Disappointed

Ye right....Thats another one !! :D
At least that one was capable of making a noise of some kind :)

Sadly, it was the sound of a Kookaburra, not an actual dolphin. Real dolphins make clicking buzzing noises and high pitched screeching noises. Flipper was a lie. Still, it wasn't as annoying as Gentle Ben though. That kid in it really got on my nerves.

The 'annoying kid' was played by Clint Howard who's Ron Howard's brother. CH went on to play, appropriately enough, Sy Liebergot in Apollo 13.....

If the subject of this thread is "Disappointed", I'd like to weigh in with my comments.

There was a time when talk of a fourth Elite game was hounded down with the fact that it was vapourware, it would never happen. I found this forum, and it was a quiet place. There were some, who like me, clung to the hope of a new Elite game, but the forum was quiet, and a close community developed among those who lurked here.

There was not much to talk about. Every now and then there would be some new rumour, often due to David Braben being interviewed, and the inevitable question : "Will there be a fourth Elite?", to which David always skillfully evaded a direct answer. Getting any information from Frontier Developments either on this forum, or off of it, was impossible. Even when "The Outsider" was cancelled, still Frontier kept quiet, that was when some started to lose faith in there ever being a fourth Elite.

Then suddenly, David Walsh announced the Kickstarter project to raise funding for a fourth Elite game, I was lucky enough to be looking on this forum when that post came in. I quickly pledged some money. All our hopes had been answered, there would be a fourth Elite game, but success of the Kickstarter was not guaranteed.

Soon, many many people pledged their money to the Kickstarter, and I began to wonder "where were all of you during those years we lurked on this forum?, during those years we were laughed at for having the belief a fourth Elite would one day happen?" but all that was forgotten, we were a community again, and were we growing in numbers. This forum went from a dozen members to hundreds.

The Kickstarter ended and a fourth Elite was now a reality and Frontier realised that this forum would now need to change, the greater numbers of active members required new sections to accommodate the game and moderators. I have to say at this point, I do not agree with all the choices that were made for who the new moderators are. There is one in particular I strongly disagree with and should not be a moderator, and I am not afraid to state my opinions on this, even if it resulted in being banned. However, I do know from the experience I have with other forums, and running my own forum, that it is very bad forum etiquette to discuss this, so I will keep my opinions on this forum's moderators to myself ... for now.

I am also not happy with what I have seen on this forum. It is true, we have been relatively troll free, compared to how bad it could have been, but I honestly think that most of the threads that have been started were unnecessary and a waste of time, so much so, that one of the moderators put up a locked sticky thread asking people to look at what has already been posted before creating new threads. There were days when you would post in a thread or create a new one and in an hour it was on page 2. Nobody looks at the threads on page 2. That has calmed down now, but still threads are being created that have no need to exist.

The community I knew has gone and I am not comfortable with the community we have now, so much so that I don't want to be a part of it any more. I am seriously considering playing on my own when the fourth Elite is released.

So there, I've said it now. This thread is about "Disappointed", and I am.
Sometimes I wish the Kickstarter had never happened and we were still here hoping that one day a fourth Elite would happen.

Hi Alien. I feel the sadness in your post. You are a well-respected forum member, both by us old-timers on the forum, and the newcomers who respect all you did for the Kickstarter campaign. Like you, I have been afflicted by pangs of nostalgia for the tight-knit community that was built up over the years. However, it was always going to grow when E4 happened; the pace is a little dizzying, but the newcomers are real fans too, committed, friendly, knowledgeable. Frontier have completely changed in communicating (newcomers probably don'e realise how pre-Kickstarter prising any information from Frontier was like getting blood out of a stone! I'm afraid I upset Michael by making what was meant to be a light-hearted comment on this). Most importantly of all, E4 is actually going to happen, and because it is being funded by fans, will hopefully be the game DB and us fans want, not the dumbed down version a publisher would impose.

So setting my natural Eeyorishness to one side, I say welcome everyone: the forum has become a bigger "us" not an "us and them". Those of us who were there during The Dark Times will always share those memories, but I want to see if E4 can be the game we all want it to be, and welcome the new, lively, large community that has arrived because of Kickstarter.

So, love and peace everyone (looks in vain for Hippie emoticon)

I think the main reason Star citizen has so many funders and updates is that its MUCH further along than Elite. Elite is basically in pre-alpha stages, with very little in game stuff actually done, only enough to get some videos up for kickstarter. Star citizen (from what I saw) is pretty much near beta level detail, enabling them to show off new stuff regularly as they complete it AND post videos. As Elite gets more complete we'll see more and more videos and stuff for sale, but right now I'm guessing their really busy just trying to make the engine work and start designing the basics of the ships, flight suits etc.

no no no
you and i seem to have gotten very different impressions and expectations from their KS pitch
for an established mid-sized? commerical dev studio they probably set a new benchmark for backer involvment
were you expecting a beta release this soon ? they made it quiet clear even an alpha would not be released for about a year in the KS
I'm very happy with the balance they have struck between getting input in the DDF and firewalling their dev staff from a mountain of distraction that a public forum could turn into.
I don't agree with some of it but I trust them and I'm backing them to make THEIR game not MY game.

Hmm.. ?

I think I have to say something here. You know, you really need to stop being so delicate. The reality is, as a game grows/re-grows in popularity the population changes. I found this out the hard way like you are doing now some 10 - 11 years ago in the Eve Online forums pre-alpha. I followed that game from the very beginning "hoping" it was going for be another Elite, time and time again my hopes were dashed and broken on the rocks.

The original forum crowd all began to vanish after the game hit alpha/beta and was actually being made. The Eve forums at that time were full [with friends], RP stories, art work, game ideas etc etc ... yes, just like this place is now. And just like this place all the "old guard" such as you were drowned out by the numbers once as they started to arrive.

Its a reality, it is what "is" going to happen here as well. That is just a fact and a fact that you all will have to face, no matter how uncomfortable you feel about it. Running off to sulk in a corner "lurking" solves nothing. You end up like those before you in the past, you disappear into the woodwork and become nothing. I suggest you don't let that happen.

You know, there is an air of "awe" that is granted to those who stay and forge a name for themselves in a game from the beginning as it unfolds. You end up being respected by the younger pilots that arrive and they see you as being an "Elder". It happened in Eve, and I know this how? I know this because I was one of those within Eve, one who didn't hit the "oh woe is me" button when things began to change. Change is natural, things move, change and flex and if they don't they are dead.

Yes, there will be personalities that annoy you, personalities that come across as being down right obnoxious. [Hell, you might even see me as being one of those] Alien, you are what you are by the deeds and the acts you show to others. If you walk away, you have no more input to change the world here and then become destine to be a nonentity. And for what?

If you feel they are a way to act, to be, simply speak it and let the community know. Some will go against you, some will agree. It is those that you have common ground with you must seek to bond with and make your close friends, forge forwards with. And also guess what? The new pilots arriving here, some of them will hear of your reputation and seek to bond and gel with you and your ilk. They will become you friends, your wing men, your gaming buddies who you will have wild experiences with in the future here. And you will have those "if" you give it a chance and get off the negative band wagon.

The world here will change, just make sure you "old guard" are part of that change. Anyway, its up to you Alien, good luck with what ever you choose.

And p.s. This goes out to "ALL" you so called "old guard" as well, not just Alien here.

I know what you mean when you say a forum has changed, with us lot invading your own personal heaven, everything comes crashing down, but to be bluntly honest you need to stop wallowing in that self pity as we can only try and be nice to you with positive comments for so long, in the 3 months I have been here I've heard you quit the this forum and wallow in more self pity.

all I can say is that you are missing a golden opportunity at becoming something more. you have been here since 2008 and now more than ever we require a hardcore forum member to give us those interesting threads and maybe offer something that none of us have offered so far.

why not start up a thread purely for role players, or create something that only you can offer, because people are only going to put up with self pity for so long.

dear Veterans, I just startet a poll on SC/RSI asking who else did pledge for 'Elite Dangerous'.

If you have the chance give it a YES too and maybe few positive words to advertise 'Elite Dangerous'. Maybe some Spacemen are getting aqcuired that way.

cheers &thanks

The Star Citizen videos were mostly fake....well they were designed using the ingame engine as specific demo pieces to be representative of what the final product will be.

They are still showing the first pieces of concept art in their updates. They aren't at Beta stage ....and their release date is almost a full year after Elite: Dangerous just for the single player campaign portion.

If all goes well we'll be playing Elite: Dangerous in March 2014 and Star Citizen's wider online universe in March 2015.

OK, enough please. I am not wallowing in self pity .... I was, but I'm not now.
I quit the forum? I don't remember quitting the forum itself, maybe I did, I know I quit a few things after the kickstarter, so who knows. As I am still here, then obviously any comment from me about quitting the forum has been forgotten.

Yes I said sometimes I long for how it used to be, but I am getting used to new community. Just because it says "2008" up there, does not rank me higher than someone where it says "March 2013" ... we are all fans of Elite and all support Elite 4.

I welcome you all ... just not used to it being like this.

You know man, I think he gets it. I don't even think it self pity. Its more like frustration [at least that's what I felt when it happened to me.] It just, it can feel like a kick in the teeth when your home seems to fall apart around you. I understand him and feel for him. Going the RP route is fine but it only goes so far, you'll get the majority that will come along and say "I'm not into that mate, don't bother."

Good RP is a fine line of balance between playing along enough to hold with the story and honest enough to know there are going to be times the non-RP lot out there have waaaay too much time on there hands to compete with. You find that balance, RP works in your universe, you don't find it and it gets left in the corner and dies a slow death.

So the trick is to make the RP subtle enough to make it not feel like RP, that way people just do what they do without feeling like they are RPing and automatically play along. It can be done, you just have to be smart about it and have a game that plays into it without hard line cut roles.

Opps... I was a little late with the post there. Alien I didn't see your post reply until I hit sent. ahhh well.

Have I missed something, are we not supposed to be here or not welcome? I've only been here a week or so. I'm happy to go away and just play the game when it comes out.

Actually, I've been 'blanked' by a few people already and feel somewhat like an outsider. not sure what I wanted or expected. So I won't be hanging around any longer. I'll follow the Dev threats.

@Alien
Havent read anything about you leaving or expected you to.....Just though the first gripe on this thread was maybe you had a bad day :)

Cant Happen......Where would the forum be without Alien around ;)

Who said that :D J/K

Are you still using the same name you did on the kickstarter ?
A lot are not.....The kickstarter was very active it was hard to keep up live....

The forum is a hell of a lot slower....Dont think your being ignored....I only come on once a day if im busy as many people do.....

Threads go to the next page quite quickly and just may not be continued
