Development Update 2 - July

Whilst I know it's a broken record , any news about consoles ? The forgotten few ? The unmentionables ? The scum of the universe ? To be forgotten left in a corner of a dark basement with nothing not even a crumb of news .
Why not get a few FPS combat missions on the training pages for us .
Give us at least something to show that you still love us .
I'm not expecting dates and stuff but no mention of anything ?? Is a bit disheartening and worrying for the consoles . With the rise of the naysayers we don't even know if you are going to make it onto console ?!!!!!
So don't ignore us and hope we and that bad smell goes away . The longer you guys leave it the less we will trust you .

unfortunately that is probably not going to happen, if a 1200+ euro/pound/usd gaming pc is struggling at times to perform well, how can you expect a PS4 too?

In order to port this to console a lot of optimisation needs to be done, this will take a few months. Those optimisations need to be done on a core level of the planetary and FPS tech. Those changes are happening now for PC and being phased in, but to release this to console they need a pretty optimised build.

Consoles getting the same broken experience as PC does not benefit anyone, so it's good (although sad) that you need to wait for a more polished product.

I want all the people and players and users that said anything negative about Odyssey lately, to retract all their salt and negativity.
Also, I want all Youtubers like Yamiks, that sparked all the negative speeches and insults or whatever bad thing they said about CM's, developers and staff, to publicly apologize.
Frontier is working hard to provide us our hobby game and even a second life for some of us and they all do is spark endless debates and curse, influence people in most negative way.
I'm curious if they will shift their opinion now :)
The new planets ... ❤️ I need an exploration ship now :D
P.S. Oh wait, I have a Clipper from my Avatar

Negativity about odyssey:
This developer update and the new direction does not make up for the odyssey release we've experienced (in its current form), that is riddled with issues and clearly incomplete.

The reason Fdev switched focus from console to enriching odyssey is because of the negativity around the release.
I'm not saying you should thank <insert name here> and others for being so negative about the game, but you should understand where those comments came from and the affect the mass-amount of people have had on changing odysseys development direction on the short term.

Keep in mind a lot of that negativity was still constructive, it stated the problem but also gave ideas and solutions on ways forward. At the beginning a lot more trust and positive energy was coming from the community despite the issues.
The more dark tones came about because the response from frontiers did not meet expectations at that time.

Fdev needing an apology from the community:
People who have been abusive need to do more than apologse, but thats clearly not what you meant.

Giving constructive negative feedback on the game can do more to improve it than negatively impact it.
But it's important that frontiers takes the feedback in and communicates how it will do better. (which they're working on and it's appreciated)

Frontiers needs to earn back trust at the moment, not the other way around.

Working hard / on our hobby:
Working hard is not the same as working smart, we know frontier developers are working hard. But as an organisation they haven't been working as smart.
Things are slowly turning around and im hoping this a learning moment for everyone (including us as a community).

Our Hobby: you seem to think they build this game for us, in part that is true.
But keep in mind they're in the business of making money. They work hard to continue to make good money.

Additionally it being our hobby or not, a certain level of expectation of quality is important and mis-managing that can easily become a legal issue (cyberpunk 2077).

In closing:
Frontiers aren't evil, they made some mistakes and so have we as a community (in part).
But i think it's important to be objective as much as possible. As to not invalidate the issues or concerns from either side of this issue.

Frontiers could become more transparent and have more open discussions on certain features, this can help a lot with funnelling people to information instead of CMs getting bombarded by the same questions.

Greetings Commanders,

With the end of July closing in on us faster than a getaway Mamba with illegal cargo, we wanted to share our second monthly developer update with you now.

As mentioned in David Braben’s recent post, we have adjusted our planning to retain our development focus on the PC version of Odyssey before revisiting our plans for console. This change in planning will mean we are able to deliver more bug fixes, performance improvements, as well as some new features and content.

Issue Tracker

Similar to last month, we would like to update you on key issues as voted for by our community on the Issue Tracker. You can visit the Issue Tracker and vote for your top issues or make a report.

1. Lighting and Illumination in Odyssey
  • Changes in Update 6 will address lighting issues, however we’ll continue to monitor any feedback and make adjustments if necessary.
2. Degraded terrain textures compared to Horizons
  • Update 6 will bring significant improvements in this area, however we’ll keep the issue open for further feedback and make adjustments if necessary.
3. FPS performance in Odyssey
  • Further improvements and optimisations have been made which will be deployed in Update 6. Significant work is underway to improve this further.
4. Cargo Canisters get stuck in the Megaship
  • Fixed for release in Update 6.
5.Hyford's Cache missing Scannable Data Point
  • Fixed – awaiting deployment (Update 6 / maintenance).
6. Retrieval from crash site mission POIs no longer appear
  • Fixed – awaiting deployment (Update 6 / maintenance).
7. Odyssey sticks at “Loading Game” when launch
  • Fixed for release in Update 6.

Upcoming Updates and Content

As promised, we also wanted to share with you work in progress content and improvements which will arrive in future updates.

While bug fixes and performance improvements remain a priority and activities such as narrative, events, and community goals will continue. However, our new approach allows us to add further content and features.

This month, we would like to share some of the content currently in development. Please note these are at varying stages of progress, and other content is also being considered. Please also note they are not final and are subject to change. We will keep you updated with news and details as they progress and we expect the content to release over the coming few updates.

Planned for later this week (Update 6)

Planetary Colour Improvements

Planetary bodies will see a number of improvements. Explorers will find new planetary colouration which will increase vibrancy and variety. These improvements will still be grounded with real science, but will offer a much richer experience for those looking to forge their own path through the black. Here are a few examples:

There will also be further variation with the addition of earthy, gritty, and dirty ice worlds. These new textures will add even more variety. Here we can see a frozen CO2 and a tholin rich ice planet.

View attachment 252453View attachment 252454

Planetary Surface Improvements
Planet surfaces will also be getting an uplift with the following:

Improved surface texture detail, improved Ice materials, increased volcanism, improved lighting and the integration of new AMD technology FSR (which works on all GPUs) will bring a significant improvement to planetary surfaces visuals and allow for some improved performance.

View attachment 252455View attachment 252456

Camera Suite
Nothing would accompany all of these visual upgrades better than improvements to our camera suite. On the surface, we’ve reduced blackout intersections in the vast majority of scenarios. However, under the hood, we have actually implemented a whole new collision detection system which will allow you to move the camera freely around a settlement or social space and avoid bumping into those problem blackout spots.

Rocket Troops at Military Installations
AI rocket troops will be added to military bases providing a greater challenge for Commanders approaching in SRVs.

Please note these features will be accompanied by a vast number of other improvements, tweaks and fixes which will be detailed in a dedicated forum post ahead of release.

Future Updates

Here are other features currently in development, which are planned for future updates. As we get closer to their release, we will announce which of these will be included in each update with further details:

Four Player Multicrew
Four Commanders will be able to board ships together for the first time, with a number of ships set to be equipped with a fourth cockpit seat, including several Commander favourites.

New Odyssey Engineers in Colonia
This is a much requested community feature and we’re pleased to oblige. We’ll be revealing more detail around these engineers soon.

Air Defence Turrets in Conflict Zones
We recognise that further balancing is required between on foot commanders and ships entering Conflict Zones. As such, further defence turrets will be added to Conflict Zones with associated on foot gameplay.

Increased Stored Module Capacity and Bookmark Numbers
These are long requested community features which will arrive in the near future.

Mission Feature Extensions
We will be expanding mission features for Odyssey with the aim to increase mission diversity and also create stronger links between the in-cockpit and on foot game.

Apex Redirect
This will allow passengers to redirect their Apex shuttle mid-flight, to return to the port of departure, or divert their Apex shuttle to another location, fuel permitting.

As mentioned, this list is not exhaustive and we will be sharing more details on the content mentioned above and future, unannounced content in further monthly development updates and across our other channels.

Thank you as always for your continued feedback and support.

What about this?

If grinding was already hugely time consuming (that means, no fun playing), this is a game stopper.

So ditching consoles for good at least has some results for PC players. I didn't expect Elite's development to take this turn, I believed in Frontier, but it's clear consoles were a mistake for this team. I'm happy for PC CMDRs, though.

before revisiting our plans for console

Console will be coming, but they were over-ambitious on their release schedule.

In theory they could make a next (current) gen ps5 + release of elite and odyssey, that follows close to the PC release.
Then work a few extra months on additional optimisations for PS4 / last gen consoles.
As a way to phase in console releases and have the performance budget of new / current gen consoles to buffer the performance issues.

It may also mean that if odyssey is simply too ambitious for old hardware, then at least it's they are there for the new gen consoles (and sooner).

Might i also add that the Steam Deck is now a thing and only 399? ;)

Maybe it's still not clear enough that they are not ditching consoles for PC, it's that they CAN'T make it work on consoles right now... (as well as they are still trying to make it work on PC...)

Hmm just upgraded to series X ... From my ole Xbox one . Whilst I agree with the actions and thought processes to why. I would still like to see some mention of where Fdev are at for consoles . At the moment I'm not even sure they will manage the console port , before Christmas ( I'm waiting for Autumn 2022) if it comes at all ? I'm all EDO'd out I've read all the bad bits all the good bits and seen some really good stuff and cried at the really bad stuff , but nothing has made me think yeah I will buy it .
At the begining I was all for buying EDO because I love the game it's my comfort place . Still playing EDH but .....

Just please- please do not cram them into fighters or anything out of place. My brain still throbs from having a space superiority fighter (Vulture) as a dropship....when we have a ship called a Dropship thats for dropping troops.

THIS. Why in the holy name of heck was that decision made?! We literally have a purpose-built ship in the game called a Dropship specifically for ground troop deployment, and when the time came to finally do that we went with the Vulture?!

I'm of the opinion that stuffing that extra seat into the Keelback ruined the feel of the cockpit. I wish they actually redesigned the cockpit to make it feel like the seat belongs. If they just start adding seats to ships like the Python and Krait, I can't imagine a place for those to go where it won't feel cramped* and look like a Photoshop copy-n-paste (like the Keelback).

* based on ED's spacious aesthetic.
Even so, I really hope the Krait gets the 4 seat treatment.

Well, the Dropship is supposed to be Federal only.

But, yeah, there's no reason they couldn't use the Dropship as a bigger dropship for the Feds, the Clipper for the Imperials, one of the C-ships for the Alliance, and maybe a beefed up Asp MkII for independents.

Would make sense, and give the Dropship and Clipper more of a role.

I'd like to see different ships used as dropships by different factions, maybe Vultures and Viper MkIVs (occasionally seen in a dropship role currently) kept for smaller drops at low-intensity conflict zones, and larger ones that can drop multiple waves of troops through the hatch at once.

(Hatch size is fixed, obvs, but the bigger ships could fit a troop conveyor system or something)

Would mean a slight tweak to how conflict zones work, but not a huge change.

Missions to convey troops to these zones while avoiding interception would be cool too.

Where's that seat going to go? Better yet, why does everyone need a seat on the bridge to be a passenger on a ship? Even private jets separate the cockpit from the passenger lounge. Sounds like a good reason to expand ship interiors rather than cram more chairs into an already crowded cockpit.

Imagine if Frontier made passenger modules an actual ship interior where players could go during travel time. They could use a generic room model for each module, with a "fade to black" mechanism for players to enter and exit these rooms. This would make it possible to haul even more than four players without having to ruin a bunch of cockpits.

I just find the "stuff more chairs in the cramped cockpit" a messy hack when ships like the Krait have HUGE spaces behind the cockpit that could be used for player transport. Worse, we'll be getting this hack (extra seats) whether we have any interest in large multicrews or not, unless Frontier releases separate variations of ships like the "Krait Cramped" so that we can choose.

Well, i guess they'll add it to large ships with fighter hangar capability like the cutter, che corvette, the beluga, the panther clipper, the anaconda and the type-10, but yes, it would be nice to some medium multicrew ships like the krait mkII, the fedral gunship and the alliance crusader, but i don't know if there's the room (or the forth could steal the bathroom to the npc crew member).

I agree with you entirely.

If the Apex Adder had 6 chairs during the Alpha, I am sure we will see many chairs everywhere!

Questionnnnn, if some ships are expected to get a fourth seat, is it possible that we're going to see the nose seat of the Anaconda resurrected from its grave as the fourth for it? Long has it been buried behind blacked out geometry curtain in the observation window, yet still it lay there, dormant, if one clips into the model.

Would be a cool opportunity anyway.

That'd be very cool!
