of flowers.
But position being reset drastically is quite normal (re previous crashes in ED), as it records you positions with two methods;
1. when doing 'session changes'; aka supercruise into orbital & vica versa. Or get in/out of ship or SRV via SRV/Foot.
2. then also with a timer which seems to be somewhat high, so flying around a planet and getting a crash will reset your position to somewhere 20-30 mins ago if I recall correctly.

Also keep in mind crashes where your position is drastically resets are often due to network outages, your player continues in game for a considerable period after the network drops, and usually crashes when you change instances, that is entering or exiting ship or SRV for instance or jumping to SC. So you could be driving, or flying along in the ship, lose connection, continue driving or flying along and then exit the SRV or the ship and the games crashes, you will be reset to the last location before the network disconnects because that's the last location the server has for you.

Note these are different from safety resets. If you crash in space for instance the game will put you in a safe location, maybe you were fuel scooping and the game crashes, it will put you back in the system in a much safer location away from the star.

Have you any tools on your system to monitor network outages on specific ports so you can tell if it's a server disconnect or just a crash?

This happens too me , the devs can't find the cause as yet . My game completely vanishes when i'm flying low , usually over mountains , it goes black for a split second , then i'm looking at my desktop , i just press the ' Play ' button again and it does start me a little ways back from where i was , just like i disconnected there but carried on flying. there is no Crash Report window , no pop ups at all . it just stops. They are looking into this , your not the only one with the problem =-)

Yeah I have had a few of those odd crashes with no error message to send off, but most crashes I have are using the FSS and those normally generate an error dialog I always send off, they're getting rarer these days so I like to think my error logs are helping, but the ones with no error log, not much to do about those!

Thanks for the comments, folks.

Since posting above, I had moved on first to a different planet and then to a different system, and I didn't have any more crashes. From your replies I take it that this position reset seems to be normal. I didn't have many crashes in the past - very few in fact - and could not remember if I was being put back to the extent I was yesterday, but so be it.

For what it is worth, it happened the me also when I was skimming the surface and the reset was not something like in orbit or so, but rather back on the surface, hovering, but a few kilometers back where I was minutes or (tens) before.

The weird thing is that I would expect a server timeout or connection loss to end in a colorful error message, not a complete client crash.

But so be it. I hope things smooth out in the new year. Thanks!

Apologies, but I need * to necro this one.

I have been getting this exact thing a lot today. What is odd is that, in each case, I'm seeking a bio that could possibly be a codex entry for me (according to Elite Observatory).

It reminds me of the same type of crash we had (still having?) when approaching Thargoid ground settlements.

Anyone else notice this lately?

*Edit - well I probably don't need to, but I'll do it anyway :D
