Development Update 4 - September

By
It is a bit of a 'mess' - so no surprise!

From my approach, it makes sense that Frontier are introducing the content that was noted in its absence on release of Odyssey - bear with me, I know your own arguments, but:

Update 7: Lighting is considered complete - but vote over specific issues on the tracker... OK...
We were informed that Update 8 should see 'significant improvements' on performance - now talking about Update 9 or 10 as being likely to do so.
Suddenly lighting is reintroduced as part of the 'significant improvement' schedule... Do you see where we are going?

As there doesn't appear to be any 'significant' progress in getting to the bottom of the performance issues, getting the DLC feature complete (with new & exciting bugs, for sure) makes some sense as until the performance bottleneck is correctly recognised and 'significant progress' made in rectifying it, the 'additional' stuff, which very likely already had the hooks in place in the code, just never made it in time, is unlikely to further delay optimisation, just because, today, it appears there is no firm direction to head in.

At least, assuming success in the forseeable future, when the conversion to consoles goes ahead it would be with all of the content intended at initial release, and hopefully providing a stable expansion, rather than another year of 'updates' with the inevitable failures and frustrations that accompany it.

My take on the situation, different than your own, for sure, but hopefully explaining why I have been commenting in this thread.
Makes perfect sense - and I think it’s clear we’re both hoping for the same eventual outcome: namely a properly performing, fully featured DLC for all Elite players and - as you say - preferably without (another?) year of patch after patch with no clear end in sight!

I guess we all now just wait for U8 onwards to see where things end up?!

Greetings Commanders,

As we reach the end of another month, we are delighted to share the latest development progress from the team.

1. FPS performance in Odyssey

With the bulk of our navmesh optimisations now in place with Update 7, alongside a number of other changes, our code team is now looking at further optimisations with an immediate focus on lighting, slated for release in Update 8. Further work is also underway for Update 9.

2. Anti-Aliasing on Foot

In Update 7 we improved anti-aliasing on planetary terrain in close-up. Further improvements will arrive in Update 8 and we will be looking at other areas for improvement in future updates.

3. FPS stuttering at on-foot settlements, apparent after Update 5

We have identified further improvements to the navmesh to be made in Update 8 which we believe will substantially improve instances of stuttering upon disembarking at a settlement.

Hello Dev team,

I appreciate all the effort to fix bugs and to add nice new features like the new SRV and social spaces on megaships and ESCPECIALLY on FLEET CARRIERS.
But please if you add this to FLEET CARRIERS please please please do it in a way that we can see the jump sequence ... and additional - it would be really nice to have a log and info on which commanders are on a FC!

But the elephant in the room for me is the really LOW FPS performance in PLANET WAR ZONES. I didnt see a substantial change for the better - and we have UPDATE 7!
I dont expect to have 120fps..... but even in good times my system dont get over 45fps. And yesterday in 7.01 I did try 2 different War zones on 1 planet, and experienced heavy drops to 10-20fps very often - NOT only when I join the war zone, but repeatedly through the fight again and again and again. It would be playable (not good - but playable) if I had 35-50 fps constantly, but this regular drops for 10-20 seconds to 10-20fps are destroying the experience.
What is stated about NAVMESH improvements is not telling me anything about what fps performance improvements are expected.... 1%, 10%, 20% 40% ????.... What is expected to achieve? Because if it is 1 or 10%, it will note make the needed difference! If I rule out the drops of 10-20 fps (lets say the DEVs find the cause and corrects this) I will have max. 40fps as average. To get 60fps avarage I need and improvement of 50%! I understand that that's not a small task....
Its really time to focus on getting the FPS part in WAR zones to a level that is basically STANDARD in games - to have at least 60fps without any major drops! Of cause performance is depending on hardware, but many reports show that the current values are consisten low even on absolute top notch PC's with 8/16 core CPU and RTX3090.
I can report that on my PC it doesnt help to lower the GFX settings or to reduce the resolution..... it make very little difference. It reduces mainly the USAGE of CPU/GPU.

It is not a main problem for FD.

After 7 Updates and no statement for concrete performance improvements in further updates... this is obviously.

Nice to read. Nice to see that you are working on it. Nice to read and see the new community communication (this developer streams must be more). Nice to see that something is done to Powerplay (which is some kind of Endgame - also it must evolve more to be a legit MMO endgame). I really appreciate that! I also trust you that ED:O will become playable. I also think, ED can be/is the best game ever.

But I want to play it and it is not possible to play fluid with my setup. So there is that.

Okay, having just bought Elite Dangerous on Friday morning, I hope I am not about to any of the long time players off here, so let me start by saying I love the game. Here is my complaint, frustration, and Anger.

I am new at this game, and my hats off to the community of players on Elite Horizons. I started Streaming the first day of game play as I learned how to play the game, and I am still learning. With that being said, here are some things that do bother me as a new player on Elite.

I am sure the More experienced players are used to this, but to new players it is extremely frustrating. One is the Pilot Federation Area, I had run maybe three or four (I don't remember the exact number) of the missions in the area, then seen a mission paying 100,000 creds for exploring. I took it, and immediately was locked out of the Pilot Federation Area. so a large number of planets are now off limits because I lost my Permit for the area. Now I by no means did I feel I was ready to be thrown out of the nest so to speak, but this was not the first time I felt this way about a game. Several of my Stream viewers guided me, and I began to learn.....

Now, I did several different things in game, tried Mining, (not a fan, better ways to grind) Mainly i did courier missions and small deliveries, upgraded my ship at the suggestions of my viewers, and slowly got better. I even landed in Jail for not realizing a mission was illegal. thought that was funny,. This bring me in to last night when i made enough money to buy my Third ship. I have been enjoying the cargo runs, and started Sourcing missions . So last night the last thing i did was Buy the type 6 transporter. (love the ship) Now comes the issues....

So Today i start my game play, the first mission i take, i am interdicted by a NPC and almost immediately blown up. Good thing my Viewers told me to make sure I had enough for the insurance... So, not only did i get blown up, but i lost my cargo, i still had the mission, but the cargo I had recieved was gone, so I sourced some close by and tried to finish the mission. Well No that didnt happen, i couldnt use the coffee procured else where, and wound up abandoning the misson, couse i didnt know what else to do, then was fined, and my rep dropped, but hey it is all part of the game right...

Then I play some more, I want to make my rep with that System Stellar, so i get several source and return missions and head out to fill my cargo hold. So i fill it up with the cargo they need, dodge three interdictions, while trying to fly tot he station, and then i get a landing platform, i could not find right away, trying to find it i got between two platforms (it was just inside the station so i didnt see it coming in) as i am trying to figure out which way to go and where my platform is, i get two verbal warnings and my ship is blown up and am thrown in jail, 64 tons of cargo are blown up, at a cost of about 300k creds to me, and the turn in worth was over a million.

All of this mind you on a closed group server. So I dont know how to find my docking pad, if i can not see it, and finding my parking spot was frusting enough without getting my ship and cargo blown up while i figured it out. I guess what i am saying is this, Clear Training missions, ones that cover the cockpit read outs? Maybe a more forgiving, or at leasttake blow up the cargo ship full of needed supplies off the table for a space station. hey would have gladly paid a fine, would have been happy to.... lossing all that cargo, my ship the jail time, and frustration after spending a couple hours sourcing, running delivering, and trying to locate and find everything only to lose it in the station i am delivering too, I almost deleted the game....

I will continue to play the game, but after avoiding three different back to back interdictions from from NPC's just to have the station blow up my ship.... I was ready to scream, and did..... loudly. I am sure a couple of my streamers will be sending me bills for hearing damage... lol

Now that i am done venting, my suggestion maybe make it the game more user friendly so new players don't drop the game form frustration...

Welcome to the Elite Universe!

However, I have to say, this is probably a subject for a different thread.

What about VR????

Well, my first instinct was to go with a passive-aggressive comment but I'd then have to pay Factab royalties :D
These VR questions get filed in the same bucket as "Odyssey on console" for me - VR on EDO has been 'completed' for the forseeable future, with perhaps an odd fix or two over the course of time... Consoles... Well, we all know what has been said.

If you share it as a clip then the VR peeps can watch it on a constant loop

We should really do one for the Consolistas as well - save Sally a bunch of time :)

Edit: Really Leo - Passive Aggressive moi? ;)

I presume the thinking (if it can be called that) is that if they keep asking then Frontiers answer might change.

IF Frontier have news about VR/Console release it won't be revealed by Sally in a random comment response or in Supercruise News it'll be revealed in an official post.

Well, not quite the same bucket - VR has a definite known answer - it is done apart from bug fixes.
Consoles is the opposite - it isn't started - not even adding the bugs.

The difference is that eventually the consoles crew should go away (if EDO releases on consoles). The VR one will drag on like a 32 button inputs bug ... or maybe even worse :)

True enough, I suppose - consoles will be dealt with in one way or another in the forseeable future 🤷‍♂️

Watching the stream recording last night, late, as I'd been playing in Odyssey for a few hours (that should grind someone's gears here - as it is allegedly unplayable) in both space and ground CZs... The same person was posting the same question about VR repeatedly, it did finally get the expected response. (as did the same repeated questions over consoles - that got the silence expected.)
