DLC20 Discussion (maybe, but why not?)

The news thread got me thinking about sub-continents, so I made a few Animal Packs

Frigid (Alaska) Animal Pack:
  • Muskox
  • Walrus
  • Sea Otter
  • Common Eider
  • American Black Bear
  • Elk
  • Rock Ptarmigan
India Animal Pack:
  • Nilgai
  • Blackbuck
  • Honey Badger
  • Lion-Tailed Macaque
  • Asian Forest Tortoise
  • Northern Red Muntjac
  • Temminck's Tragopan
Cono (Southern Cone) Animal Pack:
  • Patagonian Mara
  • South American Coati
  • Black-&-Gold Howler
  • Marsh Deer
  • Red-Legged Seriema
  • Chaco Chachalaca
  • Argentine Tegu

My work laptop is broken so I did this.

A 12-animal finale pack just for us superfans. I think there is something for everyone here? With the ABB as a bonus anniversary animal. This is a kickass pack if I do say so myself and even if these are not all my personal favourites.

The hare is in last position because that last spot could be highly debated, but with zero lagomorphs in the game I think there is a good argument for having it, even if it's not at the top of many wishlists.

Think of the mods we could get with the hare, the duck, the turtle and the pelican in the game!

On one hand, I would say that unfortunately the Mara may be a lost cause now (which is really really sad), as any remaining 1 or 2 South American spots should go to a Coati and a final new World Monkey. On the other hand, a Mara would no doubt be less work intensive than the Coati, and likely less work intensive than some of the other monkey choices (Howler/Tamarins/Spider) I guess it could flip either way. And that of course is assuming there will be any South American animals coming in the next pack.

Players are still very enthusiastic about pz

I keep seeing this come up - there is actually a difference between the tanuki and the raccoon dog. the tanuki, aka the Japanese raccoon dog, is an entirely different species and AFAIK not in very many holdings outside of Japan. If we get a raccoon dog, it's probably going to be the mainland species, not the tanuki.
This Is Frontier We're Talking About, They Gave Us The Titan Beetle And Wild Water Buffalo. I Don't Think How Common It Is In Captivity Influences There Choices Much.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm not familiar with any of this two animals m actually, I've never seen one in real life!

Fair. Personally I’d still go for tanuki for icon status

Since they are going out of their way to add every animal i dislike or find extremely boring or just creepy / uncanny (like tanuki) I'm sure they are 100% a possibility.

Next pack could Indeed be Asia. My only hope is for a pheasant and the blackbuck.

But ideal roster for an Asia Pack would be...

1. Blackbuck
2. Muntjac
3. Golden pheasant
4. Damoiselle crane or painted stork
5. Mandarín duck
6. Honey badger
7. Golden snub nosed monkey

What i think an Asia Pack would look like Made by Frontier:

Blackbuck
Yak
Pérez David deer or.muntjak
Damoiselle crane
Honey badger
Raccoon dog
Golden snub nosed monkey

Here's a conversation topic I think needs to be addressed:

So every continent got a pack from 2020-2021 and starting from 2022 we got biome packs and a few miscellaneous ones.

Now since 2023 we have gotten a few continent "revisit" packs.
Australia > Oceania
Europe/Asia > Eurasia
North/South America > Americas

However there is one pack that is a bit of an outlier, Arid. This pack obviously is the one connecting to the desert biome but it also infamously has a completely African roster and many people do see it as "Africa 2". The question is if Frontier sees it this way and does Arid's existence make a revisit to Africa (like a safari pack, which lets face it would probably be exclusively African, sorry blackbuck...) unlikely?

Honestly I am not sure, I think this could be a pretty strong theme but there was quite a backlash to Arid on release.
Arid got backlash because it was a bad theme for the roster. The roster was very ungulate heavy and got backlash for that as well but the main issue was that arid is a theme that should of encompassed multiple continents or just not entirely been the same region in literally all ways but name is the africa animal pack.
It also matches up perfectly with the africa pack both with the scenery set having the dromedary camel signs and being north african based the specific subsection of arid africa they chose to focus on for the arid pack.

I could very easily see a safari pack featuring almost entirely african animals since africa always has animals people want and safari evoke very strong connotations with africas grasslands, there is only a very small handful of animals that could even fit in with a safari theme without feeling out of place one of those being the blackbuck.

What is everyones most wanted habitat animal for each of these groups now?

Carnivorans - South American Coati
Ungulates - Reeves' Muntjac
Primates - Guianan Squirrel Monkey
Other Mammals - Rock Hyrax
Birds - White Stork
Reptiles - Argentine Black-and-White Tegu
Carnivorans - sea otter
Ungulates - sumatran rhino
Primates - cotton top tamarin
Other Mammals - common brushtail possum
Birds - superb lyrebird
Reptiles - perentie

Which is way i think a more general savannah pack would be cooler. That way you can still do african animals, but also sprinkle some in from places like india, australia or south america.
And you can still reasonable theme it around safaris

Honestly I think it would be more likely to see the tanuki since it has a stronger presence within gaming and general media than the mainland raccoon dog and for the most part serves the same purposes. It also is just that little bit of a strange pick that it seems like a very frontier move.

This Is Frontier We're Talking About, They Gave Us The Titan Beetle And Wild Water Buffalo. I Don't Think How Common It Is In Captivity Influences There Choices Much.
Titan beetle was a base game animal. Early PlanZo days had odd choices.
The wild water buffalo, many suspect it was them trying to follow the feedback after receiving the llama, a domestic animal, so they went with the wild Buffalo to make the fans happy

A better example would be the saiga or proboscis monkey.
Personally, I'm ok with the "common/not common in captivity" thing as long as it's found in captivity period

If we got either the tanuki or the raccoon dog, I would be dancing, but given the choice I'd have the tanuki. I have longed since launch to make a Japanese zone and just the one crane and a sprinkle of sub-ins isn't enough to do it justice.

It is indeed time for a continental Asia pack.

My wishful-thinking roster is:

  • Tanuki
  • Honey badger
  • Malabar or Indian Giant Squirrel, or large-eared pika
  • Hanuman langur
  • Slow loris
  • Blackbuck
  • Painted crane or Chinese pond heron

I’d go bananas if the Asia animal pack won’t have Père David’s deer 😱
Yeah. And whatever animals I felt about not being there soon, it'll take six months for next pack of animals to be fully announced, and no longer three to four months due to probably or maybe focusing on bundle of previous packs for Console Edition. Kind of too bad that Console Edition wasn't (probably couldn't) completed with all previous dlc packs before upcoming PC ones.
