David Braben interview on Edge - hints at PS4 release

Handicapped to make it roughly equal...

Certainly in traditional FPS games, it's not sustainable to have some playing with gamepads, and some with mouse and keyboard. It's been tried and doesn't work. A while back I had been playing Crysis 2 with a gamepad, thoughtlessly went into multiplayer with it, and died over and over again without a single kill. When I twigged, I switched to mouse and keyboard, still died a lot, but got several kills to my name and actually felt like I could vaguely compete.

Unless the two control systems are roughly balanced, there'll more than likely be one dominant control system in the 'all' group. Given how many people are excited about playing this game with a stick, it would be sad if they went online, got sniped by a precision mouser from 2km, and had to put their X52 pro in the cupboard to collect dust, while we all point-and-click from a distance.

Heh. My brother became a console gamer and swore blind that controller was better than keyboard and mouse for FPS. That all changed the day we played COD2 on the PC, he on his XBOX controller and all other players using K/M.

And if that works, would not PvP balance follow up to the point developers have control?

PvP balance should be based upon ship design and weaponry / components not input methods.

Whilst playing BF3 and flying helicopters I used mouse / KB for control and not a stick - I was at a disadvantage as it was hard to pull off some of the moves others could (I couldn't rotate about the Z axis - had to pitch and roll to do do the same) Still had fun whilst playing - didn't die that often (if you discount pilot errors :D) Certainly didn't expect any changes due to my choice of controller.

The wife plays Monster Hunter on the WiiU and for that I purchased a KB as well .. made communicating with other players much easier as you could just type instead of picking each letter with the controller. The game didn't artificially slow down text input just because the majority used a controller! The fastest input method was done by using VoIP hardware - they didn't slow the speech down to match.

Same for if there's a PS4 version ...

Well, if last "meet the team" interview with Mike is indicator, they are trying to making dogfights less dependent on controls and "twitch" factor, and more to strategy - like using shields and rockets properly, etc.

The one thing that concerns me at the moment is that FD may be designing the user interface with consoles in mind. I feel that this would be a huge mistake as many of use here like to hit certain keys on the keyboard to control different functions.

Off topic I know, but I can't hold it back any longer.... I really don't like the cockpit design with all those holograms all over the place. What was wrong with the frontier style cockpit where you could cycle through icons? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

using keyboard control on a console

Why couldn't a console gamer just buy any USB keyboard. They can be picked up for about £7.

In addition, FD could license a manufacturer to make and sell a quality Elite:Dangerous(TM) USB keyboard (for PC/Mac/Console). Something like this:

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=330-6214

but with the Elite controls also back-lit . Things like 'Hyperspace', 'Target Missile', 'Escape Capsule'. It would be perfect for playing in a darkened room and the fanboys would go mad for it.

A sturdy physical switch to turn the back-light off when you're not playing would be good also.

The average Joe User who buys a console only expects the extra peripheral they will need is the large flat screen TV to plug it into. Gamers that buy things like keyboards and headsets are in the minority.

To be fair, if you look at the galaxy map, it's got a 'Search' box. You know, for typing into... With a keyboard... Also, the text is quite a bit smaller than I'd expect for a console game, so I'm not convinced the UI is being designed with consoles at the front of the devs' minds. I made worried comments about that myself back in the day, but I'm quite pleased with what's been presented so far.

Can Frontier make E.D as popular as the WOW franchise or Diablo genre?

We all certainly hope so... but dont forget Wow was only on PC. Therefore not a good example to aim for.

If Frontier want to choose a gaming Franchise to strive for then the Elder Scrolls is the pinnacle... massive on both consoles and PC. The PC community for their games (Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind) all have massive modding communities. And more importantly Skyrim just won the Best Game Ever award in PC GAMER last week ;)

If Fronttier can generate anything close to the fanbase that Elder Scrolls has acheived across multi platforms then theyve won!

The average user can just use the pad. If the user then loves the game and wants to play it more then they can plug in their PC keyboard or purchase one.
That is how I became a serious sim racer, first on pad then from late PS2 onwards purchased and enjoyed a full steering wheel and pedals with seat and attachment frames etc.
All PS4 come with headsets supplied with the console btw.
