Dark side of planets still not dark

We have that. It's called headlights.
Headlights suck as a starship navigational aid. They have a range of a couple hundred meters, which is fine if you're landed and lighting up an area, but insufficient if maneuvering through a canyon or trying to land on a high-G world.

Which is why all but the COORDs on the HUD are useless, because under no circumstances do we need to know our altitude or speed as we can see the ground. At least if it was pitch black sometimes we would actually need to use the instruments.

I was doing a passenger mission once and had to go down a ridiculously deep cavern to scan a beacon, and that silly lighting bug didn't occur. IT WAS GREAT! I was being careful, watching my altitude checking the G the whole time i was like....Can i even fit down here i cant see a thing! It was the only time i looked at Elite while doing a mission rather than Netflix.

Now that's what I call fun!!

I accept they should introduce some sort of radar/thermal imaging system module to aid the such navigation. Magic lights shining out the arses of singing fairies is not the answer.

Edit - Headlights work great on my car. Maybe adding more lights or giving us directional control of them would help.

Known SLI bug, mine currently doesn't(I too have SLI) and I don't know why.

I hope the QOL update sees to this Dark Side nonsense, and Beige problem, and many SRV QOL bugs(hitting a small stone can stop you dead in your tracks, scanner volume, Turret view useless until we get scanner enabled in it etc.)
what GPUs do you got and what drivers?

with my previous GPUs i didnt have issues depending on the driver, those were Titan X maxwells.
now ive got 2 1080ti's.. and cant really roll back to a driver without this issue.

Clearly we have very different definitions of the word 'fun'.

The starlight thing is a stop-gap solution based on the skybox, IIRC; If facing the galactic core, and not occluded, there will be quite an amount of diffuse light.

Hopefully they get around to replacing it with the intended system sooner, rather than later.
I find myself wondering whether the bug that causes isolated patches of ground to be rendered much darker than its neighbours, is a side effect of the HDR system.
It really looks silly, how the lighting of a body changes completely, because you, not it, move between lights and shadows.

I also wonder how they will handle the HDR-to-SDR grading thing, if they ever make the game *output* HDR, to displays that can show it -- ideally, one might think, there shouldn't be any artificial exposure changes -- then again; In that case, coming out of hyperspace would become something of an ordeal. :p

780Ti X 2 , 382.33 from MAY 2017(and I will not update these unless other parts of my game suffer)

Curious.

Because back when the Horizons beta came out, the dark side of planets were actually *dark*. They intentionally did something to change it...and now they need resources that they can't currently dedicate to reverting those changes.

It's a shame too, because back then, the dark side of planets actually meant you needed to use your headlights. And I tell you it was awesome.

That basically sums up every FD announcement regarding changes to stuff that was fine before.
  • They are aware of it
  • They are working on it/don't have the resources
  • No timeframe yet
  • Low priority

Headlights are another story and have been discussed in the suggestion forum ad nauseam.
Having headlights that illuminate barely up to 100m in the anaconda, which is capable of going beyond 300m/s is just ludicrous.
Headlights in ED should illuminate at the very least 2x the stopping distance at maximum speed.

thanks for the info, i think ill make another bug report this afternoon.

Agreed, but pls stronger headlights, not these 'candles' we have nowadays. It's a mess [mad]

yeah i dont run geforce exp, think its a horrible program.
all my settings are maxxed out exept for SS. and run a res of 7680x1440.

but i dont think its a setting thing, it has to do with drivers.
i also read somewhere that it could be related to shadowplay..

How much light does the milky way generate?

If the dark side of the planet was also facing away from the milky way then you'd expect it to be pretty dark. Facing it, perhaps not so much.

I don't either, just used it to tell you what my settings are. Worth a try for you?

I think I have just clicked as to why on some SLI PCs we get the light flicker on the dark side. It must be with the code they put in to lighten up the dark side. In certain SLI setups it can't make its mind up. TBH the last official response from FD(can't quote) blamed it on my drivers changing. Well you see , if they REMOVE this artificial horrible lighting on dark sides,it might also fix our SLI flickering problem too.

Not enough to make anything visible. Even in big cities on Earth you can't see anything in your backyard that isn't white during night time, the ground is pitch black.

Thats true actually...twilight can provide very lower light levels that elevate it above pitch black certainly, but nowhere near enough to make night time into daytime. Even out in the countryside miles from any major city and town, starlight alone on a clear night with no clouds and no moon...yer not gonna see a damned thing fer at least 20 minutes till yer eyes adjust, and even then, it would be dark, vague shapes and guesswork at best. Nothing is truly invisible or pitch black because of it, but turn night time into daytime really is stretching the excuse into absurdity. Thats why I just plain ignore that argument...it simply isnt enough to explain it ^

That's your eyes not tuning in due to other light sources. When you're out at sea, and in a desert I imagine, far from land on a moonless cloudless night. You can see the milky way in all its awsome (and i use the word accurately) glory. The starlight is enough to illuminate the deck very subtly once your eyes have adjusted.
