Development Update 4 - September

So... just to confirm... you think its insulting that the art asset creators, modellers, mission & gameplay team, audio team etc etc are continuing to work on releasing stuff that you are not interested in (plus that will therefore also appear on the console by default)? They should with-hold it for what? Your perverse moral reasons? How about the small fact that there is actually a consumer release out there that also needs to be nutured beyond patching (like it would have been anyway) to maintain sales, franchise positive media and customer goodwill etc. The logic failure you have and 8 others, is you do not point out how any of it will impact the optimisation work required for the Console release.
I’d quite like the new SRV, actually.

None of us know the skills sets of individual workers within FDev.

I do know that if new SRVs are being tested then other stuff isn’t being tested. So from a testing resource perspective alone, producing more content will slow down how fast and/or how throughly bug fixes and improvements can be tested.

We also know that FDev have a tendency to break things that aren’t even related to the release. So expanding multi-crew to support additional players on top of an already broken code base will absolutely increase the number of bugs and/or performance issues that need to then be fixed before the console release can be started.

To all the PC players who don’t understand the console players’ position. Consider this:

Update 8 goes live. FDev make an announcement:

Now that we consider EDO stable, we will start focusing on the console ports. This will likely be a lengthy process and in order for us to achieve it, development of new content (including the new SRV and Fleet Carrier interiors) and other features for PC will have to be placed on-hold. At this time we cannot give you a date for how long that will be.

We are further aware of new graphics cards available for PCs that support advanced ray-tracing and graphics rendering features but we have no plans to support them.

Happy?
I don't needlessly worry about pessimistic & unlikely hypotheticals, because it doesn't seem like a fun thing to do "let's dream of things that will make us unhappy".

If that happens (I have my doubts that ud 8 will be enough), I would be quite happy with such an announcement, actually.

Yes, seven major and several minor updates with that goal in mind. That rather bumpy road is a separate issue, but they are doing the work.
Only one of those updates was console-related. The rest is an attempt to optimize Odyssey on PC, nothing about preparation on ever bringing it to console. As Braben said, which so many PC folks like to point out, their goal is to get it stable on PC, THEN overlay a console roadmap. If that roadmap doesn't work from either a technical or financial standpoint, then it's a dead end. Nothing they're telling us, which is also nothing, leads us to believe any of these updates are done with an eventual goal of porting it to consoles. They will consider consoles after they like where they are with PC. For now, consoles are abandoned.

Optimisations and bug fixes on PC will be brought over to console - FDev have clearly stated this too during livestreams.

Indeed, it's probably the same wall that has the sign "Console ports are on hold until FDev feel that PC Odyssey is in the right state."
No one is disputing that.

it’s what “right state” should mean.

I (and a number of other predominantly console players) think it should mean “content as at release with performance and stability issues resolved” …

FDev and a number of PC players seem to think it should mean “plus develop some extra content not available on Horizons - screw the console players!”

Good grief. Every bit of optimization on PC is working towards a console release. Most of Odyssey's problems have nothing to do with the hardware and very much to do with sub-optimal algorithms and poor resource management, plus just a pile of bugs in general. That is to say, fixing that will make it very much easier to get Odyssey working on consoles. Thus every release is indeed working towards a console release.

I guess I missed those. Even on the stream yesterday the only console news was that this update would not be for console and we have no news regarding consoles. Still sticking with "Abandoned" until they SHOW us, not talk about, different.

I feel like you’re trying to be clever … and yet, I fear, you missed my point.

Ah well, empathy is just lost on some people.

Hahahaha 😂

I think the actual situation is: "performance and stability issues resolved, with any extra content we can simultaneously add during the interim".

Agree to disagree
