DLC18 discussion and predictions

That's not really what "ABC" species are in zoo jargon--they refer specifically to the charismatic megafauna that drive most casual zoogoers--elephants, giraffes, big cats, great apes, bears, rhinos, and hippos. For aquariums, add cetaceans, large sharks, and maybe pinnipeds.
I think “ABC” animals for both zoos and more general pop culture are largely the same. Not all of them are megafauna (though most definitely tend to be). There are plenty of people that known about and go out of their way at the zoo to see macaws, capybaras, meerkats, sloths, otters, etc. and all these are smaller species. What qualifies a species as “ABC” is how ingrained it is into larger human culture. Is it one of the first species you think of when asked What starts with this letter?

Out of boredom, here's how I'd do things:

  • Fall/Winter 2024 - Highlands (or whatever it's called) animal pack
    1. Palla's cat
    2. Hamadryas baboon
    3. Markhor
    4. Spectacled bear
    5. Aoudad
    6. Golden pheasant
    7. L'Hoerst monkey
    8. Jackson's chameleon (E)
  • Early 2025 (let's say January/February) - Neotropics pack
    1. Black howler monkey
    2. Scarlet ibis
    3. Greater rhea
    4. Patagonian mara
    5. Hoffman's two-toed sloth (WE)
  • May 2025 - Zookeeper Collection animal pack
    1. Geoffrey's spider monkey
    2. American black bear (sorry, bear haters)
    3. Great white pelican
    4. Any tree kangaroo
    5. Victoria crowned pigeon
    6. Grey langur
    7. Any duck
    8. King cobra (E)

I always thought "ABC" animals were supposed to be animals everyone knows, like how everyone (who speaks a language using the Latin alphabet or a similar script) should know their ABC's. Like your lions, tigers, bears, wolves, elephants. And this list of animals changes, like how capybaras are becoming more well known with laymen outside Latin America. Not sure of any animals that have become less popular with the general public (like with dinosaurs, Allosaurus was way more popular before Tyrannosaurus was well known).

The Zookeeper pack could be tweaked a bit, maybe a secretary bird or a crane for the pigeon, and the langur for something else. Not dissing the animals, but Frontier adding two primates AND two birds in one pack? Outrageous!!!

They will give it to us for free. That way you don't even pay for it, Mr. Hyrax!

Who knows. We did get 2 rodents 1 pack and 2 birds another. Jus' sayin'

Is national zookeeper day not in the third week of July though? I saw a bunch of zoos post about it in that time. Or was a week not enough and they need an extra day lol?
