The repetition is really even worse than your picture implies, it's that whole big shape that's being repeated. To me it looks like a big fat lobster claw or something, and I see it everywhere. I see it 5 times on that planet on the right, and there are probably more claws on the other side!

Sure, but on the scale of a continent... but that's ok, instead of investing time / effort into reducing the large scale tiling, we'll add some pretty colours... unless that was already mostly done and they just ran out of time for the rush that was Odyssey's release.

They do look nice though, I can't deny and the tiling is not always obvious / in your face. But its just comical that out of a handful of planets they are using to show off new stuff, that there is tiling on a massive scale present :D

They aren't regenerating the galaxy for update 6, so ...

I didn't say anything about them regenerating it, in fact, I didn't really say anything at all, you just read into that.
I was just showing a tiling issue with their new showcase of colours/themed planets.

Sounds great. As long as the surface missions get fixed. Real tired of taking missions and wondering if they will actually be do-able. From missing crash sites to settlement kill missions which have everyone already dead when you get there... the list goes on. Having said that, it's still 90% enjoyable and the ground combat zones are awesome. Onward and upward!

This looks really nice! Any updates on when we get ship interiors or VR support? It's okay if it's in the future, I'd just like to know that it's being worked on!

There is nothing comical about showing off what you can expect to see... I think those planets are pretty much technical marvels but thats me

Big ships like the Anaconda, Corvette and Cutter etc should have a bridge bustling with npc crew doing there jobs. I mean there's no way in reality that a ship like these would be flown single-handed.
Elite is set what 1200 odd years in the future.

Look at what humanity was like during the period after Rome's collapse. That's the difference. After all both the British and Americans were using radio controlled battleships as target ships before WW2. So if we could control battleships via radio control before microprocessors existed I'm pretty sure in 1500 years time we can fully automate space ships.

A modern A380 can be flown by a single pilot. The only reason they have two pilots is because of rules and regulations. In the 1950's airliners had up to 7 depending on aircraft specifics. Likewise cargo ships. as few as 5 where before containserisation it could be in a hundred or so.

Greetings Commanders,

With the end of July closing in on us faster than a getaway Mamba with illegal cargo, we wanted to share our second monthly developer update with you now.

As mentioned in David Braben’s recent post, we have adjusted our planning to retain our development focus on the PC version of Odyssey before revisiting our plans for console. This change in planning will mean we are able to deliver more bug fixes, performance improvements, as well as some new features and content.

Issue Tracker

Similar to last month, we would like to update you on key issues as voted for by our community on the Issue Tracker. You can visit the Issue Tracker and vote for your top issues or make a report.

1. Lighting and Illumination in Odyssey
  • Changes in Update 6 will address lighting issues, however we’ll continue to monitor any feedback and make adjustments if necessary.
2. Degraded terrain textures compared to Horizons
  • Update 6 will bring significant improvements in this area, however we’ll keep the issue open for further feedback and make adjustments if necessary.
3. FPS performance in Odyssey
  • Further improvements and optimisations have been made which will be deployed in Update 6. Significant work is underway to improve this further.
4. Cargo Canisters get stuck in the Megaship
  • Fixed for release in Update 6.
5.Hyford's Cache missing Scannable Data Point
  • Fixed – awaiting deployment (Update 6 / maintenance).
6. Retrieval from crash site mission POIs no longer appear
  • Fixed – awaiting deployment (Update 6 / maintenance).
7. Odyssey sticks at “Loading Game” when launch
  • Fixed for release in Update 6.

Upcoming Updates and Content

As promised, we also wanted to share with you work in progress content and improvements which will arrive in future updates.

While bug fixes and performance improvements remain a priority and activities such as narrative, events, and community goals will continue. However, our new approach allows us to add further content and features.

This month, we would like to share some of the content currently in development. Please note these are at varying stages of progress, and other content is also being considered. Please also note they are not final and are subject to change. We will keep you updated with news and details as they progress and we expect the content to release over the coming few updates.

Planned for later this week (Update 6)

Planetary Colour Improvements

Planetary bodies will see a number of improvements. Explorers will find new planetary colouration which will increase vibrancy and variety. These improvements will still be grounded with real science, but will offer a much richer experience for those looking to forge their own path through the black. Here are a few examples:

There will also be further variation with the addition of earthy, gritty, and dirty ice worlds. These new textures will add even more variety. Here we can see a frozen CO2 and a tholin rich ice planet.

Planetary Surface Improvements
Planet surfaces will also be getting an uplift with the following:

Improved surface texture detail, improved Ice materials, increased volcanism, improved lighting and the integration of new AMD technology FSR (which works on all GPUs) will bring a significant improvement to planetary surfaces visuals and allow for some improved performance.

Camera Suite
Nothing would accompany all of these visual upgrades better than improvements to our camera suite. On the surface, we’ve reduced blackout intersections in the vast majority of scenarios. However, under the hood, we have actually implemented a whole new collision detection system which will allow you to move the camera freely around a settlement or social space and avoid bumping into those problem blackout spots.

Rocket Troops at Military Installations
AI rocket troops will be added to military bases providing a greater challenge for Commanders approaching in SRVs.

Please note these features will be accompanied by a vast number of other improvements, tweaks and fixes which will be detailed in a dedicated forum post ahead of release.

Future Updates

Here are other features currently in development, which are planned for future updates. As we get closer to their release, we will announce which of these will be included in each update with further details:

Four Player Multicrew
Four Commanders will be able to board ships together for the first time, with a number of ships set to be equipped with a fourth cockpit seat, including several Commander favourites.

New Odyssey Engineers in Colonia
This is a much requested community feature and we’re pleased to oblige. We’ll be revealing more detail around these engineers soon.

Air Defence Turrets in Conflict Zones
We recognise that further balancing is required between on foot commanders and ships entering Conflict Zones. As such, further defence turrets will be added to Conflict Zones with associated on foot gameplay.

Increased Stored Module Capacity and Bookmark Numbers
These are long requested community features which will arrive in the near future.

Mission Feature Extensions
We will be expanding mission features for Odyssey with the aim to increase mission diversity and also create stronger links between the in-cockpit and on foot game.

Apex Redirect
This will allow passengers to redirect their Apex shuttle mid-flight, to return to the port of departure, or divert their Apex shuttle to another location, fuel permitting.

As mentioned, this list is not exhaustive and we will be sharing more details on the content mentioned above and future, unannounced content in further monthly development updates and across our other channels.

Thank you as always for your continued feedback and support.

Thank you FDev for sharing the efforts you are making toward making this game a polished and more satisfying experience for this community of players. I don't speak out often but your outreach today encouraged me to express some thoughts. I mean to be mainly positive and constructive.

At the outset of the (rhymes with "schmandemic"), I invested in some VR equipement, built a PC out of assorted used parts I could scrounge, and started back playing some PC video games. I always enjoyed the space genre and my younger brother recommended I try ED.

I played this game A LOT this past year. I learned many things in the game "the hard way" and progress was slow. I unlocked most of the ship engineers at this point (outside of Colonia). I don't have enough key materials for some of the upgrades so I tend to swap modules between similarly-sized ships a lot. I like mining, but many of the various rocks, metals and resources are ignored because they fetch a poor price or simply play no advantage in the game. I enjoyed a recent CG that required a specific material to be mined in order to count ie. if the material - I think it was tritium was purchased at a market, it could not be sold for CG credit. That was a very clever way for the animators of the game to encourage mining. It would be great, and probably easy, for the developers to make use of the many potentially different mined resources more relevant in the game to make it interesting. The taxicab service Apex was a stroke of absolute genious. It made use of existing code for multicrew, ship re-call, and re-working it for this purpose. I hope I am not giving away secrets as this is all purely speculative observation, but that ingenuity added a clever immersive element to the game. Maybe after the pandemic is over, commanders will be able to share a ride in one of the bigger ships :) - Call it Apex XL or something.... There are many, many ways to expand activity and content in this game I am sure. The list you already have is probably endless.

I like exploring as a pastime, and I very much welcome the efforts toward planetary changes that are in the works.

As far as the on-foot game in settlements, I am quite frustrated. As I have grown older, I just haven't been into shoot 'em up games. I'm sure it sounds pathetic, but as soon as guns are drawn in this game, I am dead in less than a minute. I enjoy attempting the sneaky missions but if alarms are sounded I am dead if I can't run away. If I can fight from inside my SRV, I often stand a chance, but it sounds like this is going to be harder soon with rocket launchers given to the enemy. I DO like the ship combat, but frankly it is because I've engineered my MKII Krait to the hilt and the NPC's don't stand a chance.

The guardian story line is interesting. However.... I did the trip once to obtain a blueprint fragment. It was fun, but once was enough. The idea that one should have to repeat the process umpteen times in order to unlock each module is TEDIOUS and BORING. I started the Ramtah missions, but a couple hours into it, I realized that this too would be very tedious to get through. If you are intelligent enough to enjoy this game, then you can't possibly be interested in repeating the same task over, and over, and over, and over, and over., and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over... well you get the idea.

I've heard a lot of positive things said about SC, and the depth of content such as ship interiors and intricate stations and POIs to name a few. Having said that, the universe they have thus far is small by comparison, and still buggy. Perhaps some of their ideas can be borrowed and integrated into ED for a more rounded experience as time goes on. When you are building a galaxy, there is always more to do for some reason. ;)

Bottom line though, after saying all this, is that I've gotten plenty of enjoyment out of the game. Worth the money spent many times over. The developer efforts are appreciated!!!

Federal-specific issue aside, the Dropship is enormous and would look comically out of place dropping little 6 man fireteams into settlements (some of which would even be dwarfed by, or at least comparable in size with, the dropship itself). Since the CZs often have multiple dropships from both sides active in the area at once, using the FDS just wouldn't work. The FDS looks like it's designed to deploy whole platoons, including armored support. Just wouldn't make sense for the CZs we have now.
Then why not use a ship thats not a space superiority fighter? Like a Keelback, T-6, Adder? Its still crazy you have ground attack in a game that excludes its dedicated ground attack ship. Its almost as if FD forgot its own work, again.

Nice post and I agree and sympathize with it in it's entirety, so sorry for picking out just one bit.

But you are not alone. This is exactly my experience with combat. In my fully engineered Corvette I enjoy bounty hunting or CZ. Otherwise I am toast if I can't get to the "4...3...2...1...engage" part before blowing up.

Just got pre-engineered T3 stuff from the bubble and still have to try if that's enough to act as godmode in settlements :p

Great news! Its really good to see some major issues getting more and more fixes. Game already perfectly playable, I am getting 60 FPS in my old 1050TI after Patch 5 with AMD upscaling tech, so see more optimization being implemented is great.

Mission Feature Extensions
We will be expanding mission features for Odyssey with the aim to increase mission diversity and also create stronger links between the in-cockpit and on foot game.

I know I probably missinterpret that, however to have new mission type, where I would have to do something in space, like in orbit, and then land my ship and do stuff on the ground would be amazing. Or otherwise, kill some bad guys on the ground, and then main bad guy jumps in a ship and flies away, so I would have to get in my ship and catch up with him, this would be such great additions. Tho this missions would have to pay much more, of course :3 I have Courier, Krait MK II and Cutter fully ready for this type of multilayer missions

Also, can we have inquisitor weapon skin added to other plasma weapons? I absolutely love it on my Intimidator.

I guess they could have picked planets with no tiling on for screenshot and then people would have moaned when tiling was still present.

Its all progress. They said the tiling is a bigger issue so hopefully it will be fixed further down the road.
