Cross-play

It seems to me that Sony is the jerk in the room not allowing cross-play for games like Fortnite, Minecraft, and I'm assuming Elite Dangerous. A recent proclamation from Sony's leadership indicates this won't be changing anytime soon. So my question is, why doesn't Frontier consider at least offering cross-play between XBox and PC? I thought I read somewhere Microsoft wants tighter integration between Windows PC and XBox consoles, so this seems a logical step for Frontier to pursue.

I really like my PS4 and its exclusive titles, but Sony's draconian stance on cross-play (especially considering that they already have those exclusive titles) sure does tempt me to defect over to the "other side". However, there wouldn't be much point if you folks can't even cross-play with PCs. Is there any chance of this coming to Elite Dangerous in the near future?

I'm just curious, and a bit agitated by today's tech headlines..

Because that was never the plan and it wouldn’t make sense as there are features and accessories PC has that console doesn’t.

Its not looking promising mate, wish it would happen myself as would open new avenues for us Xbox one players

It's not gonna' happen.

Don't know why people wish it would.

I've read the forums of cross-play titles, hell, played a few from a console, and all you get is console players complaining about PC players using a mouse.

Trust me, it's better to not happen.

But in this case we talk about Elite, and the Xbox (PS4) controller is the next best thing after a hotas..

The only thing we missing are visual enhancements and speech control. They are very nice for immersion, but doesn't give advantages in battle.

I'd like Crossplay for Elite, and i wonder why this isn't a thing already now we have a HOTAS as well.

Because, as I've said before, cross-play doesn't only concern combat. If we're 20,000LY from home racing SRVs, who cares who's using a mouse?

No, believe me, mouse is objectively superior to anything. Including HOTAS. There is a reason why 90% of PC PvP pilots use a mouse and keyboard.

HOTAS is more immersive, absolutely.

But competitively a mouse is the best choice, as it more accurate by practically a factor of ∞.

Believe me, cross-play would destroy the Xbox/PS4 PvP community.

There is a reason why War Thunder on Xbox sucks.

I don't see why it would, it would be hardly any different to what it is now, but, as we know this is probably never going to happen because Sony have made it pretty clear. (at least when it comes to Xbox and PS4 crossplay, there already are exceptions on the PS4 to PC)

And for the people like me who don't fly those distances?

Despite what this forum would have you believe, there are a lot of people who detest exploration.

It is those people I am concerned about, not explorers.

With respect, most explorers are proud of the fact that they never see another player.

I would be quite logical then, to think of the combat/trading community first, as they are massively more likely to encounter another player.

I love Warthunder....

Doesn't change the fact that Xbox players are at a massive disadvantage. We can't even use the HOTAS.

Officially the game isn't even released yet.. but this is Off topic.

We have a Warthunder thread in the offtopic section if we want to continue this discussion.

This list is quite interesting:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_that_support_cross-platform_play

The quite obvious trend is nothing across the PS4 <> Xbox divide, it seems Sony is open to cross play as long as its not with its closest competitor. Maybe when the new Xbox outsells the PS5 the shoe will be back on the other foot (as it was in PS3 / 360 days when Sony were very open to cross-play but MS understandably were not). Its all about cash nothing more, nothing less. :)

But, Dusty is right, we have gone way off topic. This is might be why it could be difficult for Frontier with Elite, as theoretically we could have PS4 and PC cross play or Xbox and PC cross play but not three way. What a mess. Imagine instancing there! :) :) :)

Hey I'm triple Elite, I'm not just an explorer :p
I wasn't really talking about myself or my own playstyle. The best times in Elite Dangerous have been overwhelmingly collaborative. The Enigma Expedition, Distant Worlds, Canonn, The Fuel Rats, Chiggy's rescue, the Hutton Truckers, etc.
When someone mentions cross-play I immediately think of these, and then someone pops up "But PC players can use voice attack!" and I just sit there thinking what has that got to do with anything?

I understand. But you have to also appreciate the ramifications cross-play would have for console PvP players.

Now if there were a toggle... Yes/No to CP on this account... It would be fair. But then you have to ask would CP even be worth it, if a large number of players turn it off?

Not to mention that it would effectively add even more modes, causing more work for the servers.

I just don't see any benefit, or at least, the cons would outweigh the pros.

Console has its share of PvP players as well as PC. Conceivably, this might be the only area where there could be advantages to PC over console. It’s easy for me to say “I don’t go for PvP so it’s ok for me”.

Indeed. We have to think of all players. In my opinion, status quo is the wisest move. That is to say, no move at all.

Let's be real.

There's no reason to NOT do it at this point other than FD has shown us that they can't produce content fast enough as is.

Putting someone on the cross play feature means delaying another feature entirely right now.

If FD told you today "Alright, we're doing Cross Play" you would be lucky to see the feature in the next 12 months. More likely that 8 months into your wait they would say "ooops, sorry all.. you're going to have to wait another 8 months for it and then we might have to charge you for it"

It's a Tuesday but feels like a Monday and YES, that makes me a bit more Salty.

Playstation gamers can say goodbye to many future Bethesda titles if Sony continue with their current obstinancy. Bethesda are pushing buttons now and have stated quite clearly that unless Sony change their tack on crossplay, future support for the console will be limited at best... [yesnod]

Sony has already irritated Bethesda by refusing to allow the creator studio for Fallout 4 even after Microsoft caved in and accepted the availability and use of Mods on the Xbox for the same title after Bethesda used a similar threat.
