DLC18 discussion and predictions

I dont think that its the small amount of ungulates that make wetlands, grasslands and na so well received. Its rather that the small amount of ungulates allows for other groups to be represented aswell and get more variety in.

Like wetlands has 2 ungulates, a rodent, a reptile, a bird, a monotreme, a carnivoran and even an amphibia. Its peak diversity and i really wish frontier would go back to make animal packs more similar to this againt.
That's just a different side of the same coin, though. Haha. To allow for variety you can really only have 1-2 of any given type of animall. But I also think the species selection is important.

I do recall people being really confused by the addition of the buffalo and lechwe for wetlands. People were generally accepting of the wildebeest for grasslands (which was interesting) but there was still an err of "but that could have been something else."

What's interesting too is that the two packs we're discussing also had geographic diversity and offered up something new/different that could be used beyond the pack (e.g., the enrichment items from wetlands; the butterfly houses and pieces from grasslands) which further helps things along.

It's a precarious balance they have to strike!

Dlc Announcement maybe on the week after July 11th [SUMMER SALE], so July 18th announcement day and maybe a pack on july 25-30th they could release both console and pc dlc on same day.

Welp arid got no excuses to not be the literal same type of deal as a general worldwide desert pack and yes that would have made people far less annoyed as it would have forced diversity go figure. Swapping out the rhino, one antelope and the donkey for lets say the collared peccary they were cooking anyways and an australian monitor and the yellow footed rock wallaby then wed be with a similar amount of "clones" and im sure people would still be upset about the lack of a baboon and bird with people cursing at the second monitor but it certanly wouldnt be the sad joke that gets brought up every time people talk about the worst pack. Even just changing one of the ungulates to the tortoise would have softend the blow by alot.
Like sheesh imagine having animal quality of frontier at its best but still being regulary ranked below arctic, now thats a blow

It’s actually kinda upsetting the wasted potential in so many packs last year, arid and tropical could’ve been incredible packs and although I think Eurasia was less wasted potential there was definitely still some

Arid could’ve been a banger either as a African only pack or a global pack
1. Crested Porcupine
2. Dromedary
3. Hamadryas Baboon
4. Honey Badger
5. African Spurred Tortoise
6. Grey Crowned Crane
7. Secretary Bird

1. Crested Porcupine
2. Hamadryas Baboon
3. Secretary Bird
4. Blackbuck
5. Greater Rhea
6. Patagonian Mara
7. Grey Crowned Crane

Tropical should’ve been an animal pack
1. Spider or Howler Monkey
2. Coati
3. Roseate Spoonbill
4. Fossa
5. Red River Hog
6. Mantles Guereza
7. Victoria Crowned Pigeon

Eurasia should’ve had more range across the continent as opposed to just cold themed
1. Wild Boar
2. Wolverine
3. Mute Swan
4. Blackbuck
5. Langur
6. Takin
7. Himalayan Monal

If i remember correctly the confusion came from the buffalo not being the domestic variety and the lechwe being a generally not well known animal.
But tbh i can see why the went with these two. Having a domestic animal in a biome pack just feels kinda wrong to me as they arent really part of the wild. And the lechwe was also something new as a water adjecent antilope, still i think pretty much everyone would have prefered a duck or something here but that doesnt mean the lechwe was a bad pick.

I think people generally were accepting of the wildebeest for multiple reason. The first is that grasslands are prime ungulate, and specifically antelope habitat, so i think pretty much everyone already expected there to be one. Looking back im honestly surprised we only got one ungulate in grasslands.
And the second and likely bigger reason is that its and upgrade to the basegame black wildebeest in every single way, its way more iconic, more common and looks infinetly better

if we got a duck during that pack it would be a waterfowl disaster

I think Eurasia was fine for it's theme but i would've swapped the saiga for the blackbuck or the Palla's cat or heck even the markhor. I've come to accept the wisent do to their importance as iconic European fauna and Conservation value but i still think it was better suited as anniversary gift rather that takin a spot in DLC.

The Arid pack was even more confusing because it was the follow up to the other two biome based animal packs with great varied and global roster (Grasslands, Wetlands) yet they decided it should be Focus on one continent this time around. And like you said, a more widespread roster would've been perfect. Arid is such a general term that could include any desertic biome from both cold and hot weathers. So mara, rhea, blackbuck, secretary bird, baboon alongside dromedary and porcupine could have been an amazing pack.
