the numbers are pretty damning - though as pointed out, Frontier do not view this as a representation of the player base - just the (very vocal) forum
it's also hard to invest so much time and energy then admit you're on the wrong path. easier to throw good money after bad, as it were.

Yes, it would be interesting to see stats dating back from its release showing for each week:-
- Players assigned to a Power.
- Merits turned in.
- The breakdown of how those merits were earned (ie: Via what task/for what purpose).

I suspect there's be a constant clear drop in merits earned... If I'm right, I suspect there's been some "interesting" meetings discussing those figures...

Yup, how many are "playing" the game as a separate screen clicking a button to refill cargo hold with X generic PP commodity and once in a blue moon fly off to deliver it to the closest star system they can regardless if they NEED it.

I wonder if the devs have ever looked at that part and how "active" players really are.

Can't help but wonder if the implementation would have been a lot better if they'd engaged with the DDF first...

They didn't really need to. They could have looked at the feedback given during the Beta, held it back and redeveloped it. Instead they just pushed it out.

Whoa, almost 1300 votes! Looks like a crunchy number.

Maybe they'll crunch on it in the next newsletter?

Or maybe they'll make a new rare good out of it? Sammarco Crunchies with 200% more crunch for free!
*amount of actual crunchiness is subject to effects of crunchiness decay

The problem is, now it's out there, if some people are playing it they can't abandon it now, as much as I think the game wold be better without it. the horse has bolted and all that.

This is the biggest hurdle. For all we know Sandro and Michael are sitting in Cambridge drunk and shaking their heads saying "Why did we release this misbegotten hellspawn on our poor players and how do we fix it now?" Ok so they're probably not saying exactly that... :) perhaps a similar but less emotive response. Because there's people playing it, and because of pride they can't admit it's a stuff up and pull it... and realistically the game can use a decent political sim so pulling PP isn't the answer. Rather I'd be stopping development on the current PP and redesigning it from the ground up so that I could eventually replace the existing one with something actually worth playing, with sufficient scope and depth that it justifies a seperate expansion rather than just a small core update.

Can't help but wonder if the implementation would have been a lot better if they'd engaged with the DDF first...

Yes... but not because the DDF had been followed, but because to do so would mean they'd learned their lesson about rushing out half formed ideas, and gone with longer, more complete development and actual communication with players/testers instead of either ignoring us or telling us we're wrong.

Well, that actually sounds slightly promising don't you think?

My response on that thread:-

If you guys actually take a cold hard look at Powerplay, and actually have the round-appendages to give it a huge kick to:-
- Get rid of the player controlled (board game) aspects of it.
- Instead make Powers decide on their own best goals/objectives/agendas.
- Players can help with those goals/objectives/agendas via more traditional missions.
- Why not tie it into the local Factions? eg: If system is exploited by a Power, then a local Faction is available offering task/missions to help them. Keep it simple so no merits required or the like. You earn reputation/rank and/or CR.
- Offer modules when you've been affiliated with a Power long enough, and/or done enough tasks for them to be promoted up.
- And most importantly, the missions (tasks) are more varied and deeper. Let's try and introduce those convoy escorting/defense mechanics. Or blockage mechanics? Wing friendly missions. PvP promoting missions.

...I'll personally fly a T9 filled with pizza over there!

Please give it a cold hard look, because it just seems too unnecessarily complex , and missing the opportunity to make something truly interesting out of it at the moment. I'm sure it could fit into the existing ED Universe far more simply, while still offering the benefits of players being aligned against each other, and system dynamics/economics changing slowly over time.

ps: I'd even dare suggest, run any proposed big changes past the community?

I do fear they'll limit the scope of the revamp though so it'll basically stay much the same :(

Indeed, they have a history of doing "not nearly enough" when what they need is "something truly amazing and inspired" is what they really need.

Yep, I figured few people would get confused. :D

What I meant to say is such negativity (or should I say objectivity) might discourage FD from further consultations with the community. Perhaps I should have used more smiley's..

Yep...youre right...the smileys would have done it...I would have understood your cryptic comment clearly with a few added smileys...thanks for the explanation btw :)
