Distant Worlds 3 - A Decade of Exploration and a New Journey?

Plan for DW3 being the biggest DW ever:

Fleet Carriers mean that not everyone needs to keep to a schedule and constantly put in a lot of hours to keep up with the expedition; you can park your ship in an expedition Fleet Carrier and automatically be along for the ride even knowing you'll have no time to play that week. This makes DW3 far far more accessible to far more people. Once word spreads that eg. 30 minutes a week is enough to be part of it, a lot of people are going to take part that would never be able to consider a DW before.

This larger fleet involving more players with less time is a "demographics" difference from previous DW that should probably be taken into account when figuring out the nature of DW3

As long as they remember to still carry a fuel scoop just in case the carrier they are on jumps while they are not docked!

Still, should be easy enough to find a new one with how many will be going along i imagine.

While personal play style issues around not having (or particularly wanting) an alt in combination with fomo on racing events and other bubble centric activities mean I probably wouldn’t go (unless my todo list really has dried up by then), it's great to see so much enthusiasm for this and I wish it well. I do think it's impossible to recreate the sense of genuine exploration and challenge re: heading off into uncharted territories that came with the first DW1, time and increased jump ranges have made the entire galaxy a far more familiar and easier to traverse place these days. But what the DW events can still offer is that sense of being part of something huge with regular opportunities to join in with large scale community events spanning all time zones. That means meet ups, organised games, screenshot competitions, newsletters collating commander submitted articles, etc. On which, a few thoughts … perhaps there could be a tie-in with JustAbout.com offering DW3 specific cash rewards for such things, perhaps elitedangereuse.fr could author a series of DW3 specific adventures, and perhaps someone (sadly probably not me) could create EDCoPilot race time trials for people to take part in along the way?

Not playing Elite much anymore because I don't like the Thargoid-centered content but DW3 would definitely be a reason to play again! I participated in DW2 and it was a fantastic experience. So count me in.

I really hope the carrier problem can be solved somehow. Would definitely hate it to constantly encounter carriers with their annoying usually unimmersive and unimaginative names... But I guess there is not much you can do about that except creating a new player group dedicated to the DW3 expedition with explicit rules defining that unauthorized Carriers are forbidden and banning players who violate the rule.

EDIT: Just realized that a dedicated player group doesn't help either because carriers are global. So carriers following DW3 outside the player group are still visible and can't be banned... Too bad there is no game feature to filter out all carriers completely except whitelisted ones... There are simply too many carriers in the galaxy, really annoying.

The "Thargoid-centered content" is pretty much over with for the foreseeable future now the war is ended. It's all about Power Play 2.0 now and soon player driven system colonisation.

Before I start, congratulations to those of you who organised DW 2, which is the one I took part in. I still have my Anaconda with the original ID I had for DW2. And I proudly wear my DW2 decal on all my ships.

I am going to speak frankly. I didn't participate in DW 1 because it didn't offer anything interesting other than exploring with other commanders.
I participated in DW 2 because it was semi-official. That is, Frontier backed it up with the construction of the base near Sagittarius A and a decal. And with the Lore that we had, the community goal, etc.
That's what would make it interesting to make another DW and get people involved. Because, let's be honest, exploring without having some Lore and/or leaving our mark on the game like we did in DW2 I don't think it would be interesting enough, at least for me, to participate. Because we have another problem and that is that going on such a long journey you risk Frontier to put new content/Lore and we would be in trouble because for sure many would abandon the expedition.
Although I don't rule out participating if there is nothing interesting to do in the bubble by then.

And remember... The Space is dark and full terror.

I've been looking for a reason to go exploring and DW3 would be great!
I started playing after DW2, but heard great things about it.
I would hope that FDev will be willing to throw in some extra support for it as well, to make it a unique experience for exploration.
Just think of all the Raxxlas' we'll potentially find! :p

Yep, lets hope people respect the request not to take their own along. DW3 have said they'll provide their own carriers, so hopefully people will use these instead of their own.
The main problem with them is if there's a lot of them in the same place they can cause lag spikes and server issues when they're all trying to initiate jumps. There's also the problem that systems can't have too many carriers in them as that causes problems too, even if they're static and not going anywhere.

Thankfully the OP mentions this so the DW3 team are aware of what problems 100s or even 1000s of Carriers can cause. I'm not sure how they can avoid the issues, but at least they're not naive enough to think having 100s of carriers following along is a good thing. Its not, and until Frontier find a solution, it never will be.

I literally bought this game specifically to take part in DW2 after a friend who'd played Elite from the beginning said how good DW1 was, and it's what first got me hooked on the game and kept me interested 1000s of hours later.

I will definitely be taking part in DW3

* Edit * just found this screenshot of myself and some friends at the launch of DW2
