Designing the Therizinosaurus, Gigantoraptor, and Deinocheirus requires a great deal of creative liberty.

For this discussion, I first wish to show to you all this video on modern dinosaur artwork, it is about 10 minutes but it should give you all an idea on where I am going with this thread.


When it comes to jurassic world evolution. I genuinely love the design of these dinosaurs. They are scientifically flawed for sure but I enjoy some of the dinosaurs presented that showcased a sense of creative liberty from the art team in Frontier. To give context, I love the deinonychus' comb on head and tail, the ouranosaurus' bill, and the dreadnoughtus' odd nose. There is very little evidence that prove these dinosaurs had such features, but they do help define these creatures from other dinosaurs of similar niche.

Now I bring up these three dinosaurs, the therizinosaurus, gigantoraptor, and deinocheirus, as they could be seen as some of the oddest and most difficult dinosaurs to implement into the game. The three of them are large bipedal dinosaurs, each with a distinctive look such as the large claws for the therizinosaurus, the hump for the deinocheirus, and the large bird like features of the gigantoraptor. I think having these 3 could be awesome in the game as it brings some star oddities to the overall roster.

These 3 dinosaurs are some of the best choices for the roster as they are all large species, are possible combatants, and bring in unique niches that the game needs more of, a specialists niche.

So far, the pachycephalosauridae and spinosauridae are the two most unique families in the game. The pachycephalosauridae are bipedal herbivores that are able to combat small carnivores with their thick skulls, and the only small herbivores with an alpha mechanic. The spinosauridae are also unique due to their wetland and piscivorous diet. Both of these families became unique in the 1.8 update and is what I love in a roster: defining characteristics.

I do hope we could see these 3 be includes as they could be to a jurassic world park to what sloths, pandas, and kiwis are to zoos: Creatures that are so specialized that it is rare to find another species that fill out the same roles in nature.

This does lead to a creative issue, to which would lead to some divided and conflicting ideas, all based on this rule frontier has used to respect the jurassic park franchise:

This is a major rule that has made people think of how these designs would look like. These three, especially the Therizinosaurus, are accepted to be full of feathers. Feathers which are hard to apply in a game where they are absent. But I do think they could still pull them off. These dinosaurs do not need to have feathers to be bird like, as they could have their other traits be well featured and highlighted to define them even more.

I will be giving off some Ideas for these creatures in terms of looks and behavior, but I would love to get your feedback for this direction.

1) The Deinocheirus

The deinocheirus is an interesting dinosaur. The overall look of this dinosaur is bizarre, it is basically a giant spoonbill that wanted to be more like a camel in appearance. This dinosaur would be unique to have in the game as it brings a possible unique niche, a docile piscivore. Currently, the piscivores in the game are exclusively part of the spinosauridae. If the Deinocheirus gets into the game then she would be the first piscivore with a herbivorous diet as well. This will allow for cool wetland ecosystems that do not only consist of small carnivores and sauropods as possible companions to the wetland creature. So mechanically, I could see her like the triceratops in terms of population and social, it could handle a notable population and could be alone and in small groups.

In terms of behavior, I believe the Deinocheirus would only be a threat to the large carnivores. Initially, I thought she could be like the iguanodon where she could fight small carnivores, but the size of the Deinocheirus is massive! So it only makes sense for her to be able to only fight the large carnivores. She has those long reaching claws so it should be plausible to see her slash the carnivores as a defensive manner.

Her look will be interesting. I could imagine her not having feathers at all. But I think it will be interesting if she has a similar throat sack to the Marabou Stork.

Birds like this stork and the pelican have an interesting throat sack for fish consumptions, and I think would work well to have a similar trait to the Deinocheirus. If the spinosaurids would have traits of crocodiles, then the Deinocheirus should feel like a large piscivorous bird. It will be cool to see her benefit from paleobotany from one feeder, and see her swallow a fish whole from the feeder.

Likewise, she could have a unique grazing animation. Where instead of seeing her graze on grass, she will graze in bodies of water. That way it imitates a sense of eating water plant matter.

And as for the skin, I would like to have something similar to the edmontosaurus. Having her head or at least the bill be of a vibrant color compared to the rest of her body would help. And small bumps on her skin will give her a strong look. Likewise, her pattern should be watery waves and spotty to emulate her semi aquatic lifestyle. With colors for skins ranging from greens, browns, blue, red, and white.

2) The Gigantoraptor

The gigantoraptor is a giant oviraptor, and one of the tallest dinosaurs in the game thanks to her long neck and legs.

I believe the gigantoraptor could be unique in terms of social and population. She could live in a social population between 3-7 members and live in an overall population of 20 members.

In regards to her diet, I think she would make for a great candidate for an omnivore dinosaur. She could eat both meat and plant matter and would have an equal chance eating from both with no preference, to eat whatever is available.

But to make things interesting, she will have one of the more unique compatibility with dinosaurs. The gigantoraptor could live alongside armored herbivores, medium herbivores, sauropods, and small carnivores. However, she will be a threat to small herbivores and large carnivores. I think this will emphasis her omnivorous behavior, but her selective choice of prey. She will happily munch alongside edmontosaurus, triceratops and velociraptors without causing much panic (expect for any small carnivores wanting to pester her, she will have none of that). But if a struthiomimus was wondering by her vicinity, she would not mind having some meat with her salad. Likewise, large carnivores have to think twice before trying her out, for she could deliver some deadly blows with her kicks.

This selective choice of predation and prey will make the gigantoraptor very unique in terms of exhibit building. She is not one to mess with an ankylosaur and would have a hard time chasing down and kicking a large hadrosaur, but she will pick on the small herbivore that passes by her reach. She will make a great addition in a predator exhibit, or prey exhibit, or an ecosystem all the same: It is up to the player to decide.


In terms of looks, I think she should have a bit of a dilophosaurus treatment. She should have a look similar to the sarada lizard.

The sarada lizard is really unique for being one of the few lizards to have a colorful throat display. It will be really creative to give the gigantoraptor an extendable display similar to the dilophosaurus. Certain birds would have really colorful displays, but since feathers would not be an option, then we need to find a creature that has a similar display niche. The Gigantoraptor would not have an intimidating roar compared to the giant carnivores of jurassic world, and would not be as bulky as the imposing Tyrannosaurus and spinosaurus, so she could display that throat frill to make herself appear bigger. Likewise, she could use the same frill in a display contest against other gigantoraptor and to scare off smaller carnivores with the frill display alongside some stomps.

In regards to coloration, she should be similar to the proceratosaurus and olorotitan. She would be colorful with one basic color for the body with some slight pattern, but have her throat display and small crest on her head be the brightest and most vivid part of her overall look.

3) The Therizinosaurus

Finally, we have dinosaur #1. The most requested dinosaur to be included in jurassic world evolution.

The therizinosaurus would have a more solitary lifestyle, similar to the dreadnoughtus, she could alone or live in small groups and tolerate a good enough population. 1-3 social with 15 for population.


As for her diet, she is a strict herbivore, to which she must be able to eat from both small feeders and tall feeders. This is crucial as it would add to the paleobotany of the game even more. There is a strong exclusivity with the tall feeders in the game. They could only be used by sauropods and have a sauropod only paleo diet without consequence. Having the therizinosaurus in the game would have players to decide how to combine the food options of her feeders, as she could access both tall and standard feeders if she will have exhibit mates.

In regards to combat, simply put, she is only a danger to the large carnivores in the game. Nothing special, but she will have to be designed as one of the most powerful herbivores in the game, one that could rival in strength to the large carnivores in game.

In regards to looks, she may not have feathers, but I factually believe that she could make use of quills. All of this is thanks to the indominus rex and indoraptor in the game.

These hybrids are unique in that they are the only two in the game with some resemblance of feathers. Though it is not a full coat, it is enough for them to have a distinctive look.

Anyone who has looked into the indominus rex would know that they are made with multiple traits from different dinosaurs. One trait is the implementation of Therizinosaurus genes to give her the large arms and claws. So far, all of the dinosaurs that makes up the indominus rex lack the feathers we see on her with the exception of the velociraptor which has a feathered variant in Isla Sorna, and the Therizinosaurus, who is now acceptably depicted with feathers.

The fact that the indominus rex has quills would give the Therizinosaurus the chance to have quills of her own as she is one of the dinosaurs who makes up her genome. This could be used to further the lore of the relation between the therizinosaurus and Indominus rex. But to make this lore stronger these quills should be limited to the therizinosaurus' head, elbow area, back, and possibly tail if they wish to add more quills than the hybrids.

This should still respect the rule of no feathers as the therizinosaurus would still be notably scaly. And the creativity of a quilled dinosaur would lead to some awesome looks such as this picture below. This would allow for an overall unique look for the therizinosaurus and be the first non-hybrid dinosaur to have quills as a feature.

In regards to skins and colors, I wish to see the therizinosaurus have similar skins to the tyrannosaurus rex, browns, reds, blacks, and greens. This will be cool to give them a giant sloth like look, but also to make a subtle connection between the tyrannosaurs and therizinosaurs as therapods.

Ultimately, I would love to see such designs to be implemented into designing dinosaurs. JWE is a great platform to introduce some new ideas to dinosaurs as the theme of genetic modification would lead to mutations of the dinosaurs. Each dinosaur in the game has some glaring scientific accuracies but has lead to some very interesting looking dinosaurs I experienced in a video game. Just because a dinosaur could not have feathers does not mean that the design outcomes should be limited. I would love to see these dinosaurs be in the game, but I am just as excited to see how Frontier could implement some cool designs for these 3 creatures specifically.

Please let me know what you all think of this direction? Would you be okay if some added creative liberty would be used in the dinosaurs in JWE? I would love to see what could be made for some dinosaurs in this game, as I believe this game would allow for some really cool dinosaur ideas that tests the limits of imagination of these creatures. To further support the therizinosaurus:

Therizinosaurus could definitely utilize the tall herbivore feeder, but with a diet thatā€™s different from sauropods. Tree ferns are exclusively good for sauropods, but if they were to make tree ferns bad for therizinosaurs, this can be a great concept to really plan your exhibits if you plan to mix both types that use the same paleo feeders in your enclosures. (Like this: conifers can be good for both types. Therizinosaurs can have a plant thatā€™s good for them but will be bad for sauropods. Ginkgo can be good for sauropods, but isnā€™t positive or negative to therizinosaurs.)

Also, therizinosaurus could be classified as a ā€œgiant herbivoreā€, making it the first non-sauropod dinosaur to be classified as such and the first ā€œgiant herbivoreā€ to be able to go into combat.




There are already non-feathered designs for therizinosaurus and gigantoraptor elsewhere, so designing their models shouldnā€™t be to hard to plan out either.

I was mainly thinking that this is a chance to make something unexpected. We are so used to scaly dinosaurs, you could remove feathers but we need something special for these 3 and possibly upcoming dinosaurs. To not only be limited by their skeletal structure and common acceptance of dinosaur looks.
 
I guess weā€™ll just be sticking with good old Oviraptor for advanced theropods. At least that has proven to work for a reptilian appearance like Veloci.
Side Note: Is it just me, or does dinosaurs to birds seem to be the worst evolutionary public relations with illogical language, ugly imagery, and downright animal racism concerning reptiles? I apologize for the strong language, but our scaly friends donā€™t get nearly as much love as the feathered ones.

Hey, it's no worries.

I think dinosaurs to birds is actually one of the best things going for the dinosaurs as an entire species in regards to depiction. It's not just feathers but also how they acted, moved, communicated, and overall look that makes them much more appealing compared to their old sluggish reptilian like depictions. This transition is what made jurassic park so unique, in which they are more bird like as animals.

Also it's actually kind of cool that not all dinosaurs had feathers, one of my favorites, the carnotaurus, is probably more reptile like in appearance than bird like because of the patterning of their skin impressions. Making the giant meat eating bull more terrifying! Likewise, I think theropods like the velociraptor line and some tyrannosaurus are the only ones to be classified with a full coat of feathers. Every other species from sauropods, spinosaurs, hadrosaurs and stegosaurs are accepted to not have feathers. Then again I could be wrong.

But I will say the opposite holds true, I think scaly dinosaurs get more love than feathered as large amounts of artworks, movies, tv shows, and documentaries still have them in scales. I donā€™t think feathers are a bad thing, but it has to make sense to the dinosaur how they look like with feathers. They could be as awesome with feathers if done right.
 
My apologies, Sparx. Itā€™s just that feathered dinosaurs tend to attract a special kind of stupidity in the evolutionary community. Fish to Amphibians, Terrestrial Artiodactyls to Whales, and even Ape to Man presentations succeed even in the worst quality, but feather promoters sometimes have the aura of a Jehovahā€™s Witness on your doorstep. The science is probably true, but the reptilian heritage taking a backseat to all of this is truly depressing. If its any consolation, EDU Graphics makes it work. Rant Over.

I hear that... I mean, we know there are dinosaurs that had feathers, but some people seem to believe literally all dinosaurs need feathers now, even though there's plenty of evidence indicating that lots of dinosaurs didn't have them (or would even need them)... and this is coming from a guy who loves the idea of a feather-covered T-Rex...

You must know that there are people from the general internet who aggressively oppose outdated or intended art liberties just because want every person on Earth to be downright ā€œrightā€ about paleontology every single time no matter what it takes. They see some stuff that is the opposite of what is currently known to science and feel like they (those viewers) were wrong as they study the sciences and try to spread it out so everyone becomes ā€œrightā€ because seeing the incrorrect stuff away from known science in their view is ā€œwrongā€ for the world.

I know this because when I wanā€™t a high school student yet, I was like that before, but not anymore as I matured.

Science constantly changes, even some the most groundbreaking discoveries can change with future studies and discoveries if they can, like for example, the lifestyle theories and studies for spinosaurus in this past decade with multiple studies that say different things from each other as the years pass. So there isnā€™t really a known ā€œtruthā€ in every single current known paleontologic subject.

Yes I've seen the pictures and such. I think their reconstructions are very shrink-wrapped in the faces. I think they should also have lips. The amount of feathers seems plausible.

Thanks for updating the list, I am curious to see what species of dinosaurs have feathers and what don't, and how much of the feathers are shown.

Also pardon me, to be on the topic of this thread could I ask for your feedback on the concepts for the three dinosaurs if they were integrated into JWE? I was thinking how these 3 dinosaurs could be integrated if feathers are out of the equation and would like your feedback on it.

Quills on a Therizinosaur would be nice. I wish they put quills on more of the theropod designs where it would fit. The throat waddle might also be an interesting look.
I often see Gigantoraptor reconstructions with lots of colours and extra soft tissue. But I'm not a big fan of that look. I'd prefer it dull and beige as the desert.
 
In regards to the Therizinosaurus, do you think it should eat with her tongue like how megatherium would be depicted to eat from leaves? I think it could be interesting if she has a bit of a character from the standard munching animations sauropods would have with tall feeders. I would still like for her to reach out with her claws to help get the leaves closer to her head.

Personally, I see it just only using its claws to bring food down to its face, where it grabs a bunch of leaves to much on.
 
This thread is super nostalgic, hard to imagine it was written in 2019, 4 years is a long time....

After today's announcement, Jurassic World Evolution 2 now has all 3 of these animals in the game! What is special is that the sequel not only introduced these animals but was able to implement a rendering technique to introduce feathered animals into the game!


Back in May 2022, we were introduced to the new Biosyn Sanctuary DLC, which would introduce some new animals and skins such as the Pyroraptor, Therizinosaurus, Quetzalcoatlus, and feathered T-rex skin. What makes this interesting is how these new additions make use of the feather and fur rendering implemented into the sequel. It has done a great deal in bringing about dinosaurs that were fully coated in feathers, and helped flesh out the roster with new fluffy members, especially with the dedicated feathered species pack!

Overall, each new addition that utilizes the feather and Fur feature has worked well in the new game and has blended well into the Jurassic World/Park style.

This dinosaur was a highly requested animal since the early years of Jurassic World Evolution and was later revealed to be one of the new dinosaurs to star in 2022's Jurassic World Dominion Movie.

The overall design is one of my favorites when it comes to the canon Jurassic World animals, especially with how the animal looks terrifying for an herbivore. Its tall size, upright posture, long claws, and cat-like eyes really make it look vicious for a herbivore. The decision to cover the animal with small feathers on the back, head, tail, and arms is a nice direction. Too many feathers may remove the intimidation this animal is meant to invoke, while still feathery enough to make it stand out from the traditionally scaley JP dinosaurs.

The head is noticeably larger and boxier than what these animals are often depicted with. While it looks somewhat toyetic, it still looks really intimidating thanks to the short feathers, cat eyes, and small beak.

Overall, I really like how Frontier has adapted the Therizinosaurus in JWE2, she is always a fun addition when I get the chance to unlock her. Her niche as an ultra-aggressive herbivore is a lot of fun as well, and I did like how she was later updated to only liking having tiny dinosaurs around her enclosure and nothing else.

While not a part of the character design, my only gripe is despite having this be one of the tallest herbivores in the game, rivaling the reach of some sauropods, she only ever eats from low vegetation. I would love it if they allowed her to eat from high vegetation more often, as she is built to browse from much higher vegetation, still, seeing her use her claws to forage food while resting down is a very cute and nice touch. Overall, a fantastic inclusion.


DEINOCHEIRUS

A later inclusion with the feathered species pack, this dinosaur has gotten quite the burst in popularity thanks to her recent inclusion in Apple's Prehistoric Planet. Having quite the mystery about her anatomy, this animal is like a strange platypus when it comes to dinosaurs.

She is one of the most adorable inclusions from what I have observed. She has a full and fluffy look thanks to her thick coat of feathers and noticeably large tail, with an odd yet fitting inclusion of a side beard. Much more surprising is that not only is she the largest ornithomimus in the game, but is the only one that lacks teeth! This is something I was happy to see, as having teeth on this animal would be too much.

She is the only omnivore that eats both plants and fish and is capable of defending herself. One thing I really like is how dynamic her posture is. When relaxed, she would be in a posture parallel to the ground, but when she is raring to fight, she would position herself to be as upright as possible with her arms wide open. I really love this change in posture, as it goes from dopey herbivore to aggressive giant, making herself look much larger despite her already large size! The way she tackles medium carnivores simply complements the weirdness of this animal!

This is such a fun animal and one that cohabits comfortably with other animals, unlike the therizinosaurus. Her odd anatomy and piscivorous diet make her one of the best inclusions in the game, and one that I find myself liking a lot, it has always been a pleasure to incubate a batch of deinocheirus in my parks.

One of the latest additions to Jurassic World Evolution 2, the Gigantorapor will be arriving with the Concavenator, Utahraptor, and Tarbosaurus in the upcoming Cretaceous Predator Pack!

While we only have images and the announcement trailer to go by before the launch of the DLC in a week's time, I am downright enthralled by the way she looks.

I was curious what she would look like especially when knowing how Jurassic World Dominion showcased the oviraptor, so far, I really like what they have done with this animal. Thanks to her upright posture, bird-like features, and noticeable casque, this animal may be Jurassic World Evolution's cassowary, considering she is part of the predator pack, she might as well have the temperament to match!

It has to be said that the feather placement on this animal looked like a lot of fun was had!

With colorful feathers making up her crest, tail, and wings, the Gigantoraptor looks to be an extravagant attraction for anyone's park. Not only do the feathers make for a great display, but we also get a small glimpse of seeing her use her wings as a means to scare off any opposers, maybe similar to how Gigantoraptor uses her wings in planet dinosaurs. One detail I also really like is the stray feathers that pop up around her neck, as they give off a strong wild ferociousness that compliments and balances out her otherwise elegant adornment of feathers.

I am looking forward to observing this animal in motion when she launches next week, as we do have many predators in the game, this one may be the most bird-like. Will she kick her opponents in a bird-like manner? Will she gobble up goats, guests, and small animals whole? Will her social animation incorporate a dance? These are things I am most excited to see firsthand when the DLC launches next Thursday!




It has been a few years since I brought up the topic of how the Therizinosaurs, Gigantoraptor, and Deinocheirus could be implemented into the game. It was written at a time when feathered dinosaurs were not yet an accepted part of the Jurassic Park/World design mythos, and the roster we had then really needed some new additions to freshen up the selection of dinosaurs. I brought up these three as they have diets, anatomy, niches, and possibly behavior not that common in dinosaurs, which would make for great attractions for the Jurassic World zoo sim management game.

Now writing this new post in 2023, all I can say is that I am over the moon with these additions ā­ļø

They look phenomenal in Jurassic World Evolution 2, while still having feathers incorporated into their designs. Not only do they look great, but they move and sound great too! These dinosaurs are dinosaurs I like to incorporate into my parks, and I am still having a hard time believing that they are in the same sim game.

Jurassic World Evolution 2 is such an improvement, incorporating so many new additions with dinosaurs, buildings, decor, biomes, and management that makes it my favorite game to come back to time and time again. I want to thank the wonderful team behind these games at Frontier Developments for putting in so much time, effort, and passion to build this game to where it is now. There is more to love and enjoy with Jurassic World Evolution 2 with each new update, with the launch of the Cretaceous Predator Pack and Update 8 being a wonderful one to enjoy in the last month of 2023.
