Development Update 1 - June

It is so disappointing to see the Community Management Team of a game I love and play to death, treat the player base so shambolically (except Sally - she is awesome!).
I'm going to push back a little here: nobody in the CM team has any say as to what they get to communicate. Arthur is just the guy who is paid to tell us what the higher ups want him to say. If they first tell him to promise us X and Y, and then tell him to not do it anyway, that is what he has to do. Don't shoot the messengers, shoot at the guys behind them.

So....

  1. Improvements to lighting - We fixed it!
  2. Degraded terrain textures compared to Horizons - We're still working on it.
  3. Planetary features that appear to repeat - We don't know how to fix this.
  4. Anarchy factions and the BGS - We think we've fixed it.
  5. FPS performance in Odyssey - We're still working on it.

Is that right?

Cheers,

Drew.
No.3...... when Dav Stott talked of his order to as many team members as he could muster; 'Tomorrow we BAKE!' (as in a concentrated period of time and frenetic work with as many hands on deck as possible)... they then identified for themselves, now unknowable numbers of planets/moons/bodies to hand place assets/visual artifacts.

With the terrain repeating artifacts I think the 'interns' (and whoever else that could be mustered) were tasked to stamp with their 'potato' stamps or 'cookie cutters' the repeating eyesores across the galaxy.

Of course now the 'hand' damage is done there is absolutely no practical way for FDev to turn the clock back and remove all the repeating rubber stamp eyesores from each and every unknown body in the galaxy .... so our eye will be continually and inexorably drawn to each and every repeating excrescence from now on; IF we decide to continue playing (especially exploring). o7

See Dav's explanation from 19:35 onwards.

Edit: I'm fully aware Dav is here talking about installations but I believe the 'Bakeout' process was used for the cookie cutter problems as well. Dav at several points mentioned Dr Kay (in charge of planet 'tech')

what does the person responsible for this failure look like to me now

Sorry, all times been spent this month on previewing tomorrows stream with the same information.

I think it would be easier to extract holy texts from the Vatican than getting FD to talk and take action with Powerplay.
I am 99% sure they simply dont want to spend time on it. There was a brief moment where they considered it, years ago, and thats it. On a list of priorities it doesn't make their top100 and they barely have the resources for the top3.

It sucks, because while I gave up on PP years ago I would jump back instantly if they bothered to paid even some tiny bit of attention to it. It has a cool interface, a cool concept, it could be the perfect end-game pvp (combat and otherwise) thingie. But its not, and I doubt it will be.

It don't go any higher than Davy. And he went silent. Ok, ok I'm off.

Unwind Odyssey ? Why ? No !
Well seriously... 5 weeks after launch, a rollback would probably do more harm to the game than carrying on in addressing its issues.
Personally, except for the remaining bugs and performance issues, I find odyssey more enjoyable than Horizon now (which was not the case 3 weeks ago).

Have you tried odyssey recently ?
People play Star Citizen - that isn't a reasonable game either. Happy days for you if you enjoy it. I'm telling Frontier that I believe that releasing it was an error and that it makes no sense in a universe building context. All they have done is release an extremely poor facsimile of an FPS game in boring and repetitive instances which add nothing to lore, environment or a feeling of population. It is like they have just created these FPS arenas that you drop into for some pew pew and that is frankly crap.

Wow, thanks for the enlighting post. It's clear you are having major issues to solve Odyssey problems because, of course, it's released in alpha state. And also you have no future plans. After tomorrow's patch, we'll get at the most performance fixes on PC or, in the worst case, no patches until the console release. Not bad.

On a side note, the promisse of improved communications is really showing! :ROFLMAO:

You know, in EVE online, in view of the strong influence of the players on the gameplay, they managed to somehow dictate their vision to the developers inside the game.
In our case, we are silent slaves. From a company perspective, our features include buying DLC and buying ARX. The rest should not worry us. Just go to work, save money and buy more ARX. Do you have any hopes? Do you have desires? Pfft, please, count all your desires, multiply by 1000 and buy this amount of ARX. And your desires will definitely come true. May be. Not in this life so in the next.

To be fair, people 'test' Star Citizen, and pay to do so. It at no point claims to be a finished product, ready for general release.

To be honest, people "test" Star Citizen and pay for it. And they are well aware of the state of this product "in many cases deplorable", but they know the details and details of this deplorable state. Nobody hangs noodles on them.

Prior to the release of this misunderstanding, the elite were viewed as a complete, complete game. Now it looks like a bucket of bolts.

So they drafted that only today? Oof. Shooting from the hip then, not a great sign.
I had that impression also - pretty much the same as the "roadmap" that arrived at 17:00 - although it may have been multiple reads & re-drafts that slowed this one.
I guess you can play it that way - which will agitate people (it did get my back hair up a little bit I have to say) further but I guess they're boss.
Sorry, the tactic makes some sense - 30-odd pages now, probably 80-odd by tomorrow and all saying pretty much the same - there was nothing they could sensibly do today to smooth over the content they posted.
I had low expectations myself, but they, again, managed to underwhelm once more
I agree, 100%, that there was nothing of substance to encourage players, quite the opposite in fact.
Having said that - if Frontier would offer me one (they won't I'm sure) I think I would actually take them up on it.
I would too, for both copies, without asking any questions.

That isn't to say that I dislike Odyssey - I've been able to play with useable FPS by reducing my screen resolution and changing a few detail settings - so have had, and am having, a ball playing surface content.

But (and there always is a but!), alpha was better looking, more stable and in general better performing than the released product.
The released product feels unfinished, and the CMs are hinting toward content coming out around console launch, despite the PC product allegedly being 'complete'. This is not what I was under the impression I was buying, I'm not best pleased.

Performance – We know there is more to do here, but we are pleased to see some players reporting notable improvements for particular configurations
Performance – We know there is more to do here, but we are pleased to see some players reporting notable fractional improvements for particular configurations and recognise it has got worse for some players
