The starlight thing is a stop-gap solution based on the skybox, IIRC; If facing the galactic core, and not occluded, there will be quite an amount of diffuse light.
Hopefully they get around to replacing it with the intended system sooner, rather than later.
I find myself wondering whether the bug that causes isolated patches of ground to be rendered much darker than its neighbours, is a side effect of the HDR system.
It really looks silly, how the lighting of a body changes completely, because
you, not it, move between lights and shadows.
I also wonder how they will handle the HDR-to-SDR grading thing, if they ever make the game *output* HDR, to displays that can show it -- ideally, one might think, there shouldn't be any artificial exposure changes -- then again; In that case, coming out of hyperspace would become something of an ordeal.
