Day 64 of a broken background sim

I'll say it: maintenance mode. Certain folks don't want to hear it as it's like the devil talking to them. But there's only one answer why there's little attention given to this game by the dev's. And it's not that they are "busy working on new, great, exciting, fantastic Elite game stuff" that they don't bother replying to the forums. They've pulled all their talented (?) folks away already, and the silence has become pretty normal here same as other titles that have peaked and gone into... maintenance mode.

Now, for those cowboys/gals that are quick on the draw here and want to defend this silent behavior, please answer this: is this what you expect from a company that's trying to get your business? Silence? Really?

I can almost see where this post is coming from, but if they have moved all the good devs on, then where did they move them to? Read the Jurassic Mess forums... They seem to be having all the same issues as us with a fundamentally half finished game, full of issues not being addressed whilst constantly being bombarded by "new dinosaur colours" or other shop content that serves no purpose other than to distract from the issues at hand, like jingling keys for a toddler.

I mean, come on people, we've got paint jobs coming out of our backsides, coloured engines, coloured lasers, new bobbleheads, new cockpit voices, more spacesuits, accessories and tattoos than you can shake a stick at. Why are you not happy? BGS is borked? But look, here's a NEW ship that's identical to another ship with some slight differences in internal layout... Not happy that bugs have been here for 2 years now? But look, here's a ship kit, you can put hard looking spikes on your Sidewinder...

Sooner or later FDev, people stop looking at the jingling keys and start to take a long, hard look at what's underneath.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to poke my head in and say that we do recognise that the BGS has a number of issues that we are looking to address. We’re currently in the process of investigating fixes for some of these issues and work is ongoing to return to a state of stability.

More specifically, we are currently looking into:

  • The balance between the different activities, for example, how much Influence trade activities provide compared to that of missions.
  • Ways we can decrease the number of active conflicts (Wars, Civil Wars, Elections) and the impact conflicts have on the BGS.
  • How the BGS trends away from factions being stuck in Civil Liberty and Investment states.
  • Finally, we are also investigating player reports that their actions are not resulting in the results they are expecting during a conflict. We’d like to thank you for providing numerous reports on this and any additional examples that you have encountered will provide us more data for our ongoing investigations. Please report them with the following details:
    • The system
    • The factions involved
    • The dates of the conflict
    • The actions performed including the name of Commanders performing them
    • The expected results
    • The actual results

We understand that ongoing issues with the BGS are not ideal, and the impact these issues have on Commanders and factions, and would like also thank you for your patience as we investigate these issues.

We currently do not have an ETA on when these issues will be fixed, but will try to keep you updated on the progress.

Thanks,
Adam

And in the meantime, look at this shiny new Pulsar paint job you can get for a ship you haven't owned in 2 years because no-one needs to spend more than half an hour in a starter ship these days...

The problem they are having is they ask us for specific information whilst trying to fix issues and the reply they get is :

"I'm not submitting detailed bug reports helpfully telling you what the problem actually is, I'd rather do toxic ranting instead whilst complaining its not been fixed now if not sooner. Why don't FDEV talk to us, it is a mystery and all their fault"

Rant on commander :S[up].

You know that you are not helping for the game success, don’t you? You are sitting in the forum which is dead space because of people like you. Any attempt to draw the FD’s attention to issues pushing a lot of players out of the game is buried with countless post of people blindly defending what? People like you and more important FD themselves don’t know what happens behind the curtain of the forum. There are discords with thousands of players, Inara squadrons with hundreds members and if you can look in them you will see disappointment and frustration. BGS condition is ridiculous; mission system is unbalanced for years and the only way to have the FD’s attention is advertising an exploit.

Cosmetic stuff in the store was always the plan. Its OK for game development companies to make money, its sort of the point.

By liking the game I've obviously doomed it.

Luckily I've balanced that by being one of the only ones to have submitted a bug report with the info they've asked us for.

Broken record. Still, if you keep saying it you'll be right. One day. Then you can bask in your glory. Until then. Meh.

Adam take a look at Ross 780 my home system is broken. Ross 780 inc have been stuck in Civil Liberty and Investment for over 6 weeks now. Literally tried working for all over factions. Even went full illegal murder pirate broke my rep it made no difference lol.

Luckily I've balanced that by being one of the only ones to have submitted a bug report with the info they've asked us for.

To submit a bug report about what exactly? It was obvious that introducing the mining as most profitable activity will draw the BGS in permanent investment state across the board. It was obvious that ridiculous rewards for illegal missions will cancel any negative state, long range smuggling missions have disappeared years ago, but these missions were boiling the BGS, and all this as a whole will put the controlling faction of the system in investment, and since nobody is doing missions for the rest of the factions, they will return in their initial value of influence which will cause countless wars. Now they are investigating how to adjust the numbers to compensate something which reason is so obvious – the players are following most easy and profitable activities.

That's just it isn't it. You say its all broken then just moan that other people are having fun playing the video game.

People who are mining aren't necessarily heavy BGS players. Simple reason is that is not an efficient BGS activities.

I do think it is good they have communicated but the no ETA inside it makes me think they have absolutely no clue how and if they will fix it. PP / MC jurisprudence.

They need the info they've asked for first, wanting an ETA before that's been done is putting the cart before the horse.

They had already multiple reports, during beta, just after go live, and even after.
The main issue, in my opinion, is that people who were reporting got sick of FD stance - not communicating, not acknowledging the problem, not saying the inputs versus expected outcome, and so on.. The black box strategy has come back to hurt themselves.
Secondly, the fact that no testing has been done during the beta - as usually - has not deserved them well.

And finally, I do believe they aren't the ones who have made BGS design - like outsourced - or people who have done it are gone. And they just don't have a clue how the deep BGS mechanisms are working. Again, my opinion.

They won't (can't maybe) fix a problem people refuse to report.

Its impossible to know how to report something if you don't know the underlying rules- all we have is that 3.3 BGS is slightly similar to the <3.3 BGS, plus a rough outline as to what does what. The BGS is built on interlocking layers that interact in odd ways, and in a live environment impossible to predict. Without knowing base factors such as action values we can't tell if effort = outcome. It really is us and FD playing guess the number, except we are never told what the number is so we can't ever know if we are right or not.

The other issue is why should we have to test in a live environment anyway? Its had a beta period which was supposed to be for this sort of thing that was not acted on. I tested Powerplay during beta and found (plus reported) issues that were not fixed at all in the live build. People have reported loads of issues, but you can only do so much before you ask if you are playing a game or being an unpaid tester. Its heartbreaking losing hours or even days of dedicated effort to a possible bug.

Then add anything else they ask you for.

If you don't like fixes on the fly buy games that have been out and not updated for a few years. bear in mind that it wasn't better in the old days, things just used to stay bugged permanently.

To be fair, there was a time, not that long ago, that we knew how it worked and it worked consistently. When games were released once, they weren't messed with after the fact either.

What's more, a lot of the 'changes' were not asked for, or discussed with us...

I know you're going to say that FD has no obligation to discuss the direction of their game with us, but this is a special case, since they don't play it themselves, and we have years of experience on the subject. It would have been wise to at least discuss it...

Why should someone spend ten hours trying to play when they should just be able to play and expect some sort of consistent result? What are betas actually for then? Its as if FD never learnt from their mishandling of Powerplay and complex systems. Beta is for obvious bugs, live is for ongoing balancing. By now we should be beyond big issues, as each day for some it gets worse and worse.

Its a doubly inefficient way to fix problems if you don't know where to start as well. I wonder how many bug reports were false alarms, and how many actually were genuine? Thats a lot of wasted time that could be spent elsewhere.

I get FD are going the MVP route, but with something as complex as the BGS people had hoped it would be delivered in a better state.

yup, its knackered alright. One of the last bastions of the long term CMDR was playing with the BGS. Now thats broken, there's not a lot to come back for. Who wants my stuffz?
