There should definitely be a hard mode start. When I get my friends into this game, with the proper guidance they are skipping all the small ships too quick.
It would be nice if you could choose a hard start mode, where you get a g malfunctioning rust bucket in the middle of nowhere so you cant even warp out until you scrounge up some cash to get a slightly less awful ship. When you make your first jumps into the meat of the bubble and see big stations and stuff, it will feel like a real accomplishment.
