IRC. the F-14 was shown before in The Final Countdown, if anybody remembers that movie.Random musing time, something I've been wondering a few times: is the F-14 objectively gorgeous, or is it a Top Gun generation thing that younger generations will just dismiss in favour of the (utterly boring) F/A 18? It really feels unique and beautiful in a kinda unique way just like the curves of the Flanker, but maybe that's just movie nostalgia talking.
Top Gun might have been a thing in the US but for me it was just another summer blockbuster.
What makes the F-14 remarkably, at least IMHO, is that she was a beautiful design and also a quantum leap compared in technology to the planes she replaced like the F-4 Phantom and the F-8 Crusader. I never was a fan of the F-4 aka "air defense diesel" (Luftverteidigungsdiesel, that's what the Luftwaffe called the F-4) given the smoke trail she pushed out at her southern end, but the F-8 Crusader, IMHO, was a beauty too.
But otoh, I always liked the P-47 and the F4U Corsair over the P-51, BF 109 and Spitfire. I know, I'm a weird German.
