DLC20 Discussion (maybe, but why not?)

Okay I was just writing in another thread about how having the red crowned crane in the game allows us to build habitats for all crane-like animals with a decent substitute. So here's a question, assuming we get an asian DLC: What habitat types an we not yet build with any animal in the game, that could ome in an Asia dlc?

Edit: except the obvious ones like aviaries and aquariums

Examples I can think of:

1. Rock Hyrax - rodent cliffside desert habitat - I tried in the game, the closest ones are the porcupine, which can't climb slopes or jump rocks, and the hamadrayas baboon, which is a completely different animal that requires much more spacethan a hyrax would.
2. Muntjac - temperate/tropical small ungulate habitat - we finally have a tiny ungulate in the dikdik, but it is an african savannah animal
3. Pelican - nothing similar at all in the game. Closest you get is the swan in term of habitat design.
4. pond turtle/softshell turtle - we have nothing at all in terms of aquatic turtles except the exhibit terrapin. This is one gap that would allow so much versatility if we get even one species in this category.
5. Hedgehog - If we can get the prairie dog, domesticated sheep and porcupine, we can get a hedgehog. And we have nothing at all similar in habitat design
6. Squirrel - same as the above, a basic zoo build that has nothing similar to it in Planet zoo.
7. Loris - we have nothing at all similar to this in habitat design

In the upcoming pack the honey badger would be our first hot climate mustelid that's not an otter. Which is a great change.

It really is so odd that they posted that key art and just let the Planet Zoo twitter sit for 2+ weeks. They didn't repost the art and didn't even share any of the JWE3 or PC2 announcements.

I'm not mad. It's whatever... I'm just legitimately perplexed.

Maybe because it was a longer wait? It really does look forgotten though.

Maybe because it was a longer wait? It really does look forgotten though.

I guess that's the thing. If it was going to be a "longer wait" on purpose, why not just post it on the socials in the first place at a more appropriate time? They probably would have gotten more squeeze out of it by letting people have the artwork directly rather than just screenshots of the YouTube clip, y'know?

Just feels odd to me is all.

Nobody wants a tree kangaroo more than me. But that's such a big stretch. Haha. I don't see it happening.

Still, if it were to happen? I wouldn't mind. And would 100% commission mod re-works of the species we do want instantly.

I don't see much of an issue with say the grizzled or golden-mantled tree kangaroos, just a shame since they both have excellent mods of them.

I’m excited for the monkey, and very excited for the deer , but I still can’t help but feel disappointed by what we aren’t getting.

Man, I love how we are at the point we get to have our third elephant (one not common in captivity) before I ever, EVER seem to get a duck. Seeing as to what the leak was, it only makes it even more sad. I’ve been visiting some zoos more recently, and I’ll be honest I’m not dying for another elephant. Want to know what we don’t have in game? An animal I see in almost every zoo? Ducks, waterfowl, geese, swans, screamers.

Obviously I’m not saying every DLC has to go my way, but getting the Swan two years ago followed by nothing is such a disappointment. I was really hoping making the Waterfowl Winners Club would show at least something in terms of interest, not to mention the general public and children do love waterfowl. They are common in kids areas, as well as some of my favorite habitats like tropical houses.

Obviously for us bird people we still could get a pheasant, and maybe the crane? But above all the other birds I need waterfowl. “Can’t you mod them into the game?” You can mod anything at this point including flying birds and fish, if Frontier is trying to fill in packs I don’t see why birds can continued to be left in the state that they are while we get multiples of other animals.

Either way, I’m still looking forward to the announcement and I would be more than happy to eat my words if need be. Also the Peere David’s deer my beloved

I absolutely agree I also wished they continued the waterfowl theme and Barnyard would be WAY better with a simple duck, A Mallard! It would fit in so perfectly. Same with Zookeeper and Americas, they could add in a Pelican! My ponds feels so empty with just swans, I wish we had ducks.

There is hope for the bird lovers. A new crane? Wouldn't add much, but a pheasant? fingers crossed! Perhaps a painted stork? That one is also pretty Asian.

I get that circumstances mean not every animal will be groundbreaking but when I think of all the cloney species and subspecies we could get which would make more sense than an elephant…

On the bright side, I guess we will get a decent elephant sign out of this.

Real talk: I think we have a good shot at a bird in this pack. They've absolutely crushed it with avians in the last 3/4 packs (swan, chicken, flamingo) which leads me to believe they have somebody at the team with skills that lean into that.

Pure speculation but... I dunno. I feel like we got one in the mix! Between ducks, cranes, and pheasants there's plenty of options that could work. Personally, I'd hope for a duck (despite having said pheasant earlier; I wasn't thinking straight).

Yeah the only issue is the internal data suggested the next community challenge is for semi aquatic animals and ducks weren’t listed at all. I would love to be wrong, and would love to eat my words. If we get a mandarin duck, lion tailed macaque, and the Peere David’s deer it might become one of my favorite packs.

(Also the Bronx Zoo keeps mandarin ducks in the tropical houses, so I can make a convincing tropical house with waterfowl Finally)

They do live around farmlands, but I get your point. Maybe for this pack a Mandarin duck.

Good points. Work is scrambling my brain today and I forgot that even happened in my excitement. LOL

Either way, there's a scenario where the data is off. But it seems more likely that, yeah, maybe it's just the pheasant. I think I just really want a tropical duck. Great for implementation as-is and for mods.

Arabian ostrich incoming.

But more seriously, i think any waterbird being pretty much off the table has severly diminished the chance for a bird. Galliformes are now pretty much our only hope

If we are discussing land birds that aren't waterfowl, one species that I continually remember and then forget to mention is the coral-billed ground cukoo. A really quite pretty Indochinese bird that spends almost all its time on the ground, has been successfully kept and bred in the past (although not kept anywhere currently) and an Endangered species. It is extraordinarily obscure, but I'd still love to see it.

Regarding the Community Challenges... Isn't there precedent for a challenge just before a DLC to point toward what the DLC is? It's pretty limited, but if memory serves it's happened in a few instances? Or am I mistaken?

There won't be a duck or crane since there wad no mention of them in that leak. I have a slight hope for a pheasant. But if we are being realistic it will be a junglefowl (aka chicken in a colorful reskin)
