well now that would be cool - actually seeing the constellations relative to your position within the galaxy - there's a neat proposition. To have the light magnitudes relative as well. Very scary proposition.

With the graphic detail I assume the game will have, how good will it be to land on the moon and watch the earth rise?

I hope to be too busy wandering around the moon colony doing missions or getting slowly inebriated in one of the many classy establishments :D

You can already watch the Earth From the Moon in FE2, I doubt however, that even the E4, no matter how detailed will give us pleasure of watching the Earth set and rise from the surface of the Moon.

There are certain insurmountable barriers.

Yeah, glffe shows it nicely as well...

...which I was quite impressed with until I remembered the Earth doesn't actually "rise" as seen from the Moon. The best you get is phases. At least the distance is correct

True, even in FE2, that part was wrong. It'd be cool to have all the bodies in Sol
with correct rotation axes and periods.

Edit:
Regarding GLFFE with replaced cockpit graphics - how to manually set the targets in orbital map, how to set time-point in orbital map and, finally, how to make the game display revamped icons for misiles and camera?

Where did those icons come from? You can actually see what they say, unlike the original ones...

Edit: Yep, I also hope that Elite IV features proper planetary distances, I always found it odd that the Moon was this little tiny blob when viewed from Earth.

how to manually set the targets in orbital map
Press "T" and then click on the target

how to set time-point in orbital map
Kolijoco decided not to implement this feature, for some reason. You can use the cursor keys to move the time point back and forwards, but I can't find a way of speeding that up eg. shift+key

how to make the game display revamped icons for misiles and camera?
I managed to fix the mining and camera icons - instructions are towards the bottom of this page - but the missile icons escape me. Kolijoko seems to have disappeared from the scene as well :(

Isn't nature a spoilsport!:(

You can always fly slowly across the surface of the moon, and then watch the Earth rise or set.

lol - I was about to say the same thing :D

What might also be fun is figuring out how far in the future we are, plotting the probable trajectory for Voyager or similar and seeing if we can find it :D

Someone will always get there before you and destroy it!

Heh maybe that could be a bit of fun for a competition from Frontier like the old Elite status comp from the original BBC game.

Acornsoft must also be credited with a great deal of the praise for the early impact of the game. A competition was devised based on the concept of becoming the best - the Elite. The competition was run at the end of each month after release, for six months. Results were published in the most popular games magazines. The play-off between the six winners went on to the grand final at the Acorn User Show. Not only was it the first home videgame-related competition of its time, but more importantly it became an anti-piracy measure. Looking back, Braben marvels at the way the competition prevented lost revenues to the pirates. "It was very interesting actually, chatting to people who had entered. I asked them, 'Did you buy the game?'. 'Erm, no,' they said, 'But when I realised I was in with a chance I thought, right, I can do better than that.' They went out and bought the game just to get the entry card."

I remember when I used to play Virus on my Amiga, if I got a good score I would be presented with a competition entry number, but I never knew how to submit my score...I wonder if anyone ever did.

Yeah I think I remember that with Zarch but was never good enough to really get anywhere significant.

I have two bits of advice:

To dock in Elite:

-Approach the space station so that you are facing almost perfectly towards the entry port. The hexagon around it should be perfectly symmetrical from your view.
-Move towards it at a very low speed. As you get very close (the rectangle is almost filling your screen), stop the ship and use the left/right thrusters to spin the ship so it is mimicking the motion of the station. If you get this correct then the rectangular entry port should be horizontal to you, and unmoving.
-Start towards the station again and you should dock happily.

Don't bother with Elite
Elite was the most intriguing game of its generation because of the scope which they managed to fit into such low-tech computers. But it really wasn't a very user-friendly game at all. The frustration levels often ruined what was the most immersive experience so far in any computer game.
When Frontier and First Encounters came along, we had our huge Elite universe and open-ended gameplay, but it was user-friendly enough that anyone could get into it.
So i recommend you use one of these instead.
I personally recommend GLFFE. Do a search for it and you will find it.
any problems, report back.

I once had a game where I seemed to be able to go on ad infinitum, getting more and more spare lives. I had to just give up in the end. Was level 30 or 40 or something I think.
