"I urge you to look to the sacred light during these troubled times. You seek answers? Look within… You know this to be true.”
--- TRANSMISSION FROM Commander Xeonyx, 24/01/3302 05:15 Standard Galactic Time ---
Dear Sons of Conn,
I have received the transcript of the High Priest's speech concerning the ancient text recently found in Lugh. I've had plenty of time to read it while I was cruising towards the Eagle Nebula today and ... Well, as you know I'm not exactly a religious person. Not at all. And while I'd do anything to help you and defend Lugh, I've always looked down on your beliefs and ancient religion. But I must say that after reading it only once, I FELT that there was something strange with that poem. I had the impression that my subconscious had understood something that my mind couldn't quite grasp yet.
So I read it, times and times again. To no avail. I gave up, thinking "I must have soaked up a few mS of radiation too much while scooping a star Corona today, that's just a meaningless eons-old poem." Then I resumed scouting the moon I had landed on, searching for some much needed "jumponium". And while I was driving around, I relaxed, thought of Lugh, of what we had accomplished there in the past year, of all the things that happened in the galaxy since I stepped inside my Sidewinder at the very end of 3300.
That's when it struck me. It is just like the High Priest said : The first few paragraphs all seem to talk about events that happened in 3301 ! Over 30 centuries after this text was supposedly written !
In times uncertain upon his lofty throne,
the greatest amongst many shall be struck down.
His children own would his fortune take,
his corpse picked clean before his bones laid rest..
This sound like a old tale from ancient Earth, doesn't it : a king dies unexpectedly and his children fight each other to decide who will inherit his kingdom. Guess what ? A great monarch died in 3301 : not a king, but our beloved Emperor Hengist Duval, brutally and unexpectedly murdered right before his wedding. And what happened after that ? His daughter, Arrissa Lavigny-Duval, and his grand-daughter, Aisling Duval, fought a war of influence to determine who the Senate would nominate as the legitimate heir to the throne of the mighty Empire. But this war had actually began well before Emperor Hengist Duval's death : it started when he first fell in a coma at the beginning of the year. "His corpse picked clean before his bones laid rest". That's also why it is the first paragraph, they're in chronological order.
The spear of light shall pierce the dark,
striking down those weak of heart,
in tumultuous winds and tides unchained
shall be reborn yet forever changed.
This is an obvious reference to the Great War of Lugh. Light and fire are the attributes of the ancient god Lugh, and a lance is his sacred weapon. "The dark" refers to the domination of the Federation over the system, and "those weak of heart" are the mercenaries who fought against the Sons of Conn : they outnumbered the freedom fighter 2:1 but lacked the motivation to actually win the war and lost because of it. Be cause of this, Lugh was set free, "unchained", through a bloody and violent revolution, or "tumultuous winds and tides". "Reborn and forever changed" is a good way to describe the system nowadays.
An astral Queen of a kingdom great,
A shooting star in swift descent.
Broken, twisted, wings clipped, undone,
Lost to fate, her tale unsung.
As we saw before, the words of this text shall not be taken too literally. Their broader meaning must be considered instead. the "Queen" could simply mean "woman who is a major political figure" ... A president for example ...
Remember what happened right after the War of Lugh ? President Hasley, "Queen" of the Federation, a "Kingdom great" (by its size at least ...) fell victim to a spectacular misjump accident. If you remember, her popularity score was spiraling down very fast after the War. Much like a "shooting star in swift descent". And in her final moments, as the misjump occurred, one can imagine that she must have indeed been "broken, twisted [...], undone" and her ship had her FSD destroyed, pr "wings clipped". The accident was unpredictable so President Halsey was arguably "lost to fate" and her tale can only stay "unsung" as there were no wreckage or survivors to tell us what truly happened during the last moments of Spaceflight One.
From the firey flames of war unleashed,
The ancient past and present meet.
Forged in fires by smiths untold,
Fate’s own hand forced by the bold.
This is the one paragraph that I'm not too sure to understand. And my main hypothesis contains classified data, so I'll briefly switch the encryption protocols on, in case someone intercepts this transmission.
[STARTING_DECRYPTION]I think that this is about how a handful of Commanders working for
[DECRYPTION_ERROR] managed to bring their hard-earned spoils of war under the protection of
[DECRYPTION_ERROR] without his agreement, against the will of many and in the face of overwhelming odds.
[END_OF_DECRYPTION]
In a distant land far from heart and home,
Is found a creature of iron and stone,
From the very ground its form takes shape,
Whispering to the darkness to seal our fate.
This one is easy because ... the event it refers to is disturbingly recent : it is about the discovery of Barnacles in the Pleiades Nebula. They look very much like living "creatures", seem to grow "from the very ground", "whisper to the darkness" in a shiver-inducing manner and were very much found "in a distant land".
Into the night his children flee,
A solemn oath, rebirth, destiny.
Tumultuous storm lies in their wake
on a forsaken rock will them their journey take.
I risk to come out as egocentric but ... could this be about me ? Or the Distant Worlds Expedition in general ? We definitely "headed into the night" and our journey shall take us to the "forsaken rock" that is Beagle point if all goes well. As for me, I can see how I could have done this to ... "flee" a "tumultuous storm" that now "lies in my wake", how it was a sort of "rebirth" for me and how I somehow made an "oath" to come back once it will have ended. But maybe I'm just too tired after chasing pieces of rock for so long today.
But what's truly important is that to reach this level of accuracy in the description of all these events, this "ancient text" has either been fabricated to manipulate the people of Lugh or ... the High Priest is right and it is a true prophecy. I don't know which possibility I hate the most honestly. One thing is certain though : someone must discover the truth because I'm 100% sure that the last paragraph isn't about an event of 3301.
From the black comes darkness, blacker than night,
snuffing, drowning the sacred light.
The wheel of time full circle comes,
for the doom of man is now at hand.
Since this isn't about something that has happened in the past year and all the other paragraphs are ordered chronologically, it likely depicts something that is supposed to happen in the future. And it doesn't matter if a prophet from the past has truly written it or not. I mean, even if this text has been fabricated by a shady figure, his author obviously intended to catch our attention by referring to important events from the past year. So the last one, the "prediction" is either a warning or a threat. In any case it is important that we figure out what this means, so we can then try to understand what this person actually wants and we can decide what reaction the Children of Lugh should have.
Hopping that this message reaches you before long, in spite if the ever increasing distance between Lugh and his fleeing child.
Commander Xeonyx, out.
