DLC18 discussion and predictions

Tbh ‘Old World’ is the only suggested theme that really fits all of the clues we’ve had so far. I reckon it’s likely we’ll get Old World and New World Animal Packs in very quick succession of eachother as a way to round out the roster
This is my copium theory as well haha

But idk, i don't see them naming a DLC "Old World" animal pack. Plus the tree kangaroo and the echidna doesn't really fit with this theory.

Like @AndyZoos said, the thought of a "collection" pack the fills the gaps in previous DLCs is really nice.

So far we have:
Arid/Africa: Baboon... and maybe secretary?
Eurasia: Markhor and Palla's cat
Oceania/Australia: Tree roo and Echidna

For the Tropical pack the want at the time was for coati and NWM. Grasslands was pretty much perfect but people theorized the secretary bird for that one as well, though Emu was the priority (although the secretary and grey crowned crane were both mentioned for the speculation of the Conservation pack). Barnyard was suspiciously missing a duck. Aquatic could've been the perfect pack for a Pelican (Wetlands as well). Twilight was missing the devil and the kiwi but that was fixed later so while there are some animals that could be a good add-on to that pack (like the aye aye or the ocelot) i think is pretty much fine as it is now. Arctic choose the wolf over the arctic fox that was later added in the NA pack, but the musk ox was also a big miss. The walrus would fit for that pack as well, though the possibility for pinnipeds came later.

So idk. Would be nice if they are trying to "complete" what we expected for those packs and what we feel is still missing but then we come back to the dictionary and the freaking dik dik and sifaka haha

I'm curious about what the theme and rest of the roster will be.

An Old World/New World set of animal packs (one in October with another, maybe, in December) would be a really nice way to end things and round things out. It would be a nice way to work in some of the big hitters across the world in a really, really nice way.

But I'm with everyone where I'm pretty confused as to what this pack might be. Ultimately, I'm still leaning toward highlands I think but the key art is so darn wonky. Hah! But by the same token? I don't really buy some of the suggestions that people have for a "celebration/anniversary/zookeeper" pack and what the key art would look like. Just because all of what people expect (e.g., balloons, a zoo set-up) would deviate so much from the usual key art format which I don't really think Frontier would do.

Soo as of right now, it's feeling like everything's on the table. Haha.

EDIT: There's also still room for the pack to be bigger than usual. Or for it to be just habitat animals with some scenery a la Barnyard. So yeah really no clue what to expect. Kinda cool, kinda fun, etc.

For a good zoo roster, a brown bear is absolutely mandatory. It is by far the bear species that is more often kept in zoos, almost doubling the second most kept. Maybe a generic brown bear would be enough instead of adding two subspecies (one for America and the other for Eurasia).

According to those numbers, and bearing in mind how iconic the bears are for the places they are from, I think that the truly essential bears for a zoo game are:
Brown bear, American black bear and Polar Bear. Due to their fame, including giant pandas makes sense too.
that map is missing a few polar bears are kept in at least one zoo in australia yet isnt on the map
New Zealand is literally part of Australia! I’m confused if you had ever seen an animals in real life. How the heck aren’t a shoebill and walrus aren’t VISUALLY unique. Yes you can just grab a gray seal and put two tusks on it but there’s a difference between rig and what these animals look like. How does a Dik Dik look like a oryx? The monel I can understand but the rest are unique compared to our game’s roster.
ok you seriously need to stop new Zealand and Australia are not and never have been the same country they have very different histories with fauna Australia sharing more in common with new guinea than it does new Zealand and new Zealand is arguably on a separate continent to Australia before you aggressively show your ignorance please actually do any research

Depending on where you are from, Australia can indeed refer to a continent but this one only includes Western Papua, Papua New Guinea, Tasmania, Australia itself (as a country) and a few small islands. It doesn't include New Zealand :) New Zealand is part of Oceania. I invite people that come from this part of the world to correct me if I'm wrong.
The only time Australia and New Zealand are the same continent is using the Oceania model and under some Australasia defentions.

New Zealand is a special case where geologically it is just a mostly submerged micro continent called Zealandia since it contains a large amount of continental crust and cratons.

so geographically and ecologically there is very little Australia shares with new Zealand and pre Europeans even culturally what is shared is minimal but then again Oceania as a concept is pretty weak.

Oooo dlc is imminent I can’t wait
Once we get our roster of animals then I can begin new habitats, determine who will be sharing habitat, relocate things, long story short I can then begin to use that time before dlc is released for fun creative planning.

There won't be an Old World / New World pack series and here's why:

These terms are problematic because they erase indigenous history and voices.

They are being brought into question even in the wine industry, and in primateology when referring to old/new world monkeys.

The scientific community is increasingly moving away from these terms, with opposition to them increasing.

I would expect that Frontier would take great care to research and get advice on the customer-facing language they use, especially when naming their products.

Aside from this, I just don't think it's a good concept. It's simply too broad. It splits the world in half, and that's rather a large pool to draw a handful of species from. A narrower focus helps a product sell because it tells the customer what's in it, drawing them in to learn more about it. Old/New World doesn't communicate much so it doesn't excite or interest enough to get much traction outside of the dedicated customer base.

The Left Side DLC and the Right Side DLC. Your choice

For real though, any chance of an announcement tomorrow? I know Tuesday and Thursday are typical days, but I recall we had an announcement on a Wednesday once
Yeah, checks own spreadsheet, we've had four announcements on Wednesdays before. We've actually had announcements every day of the week multiple times. Thursdays are popular. There hasn't been a Tuesday announcement since Oceania. There's every good chance of an announcement any day this week.

And so therefore...every good chance of us driving ourselves coconuts every day until then! 🌴

Thanks for sharing this info/resources. I had no idea!

That said, even using different forms I think I would actually prefer a more general pack theme if this is truly the final DLC. Simply because it offers the best opportunity to bring in the most number of species for the most people. If it's a highlands pack? If memory serves, this would effectively rule out 50% of the top 10 on the meta wishlist and most of the top 5. It's not a question of "fairness" so much as what would do well for the player base as a whole (and, frankly, what would feel appropriate as a way to "send-off" the game).

I agree with you that a pack with a "narrow" focus is better from a marketing standpoint but there's precedent for them doing that with the final JWE2 pack (and I might argue that a few of the Planet Coaster and Planet Zoo packs aren't so obvious too but that's not the strongest of cases :ROFLMAO:).

Of course, this all goes out the window if we have more packs left but that's so up in the air I'm not even willing to entertain that idea at the moment. I'm assuming this is it for now. :cautious:

I'm going a little higher. 15% tomorrow, 15% Thursday, 40% Friday, or 30% next week.
