Do I, or do I not ?

I will give this one warning. If you get Robo Recall (free with the Touch extras) or any other Touch enabled games make sure you have plenty of clear space around you. Punching a desk that you could not see is surprisingly painful!

You can tell how good VR is but how excited existing owners become when someone says they've just bought one. Frankly I just want to come round to your house tomorrow to watch your face - LOL. :D

Edit: errr, that sounds creepy now I read it back - sorry. [where is it]

Excellent, now we just need to convince Neo-ST.

OK, Neo-ST, if you are reading this then watch out for my next post on here, which will be my reaction when i am up and running on my Rift, either tomorrow, but probably Friday as i have RL commitments tomorrow.

Than you Alec, i have a 1080 so will follow your guide.

Special thanks to Cmdr(s) Mad Mike, Heisenberg B.Damned and Alec Turner for their help in lightening my wallet :)

check you PM's regularly guys ;)

You're more than welcome mate. :) Several hundred miles from Southampton and in work tomorrow but off on Friday using holidays before they run out so feel free to PM me - nowhere near the knowledge of Alec or Mike but I do work in IT so I can normally sort out easy stuff if you get stuck.

i think he already hit the button

I do not know if I have mentioned this on this thread, but if you have the option make sure to get a second sensor. There is one with the normal Rift CV1 kit, you get another with the Touch kit, and you can buy one on its' own. I have found that, since I bought the Touch (and set it up) the level of detail with VR games has gone UP (well, to my eyes, at least). I believe that this is due to better triangulation of the headset.

I just noticed that Rift comes with its own headphones, however I already have my own. Did you guys left Rift's headphones or took them off and used your own ? How does it all work with cables then ?

It uses the USB link, and they are of good quality. If you want to use your own the built in ones can easily be removed (one bolt each, screwdriver provided), but you will also need to tell Windows the Rift speakers are no longer the default option. I use the Rift speakers; a lot less clutter and hassle.

But are they any good? I have hi-fi headphones with dedicated amp&dac, not sure if they're worth replacing with Rift ones in VR games...

All I can suggest is for you to try them and see what you think. I apologise if this does not help, but while I have found the Rift speakers to be of an acceptable quality for me I cannot say if you will find them good enough for you.

suck it and see.

i am no audiophile, but i no longer use my sharkoon xtatic genuine 5.1 surround sound headset as i find the rift headphones and mic to be just fine.

you sound like you may be more discerning than i... after all, i do the cardinal sin of using onboard (albeit decent quality soundblaster) sound solution for my audio, which others would say is a no no.

The Rift has a mic?
Didn't know that :D

P.S.
This guy played a big role too, in helping me decide whether I want the Rift or not.
So if you're here "BarteNERD" and reading this, just wanted to let you know you're as guilty as them! :D

You were correct, it's a bit weird but at the same time enjoyable to watch someone use VR for the first time. It's like going through the excitement together :D

This has been a fantastic thread to read, thanks to everyone for answering all the questions posed by others.

I've got one as well as I'm in a similar boat to the OP.

I want VR, I really do. I've got a 1080, I think my machine will run it ok (might need a new SSD but we'll see). My problem comes down to Vive versus Rift.

I was Rift all the way until I heard about their Occulus software, their version of Steam or Origin. I don't mind Steam, but I'll refuse to have any Origin game on my machine as Origin is basically a rootkit.

Is Occulus as bad as Origin? I've heard some disturbing rumours about it, mostly now that Facebook own Rift there's a huge concern with privacy etc. Vive appeals to me more because it's just Valve, but Rift seems better suited to ED. Which is really, for me what it's all about.

Have any of you been annoyed with the Rift software? Do I have to download and run ED THROUGH the rift software or can I use my original install?

Sorry for the barrage of paranoia and questions, I really am getting sick of all these different platforms producers are forcing us to run on our machines all the time, can't we just install things on our hard drives like we used too? :p

Got both and I prefer the Rift for playing ED, both are fantastic and they are slightly different beasts (awaiting touch so I can't yet do a comparison with Vive vs Rift walkabout mode - but I will).

Personally, from a paranoia point of view, neither bother me that much but that's probably more about life experience than anything else. Big bad companies/governments don't concern me as much as what else life's thrown at me.

ultimately the Rift is more comfortable to wear for extended periods of time, the cabling is less intrusive and the HMD is lighter (which makes a big difference).
