Guide / Tutorial DCello's Science Guide to the Galaxy

For supercruise - a better analogy than a penguin on ice is a person (or penguin ?) walking on a travelator in an airport. You may be moving across the floor at walking pace, but your 'bubble' of space is being compressed at one end and stretched at the other, making your speed relative to the airport much faster..

In rotating space stations I am a little disappointed that the coriolis effects are not modelled. If the outside of the station is rotating at (say) 100 m/s then half-way between the axis and the rim is rotating at 50 m/s. This means that a falling object which does not accelerate sideways would appear to follow a curved path. There seems to be a very slight drift to the left as you descend to dock, but it should be much stronger?

In addition, if you don't give a lot of lift, whilst travelling sideways you should fly straight into the outside of the station. Maybe onboard computers correct for this?

It in fact does. It's the "Rotational Correction" you can disable on the right-hand panel.

This is awesome and cannot believe i havent found this before. The lore is broken up into so many different forms of media. Its nice to have it all in one place. Thank you so much for the time you spent on this. O7 CMDR

Excellent read - really helps build the game world and make it a highly believable form of escapism for me. Thanks for the work.

It's unfortunate that OP has yet to grace us with further SCIENCE! after recent updates in Elite: Dangerous. Here's hoping they'll post an update or something, because I do really need more lore to even make sense on some things in E: D.

It is ten years since the original post and no posts by the OP since that year.

It is five years since the last response to the thread.
