Newcomer / Intro Difficulty setting?

I am completely useless in FPS or any other sort of real time game. The only way I can have any fun at such games is to tone the difficulty settings way down. I have just today discovered that Elite Dangerous which I was intending to buy, because I love playing in a sandbox and love the idea of exploring the galaxy, no longer is to be playable offline.

I have no (serious) objections to having to log onto a server in order to play, but it does rear the prospect that I will no longer be able to set my own difficulty setting, that I will be forced to play with whatever difficulty has been set for the whole world to play at. My question is, is that still possible (if it ever was)?

Note that I am perfectly content to play without ever meeting a single other player. I am perfectly happy to be locked out of playing with other players if I set an easy mode. I am not seeking to gain an easy advantage over other players. I just want to play, and I cannot play if I can't set an easy mode or something.

Play solo to avoid other players and stick to safer systems for an easier time. There's no difficulty setting in Elite but you can make choices that alter the level of risk you expose yourself to

There are no difficulty settings, it's the same for everyone. Of course I cannot tell you if what we have will be too difficult for you, but I can tell you that with some practice and knowledge you can pretty much escape all "hairy" situations with NPCs relatively unscathed. The first ship you get is free, so no matter how often you smash it into pieces it will always be there for you. Be prepared for a bit of a learning curve, though. There is a solo mode, so if you don't want to you never have to see another human players, but you also have the option to play in groups or in the open-for-all-and-anything open mode.

There is a solo mode but there are no difficulty settings. There is also a very big learning curve since there's no real manual. The best sources for how to play the game are these forums and good old You tube.

Correction: There -is- a manual, you can download it from the ED launcher.

Thank you for the responses. I am still not sure if I should risk it. A followup question might seal the deal.

I am perusing the Wiki and as far as I can tell from what the Wiki seems to imply, is that fixed weapons need to be manually aimed by the pilot. However it also states; "Turrets are fully independent auto-firing weapons". Does this mean that I could install only turrets on my ship and in the event of a fight, just fly erratic evasive while my automatic turrets will fire on my attacker? If that is the case, I could probably live with no easy mode, as my biggest problem is being able to actually aim effectively in real time games.

There are turreted weapons which can autonomously engage targets, but they are not without problems as they can and will attack targets you might actually not want to. There are also gimballed weapons which require you to just aim in the general direction of your target to get a lock on it, so you don't have to have pinpoint accuracy to be good at combat.

Also keep in mind that turreted weapons do far less damage, and are far less effective at managing energy. OP, in the interest of your wallet, either play the game and try to get better (it wasnt easy for me at first to shoot straight either, but it gets better), or dont get it. Its an expensive "maybe".

Also... turrets are expensive, and are not available to starter ships.... not that I have seen, anyhow.
