Newcomer / Intro Discovering Elite Dangerous in 2019...

Discover the space and the beautifull planet with huge rings in front of the station
This is the only place where I saw such planet with rings. Tons of blue, some purple, gray, woody, but not that kind. And I can't get there to have a look because of permit lock.

Thanks again for all your warm welcoming !

We're all at the beginning of this journey. Only 0.036% of of the Galaxy was explored so far.
I feel so unsignificant right now …

I just thought I'd point out to you that your posts got a "Like" from one of the Developers (not me) - nice touch ...
Nice ! I have to behave worthily now ! :)

At this point, I’m still discovering things every time I play, and I was thinking to what I want to do in the game right now.
Actually, I want to show my son (5 years old) that daddy is currently orbiting around the earth, inside his SCS(WL)® (Super cool spaceship (with lasers)®).
And from there, take him to the moon !!!! :)

That will surely increse my rep up to the « Super cool dad » Rank.

So, my first objective is to get to Sol system.

In order to get the Sol permit, as I travel towards Sol, I’m taking Federation missions, focusins on (slowly) building my rep.
I think I’m almost good to go as I upgrade to rank 3. (No rank > Recrue > Cadet > Matelot) ang 56% to the next Rank.
It took me 3 gameplay sessions, and it was great fun so far !

During the process I did earn my first million creds, I learn how to scan entire systems with the scanning tool (FSS I believe), start to use the market interface and the « compare » function to make (small) profits.
Also I accidentaly did pick up some illegal missions, it was just about get and bring back some black boxes from specific unknowns signals sources, but I get chased by bounty hunters (or autorities ?)
I did manage either to avoid the interdiction, escape by super cruising out of the fight, and even fight back and win (with help from an unknown ship) ! They didn’t kill me (yet) YEAH !!
I got a friend, but I did find how to speak with him... Also I did try and fail to mine asteroids, and didnt do any fighting missions.

… aaaaaaand I must confess I did manage to put myself in a position where I got destroyed AND thrown into jail, a bit off my route. But IT WAS ONLY A LITTLE MISUNDERSTANDING ! not my fault ! Actually totally my fault but NOT IN PURPOSE.
I’ll tell you what happen next time.

All in all, it was very great and very entertaining.
I’m still having my daily Blast so everything is fine.

By the way, currently I cruise into a Cobra mkIII (chosen because the saleman said it was polyvalent). I upgraded the weapons a little, the energy generator, the engine, and the carrying capacity (36T currenty).

141543

Nothing to brag about, but hey, it’s my first ship, and it gets the job done ! :)

See you in space Commanders

Welcome to the glorious galaxy of Elite: Dangerous commander - oh boy, you are in for such an amazing time! I'm well into my 5th year of playing this game every day pretty much and I still adore every minute. Tip? Avoid the grind, concentrate on having fun. Stop to smell the roses at every opportunity! This game should be around as long as you want so there's no rush to do anything (except for winning a Buckyball Race maybe).

Get involved with a group is also fun as it means more friends around to guide you, I believe there is a link to a selection of the in game player factions on one of the other forum groups.. on my phone at mo so can’t go find the link, i’m Sure someone will!

Just a quick hello to share my yesterday night session ! It was quite glorious as I finally get the Sol permit !!

Shoot lasers into space to celebrate, visit Earth, fail to see my actual house, fly to the moon (with kid), fail to land in moon, get to Jupiter, admire, have fun flying into the ring, get into nearby station, buy SRV module, buy SRV, head to first landable moon, get into SRV, PROFIT !!!, get lost and unable to track back to the SCS(WL)®, « ho no, is it going to end like this ? », find the « call ship » commande, everything ‘s fine again.

I’m a bit disapointed that most of the Sol main bodies are not landable, but all in all, it was really another great session !
I’ll explore Sol a little bit more, and then I’ll need to find myself some new objective.

Some time ago, I received a message from a woman. She said she noticed what I was doing and I should pay her a visit. (she’s on my map, purple dot) Maybe I’ll do this ?
I should also try to find some friend to do things together. Currently I don’t have a clue how it is working but I’ll investigate.

Try heading out to visit Voyager, its really easy now (AFAIK), even if it takes a while. Proper Future History.

This ^^^

Speaking of which, as a suggestion if you're looking for some nonsense to do follow the Seven Sisters Speedway link in Alec's signature. Buckyballers are a lovely bunch of people and it'll introduce you one of the many ways people have fun in this game after 5 years.

The purple dot is an Engineer called Felicity Farseer (there are many others) who can upgrade your FSD, thrusters and a few other things. You need to provide 1t of meta-alloy to her, which you can get in the area where the Seven Sisters Speedway takes place. You can see where I'm going with this ;)

Good luck o7

Thanks for all your messages, such a great welcoming is very nice !

This.
Among everything ED has to offer, i’m still totally blasted by the scale of the game.

Let me tell you how I discovered the scale of the game :

Step 1.
Found the map > did check Dormi, Matet, and the other starting systems. "Wow, seems there is many other systems around."
Ok let’s go really far : I did move the cursor straight up on the map for maybe 30 seconds, 30 more…
Let’s click here and set a route to a random system. It takes like 30 jumps to go there, it’s HUGE !!!
I couldn’t believe what I discovered ! The game is so vast : it must have at least 200 systems.

Step 2.
Later, I found out you can dezoom the map and get a view of, ladies and gentlemen, nothing less than THE F**ING ENTIRE GALAXY.
SPEECHLESSNESS INTENSIFIES.
OK now it’s really huge, there is sectors, etc.
The « very long » route I set earlier, was nothing but a tiny tiny spot.
I can go very far away and there still are systems there. How is that even possible ?
There should be millions stars out there.

Step 3.
Further later, I discover there is a Z axis. And it’s jut vast.
SPEECHLESSNESS INTENSIFIES by a z factor.
And just like that, space gets multiplied by a third dimension. Everything is even more huger than huge.

And only then I look the forums and found out the numbers : 900 Billions systems.
(Actually I cannot even picture such a big number)

Elite Dangerous : Get a glimpse of your size in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks for all your messages and advices.

I finally made it to Felicity Farseer, while aally taking my time, having fun, on the way !
With my son, I like to land on planet and explore with the SRV.
Found some random materials, and some "drones". He was impressed by the drones so we turn the SRV lights off, stayed away and check them with the camera view, call the ship and escape. More investigation next time ! :)

Regarding engenerriig, it seems the game doesn't want to give any hint regarding how to get her that "meta alloy" she wants : I did search a little bit for some info in game and did not manage to find anything.
I don't even know if it's something I have to mine ? to collect on a planet ? to buy ? where to look ?
I could look on the internet and here on the forums (and I surely will and find out exactly what to do) but I would have love the game to give some hints or general directions about things, so I could search and find by myself.
Anyway...

Next direction is probably this :

I beleive there IS mention of MA somewhere in the Codex, either in relation to Thargoids, or more likely Barnacles, but it IS only a passing mention, and pretty hard to find without any sort of clue except by a full scan of everything.

Easiest way is to use https://eddb.io/trade/commodity to find the 1 and only place that sells them.
They are present at Barnacle sites (see Codex), but they have just started to dry up, so even that may not be enough information, but is at least in-game.
Harder "proper" way is to scan planets in the Pleiades region looking for Biological sites, and crossing your fingers that it is a live Barnacle. If you think thats hard, we used to have to do that without any DSS, just scouring planets with Mark 1 Eyeball.

In-game clues on meta alloys are hard to come by indeed. But here's a tip: meta alloys are listed on the commodities market in many systems. If you select them there is a description on the right of the screen. Don't expect a complete answer. Also The Codex might shed some light.

Keep checking Galnet the ongoing Interstellar Initiative is related to Meta Alloys so there maybe some clues there and if you can find an archive there should be more information.

Welcome to the game! There's nothing else like it.

Don't fly without a rebuy (gotta say that to every newcomer, y'know).

Enjoy the journey, you're only new once!

Thank you guys for the meta alloys tips !

Good advice !

Yesterday when i logged, I was still in the system were the 1rst engeeneer is, orbiting a random planet, juste where I left the day before.
I activated supercruise and some ship immediately put me out of Supercruise and destroy me.
I did not manage to avoid being forced to normal Cruise (normally I manage to avoid), and then the "fight" was really fast (normally it takes longer)
There is really nothing I could do, as the killer was obviously more experimented, driving a much better ship with better weapons.

It seems to me it was just a random (over)kill, not even a fight. I wonder why he did destroy me...
Does he get any kind of reward for doing this ? I wasn't carying anything, neither had a bounty on my head...

It is I believe much simpler to pull someone out of cruise when they are going slowly either at the start or end of the trip. NPCs are much easier to shake off than commanders.

Unless you were doing Power Play no there would be no in game reward.

Undoubtedly his reward would be looking gud on utoob.

There tends to be a higher proportion of players who like such unbalanced combat at locations like the early engineering bases and non combat Community Goal sites where they believe they can find more victims this unfortunate aspect of Open is rare to nonexistent most places because most of the time you won’t see many commanders we are thin on the ground compared to possible locations even just counting inhabited systems.
