The elephant hate is actually genuinely starting to upset me. I don't understand it :'(

Together with me. To make me unhappy, they would have to throw in a Sumatran Tiger level clone and/or a canid.
To each their own. Personally i feel the roe deer is pretty much the last animal europe needs
It doesn't upset me yet, but I do think it is getting a little over the top.
Deer is ok but don’t care about the Elephant. Sad about the ducks though. Hoping for at least one cool bird.
Let's just say, it could have been anything else.

As many others have pointed out, it's nice to have a "remake" of a base-game animal, but elephants weren't too high of a priority for anyone since they haven't aged as bad as something like the big cats... Also, the Bornean Elephant doesn't do anything to fix the main problem with the current Indian elephant, which is the size (a lot of people think the current elephant is too small, and now we're getting an even smaller elephant).
It adds basically nothing new in terms of how you build enclosures, and it's very rare in captivity IRL.
This is why people don't really like this pick
I could also see a hare or a chamois, but I wouldn't want e.g. an European brown bear. I wouldn't necessarily want a wild cat or something either.To each their own. Personally i feel the roe deer is pretty much the last animal europe needs
It's about as close to an objectively bad pick as we can get.
I mean, personally much as there are other cats I like as species, the only one left that feels like it has a specific niche to fill in a zoo is serval, which wouldnt fit in this pack anyway.
Perfect example of great animal in real life, especially to those have seen them, but a pretty lackluster pick for the game.
Unless of course it is an Old World Pack.
I do get it, but still the hate is getting a little exaggerated.
Personally, other than it being a third (relatively unnecessary) elephant, I think the elephant is disappointing because it lowers my expectations for other animals in the pack.
They added a clone that basically nobody asked for, so what's stopping them from including stuff like, say, Chinese red panda or Indian wild boar?
Now I'm fully prepared for the worst, and I'm starting to accept that the Blackbuck (the only interesting Asian animal) will be inevitably saved for PZ2

So with seemingly 4 species confirmed I am feeling fairly optimistic for this pack, getting another monkey is already an incredible win in my eyes and although I don't personally care for them that much the Pere David's Deer and Honey Badger are still quite solid. Most of my top picks for the remaining slots have already been ruled out an absolute shame for another pack with no waterfowl or pelican.
1. Any kind of pheasant would be incredible my top choice would be the Himalayan Monal but I really wouldn't mind if we get something else
2. The Blackbuck, we need some more generic Indian ungulates and this would be my top choice but again the Nilgai would also be fine
3. I kind of don't mind for the last spot as long as it isn't another cat or dog, another monkey or bird would be a very unrealistic expectation, maybe the muntjac or a small carnivore like a marten or mongoose?

But, but...
- There are plenty of animals in the game that are not kept in captivity
- It is distinct from other elephants. It is 2-3 feet shorter than the Asian elephant. It has bigger ears, a longer tail, straighter tusks and is described as having a "baby face"
- It has a strong conservation/education purpose befitting of the game's ethos
- It lives in a very different habitat to other elephants: thick rainforest. It is much shier and not domesticated or used for work, unlike other Asian elephants. For the Indian elephant you can build a temple or market or savannah or dry brush type habitat. For the Bornean you can go thick jungle, mixed with the macaque and maybe the babirusa.
- They rep the Bornean rainforest, a large and essential (and underrepresented) virgin rainforest
- we haven't had another elephant since base game and this is the perfect one
People want another zebra, another giraffe, we have multiple leopards and foxes and wolves, we have two flamingos, so many pigs and goats and antelope, we're getting a fourth deer...
I get that it takes up a slot and isn't everyone's pick. But why must everyone jump on this horrible bandwagon. Using words like "rancid" is just so extremely hateful. This animal is nearly extinct, I feel so sad that such a vulnerable animal is being spoken about this way on a forum of animal lovers.

Really? I know I haven't been on the forums in a bit but the frustration seems pretty clear to me.

Not to harp on you, because obviously all animals are super cool! But this is a video game, and we already have the two major elephant species in game. Even worse that the Bornean elephant can’t do anything the Indian elephant can’t do.
So I’ll use myself as an example, after waiting for a duck, any duck, for the past 5 years it can feel like a slap in the face when Frontier decides to give us an animal that had no discussion or hype before it got leaked. And as I mentioned above, the Bornean elephant doesn’t add anything new.
Sure, I can get why people don’t like a coyote for personal reasons. For gameplay reasons we have an arid canid for the Americas. While not super “out there” compared to some of the other canids in game, it has a niche. Part of what is making me bitter about PZ is that I can only take so many “no we really need this insert animal here to fill this specific gameplay niche, it’s totally different than the four already in game” and Frontier keeps adding those animals. While some of the birds I want, which I have waited years for, are still not available at all. It’s less that I despise the animals being added, and more the animals I like to build for are being ignored. The elephants fall into that category.
We have the mute swan, I love the swan. I also love tropical houses, and ducks are common in tropical houses. Take a guess what I am still waiting on. It makes it even better when I have to watch a super rare elephant in captivity get added before a duck which could be found in Hundreds of Zoos Around the World
This is starting to sound like the arid pack, some poor choices and animal fans for said choices. Best not to take any negativity of the animals personally.
Personally, The Arid pack wasn't Bad, yeah, had 5 ungulates, but very different from each other
