Horizons disabling auto exposure when approaching a planet's surface dark side

Greetings,
When you approach planet's dark side you can see the auto exposure boosting the brightness of the surface in a few clearly visible steps. There shouldn't be this much light if there's no moon to bounce the star's light off of.
It's a shame this happens because I quite liked driving in the dark during the Horizons Beta (probably because of a bug). Landing and hunting for POI's would be a lot more interesting/dangerous.

Does anyone know if it's possible to edit the config files to prevent this?

Not currently, no. But I believe devs are still tweaking it with every update, so it might get better. One of the major sources of light on the night side is the milky way itself (the core). You can notice that when the night side faces the core, it's much brighter. I think this effect is, even IRL stronger when there isn't any atmospheric scattering present. But I agree that it is still a bit overdone.
Also, there are places where you can drive in a complete dark. If you are in the fringes of the galaxy and the night side of the planet faces outwards, there isn't any ambient lighting present. There are also several black nebulae, that block the galaxy light if you're inside and the planets there are completely dark at night. But to be honest, you'd find out that driving around for any longer period of time is actually quite annoying, especially in harder terrain.

Just pretend it is your HUD amplifying the light ala night vision goggles. [wink]

That's what I do. Since all of the targeting reticules, orbit lines and other HUD stuff is drawn by the ships computer directly onto the cockpit windows, it makes sense that it would have a built in light amplification system as well.

Would be nice if there was an option to turn it off though.

That's what I do, too.
After all, when we are staring at the sun from 0.2ls away, it's hard to believe the glass DOESN'T have some sort of shades and filters, right? (Any Sunshine fans?)

The cockpit canopy must be photo sensitive or you'd go blind every time you dropped out of witch space pointing at a star, it "obviously" has the ability to alter its transparency in separate areas, on the fly in order to protect your eyes.
