Interesting spot that.

Removing the 2nd column in its entirety would then complete the pattern of the 4s across the whole grid.

Could just be a coincidence, but it’s a striking one.

Edit - and I’d already been thinking that if there was more to the message, then removing the known part may well be the next step. (... Which of course also means I may have a bit of confirmation bias going on! 😉 )

Great find indeed. And if we assume that there is no space character at the end of the 1st line of LP message, and then we take every 8th character after the initial ‘8’ (which might be the key), we get:

LONG:-38.0 615 LYBODY 3

No-one had been assuming there was a space at the end of the first line. There's a typo. Pretty disppointing tbh

Somebody mentioned earlier that the `+WEST was in relation to the longitude.
There is also RTH below WEST which might be related to NORTH in relation to the LAT of 11.86...for those looking at number substitution...but i couldn't make much sense of it. Maybe someone else can?

I had a similar matrix, 8 letters wide (using the first number in the code as the clue) and, of course, LONG and WEST are very conspicuous. But I had excluded the spaces, so LYBODY did not show up !

There may be a clue to solving this code offered by 32 34 at the end, but I'm sure greater minds than mine have considered this

the SRV not working at first. the LP not working at first and typos in the encrypted code once it was working. a lot of mistakes that could have been avoided. i'm still unable to get the original message from the SRV.

I'm not going to spend more time on this, but here's an odd thing I noticed:

If I used the "number plate" substitution of numbers for letters, using 1= the letter I, 4 = A, 5 = S, I picked up something that looked like RUINS down the left hand side, except of course it was RUIAS !

If N was substituted for the 4 instead, then it would be RUINS, and NEST also appears in the vertical. But it doesn't seem to lead anywhere productive and life has to move on 🤷‍♂️

Last column starting with P - if you look down that column... go to the second G that you come across - from that G - can GUARDIAN or GUARDIANS be decoded at all?

EDIT: To make it easier to see - the 4 underneath the G could be the letter N? if that makes sense

On the other thread Long (is it Lat or Long I always get confused?) would be + for East and - for West from 0 degrees and the base is at - so could just be that.]';

The extra spaces - Grammar wise theres nothing wrong with it, a space at the end of a line would start a new line for the new word, our mistake was assuming a 'Return' and a new sentence. If we read it as one sentence with a space at the end of the last word on each line how does that alter it? Ive gone number blind on Excel and cant even get the results counting every 8th character I get LONG: -RR or it goes junky after the -, if I adjust for the 3 it goes wonky after the 8 and I dont get BODY so Im doing something wrong maths wise so thought Id try English Grammar instead and see if that 'fixes' the puzzle, one sentence, space at the end of last word?

If we rotate lines 2-7 to the right then "LONG:-" is in the right place, the longitude of 23B. I don't know all LPs but most of them start with "LISTENING POST SIGNAL DATA". Maybe we can find this pattern somewhere. Between LY and BODY a space is missing can I buy this from FD with ARX ?

Encrypting
Suppose the rod allows one to write four letters around in a circle and five letters down the side of it. The plaintext could be: "I am hurt very badly help".

Decrypting
To decrypt, all one must do is wrap the leather strip around the rod and read across. The ciphertext is: "Iryyatbhmvaehedlurlp" Every fifth letter will appear on the same line, so the plaintext (after re-insertion of spaces) becomes: "I am hurt very badly help".

Now, if I was hurt very badly would I really want to make the emergency something complicated or would I want it in plain text?
