A wipe to be fair to new gamers makes no long term sense so no.

Being fair to noobs is an important concept though. Will it be possible for ranked players to gank noobs?

There's always gonna be someone in a better ship with more experience. I'd hope that when we scan a player in future we can see their combat rating.

If I saw someone ranked as harmless/mostly harmless I wouldn't attack them and ive already made a suggestion in the DDF re how doing this should be handled.

Ultimately, we have to set a real time to start the game proper.. ;)

My thoughts are, if we want people to join the multiplayer and want to stay, we need to level the playing field at the beginning. Starting with Anacondas and pirating all the new Sidewinders on launch day/week would probably lead to some rage quitting and hamper the growth of the game community, which seems like it's what we're all going for, right?

Maybe we should have a wipe every month to keep any new purchasers of the game happy.

From what I have read and from what I understand from other games and the usual.

During Beta you will have "soft" resets, that is, you lose all your stuff but keep your CR. At the end of Beta when you launch into "Gamma" (also known as Pre-Release) that there is a hard reset, a full state wipe, everything. After that, there would be no more hard resets, maybe a soft one depending if people find exploits (and use them, there is a difference).

To be honest I haven't played much since the last wipe, don't want to get bored with the grind before the gamma comes out. Hoping that there won't be a wipe after that point.

Will probably start again soon and leave the kerbal population to increase before I start wiping them out / stranding them on distant moons again....

No - providing that there are no game-play reason why there should be.

Reason - it produces a more interesting universe, having players at various stages of advancement. It also gives the game some player history, rather than being totally reliant on whatever the background simulation conjures up.

Mainly, because it'll mitigate the glut of new ships in starting areas, having some of the extant population already faring in the galaxy makes it that much easier for new players to get to grips in the relative safety of local systems. For those that fear an all powerful group of experienced players in their tooled up Anacondas wrecking havoc on the new intake, it's more likely to be an issue if you intermingle those experienced ED vets with new players in an equal start situation. Not wiping post gamma means that the vets will have bigger fish to fry.

I voted "No" because, as I understand it, the Gamma is the point where the Galaxy opens up and we can start exploring. Which means, telling our own stories, developing a real history in the Elite universe. Or for the PvP-oriented players, it means building up (or tearing down) their reputation, working out faction alliances and so on, which is another form of personal story to develop.

If there is a wipe/reset after Gamma, I won't ragequit the game if it still looks promising. And I understand the technical reasons why it might happen. But it means I won't follow the same exploration path I went down before, because I've seen that content already. The same might happen with faction quest lines. I don't buy into Early Access on story-driven games like RPG's for the same reason. Who wants to repeat what they've already seen, or know about?

Right now the content is so limited in the Beta that it won't feel like losing any personal history. There just isn't much of a way to develop that in the limited sandbox other than racking up kills or credits, and I don't think that's the main attraction of the game. That will change with unknown systems to explore, faction quests, a reputation system, and all the rest.

So that's why I hope FD can avoid it.

As I mentioned in my second post, I clearly misunderstood what the gamma was. It's pretty clear to me now that it's a soft release, and that barring some huge glitch it would be silly to wipe at the end of gamma.

Why would this be relevant while they already announced that there will most likely be no wipe in gamma? Asking for a wipe every 6 months sounds the same to me. At some point you have to stop.

Really surprised at the poll results so far.

Gamma to me is the full game released early for backers as both a thank you and to give them time to release necessary patches and fix up remaining issues while dealing with a smaller and more understanding ( :) ) player base.

But it is supposed to the full game and so I don't think there should be anymore wipes once we're in gamma phase.

When is the next wipe planned?

I'm pretty time-poor at the moment, and I can't give much time to playing, but I've just bought a Hauler (love the interior - like a Ford Transit), and I'm progressing slowly.

When's the next wipe due? Before the release?

there will be a wipe at the end of beta so everyone starts fresh for gamma, no idea when that will be though as there is still a heck of a lot to add to the game (nearly 400 billion stars for starter!)

FDev are going to try not to wipe during gamma but nothing is set in stone, if a major exploit is found then it becomes a mandatory wipe situation

Thanks Andy. I'd assumed that gamma would be the 30th Anniversary, next month. I think it'd make a more interesting release if there are players at different levels of progress, rather than wipe everyone to the same level. It might not be technically possible to release without a wipe though.

most likely gamma will be in november and retail release in december, i just can't see them to make gamma in a month, wont happen, but if they will manage that i will be only even more happy that i was wrong.

but from what i have seen and read the developers always say Q4 and every single time have been asked about 30th anniversary just correctly push away the question saying that more likely no.

that doesn't mean that there will not be big BANG on 20th September, like 10m credits for everyone to play and celebrate Elite's birthday before final wipe ;)
