Do you use Voice Attack?

This is the best thing I've read all day :):):)

Any chance of a video when you've done it? :)

Sorry this took so long
Windows Movie Maker has given up on me, crahing on saving so have had to resort tot using a free trial which will cut half the sound but hopefully this gives you a taste of the monstrosity I have created.

Have them set to come on after a ideal period, so say if I go to get a cuppa I come back to this

That's awesome!

And according to the Singstar PS2 game I sound about the same. Now put them to the test with Singstar and see all their hopes get crushed in the most cruel way, just like mine were.
They show the same amount of enthusiasm as I would when forced to sing, so I hope they wont beat me. Thank you for creating a challenging but maybe defeatable opponent for me!

And I propose a challenge to you: Go from Sol to Beagle Point with those two singing the whole time. I suspect the self destruct button will look pretty friendly already when you leave the bubble, will be hotkeyed at Sagittarius A and bound to the joystick primary fire button at Colonia.

Seriously now, I like the adapted lyrics! Great work!

Magnificent stuff! :)

I was particularly taken with “What Shall We Do With A Drunken Commander” :) Must have taken a long time to construct it all; thanks for sharing the video, it has continued to make my day!

Well I am on the way Back from BP but probably to Colonia rather than Sol

The Mrs loves to tell them to shut up so wrote in some personalised responses to that as well

I've just installed Voice Attack so that I can get used to it before I get my VR kit (at Xmas.) I'm finding it a bit of a mixed result. Some commands don't work at all (if I say 'Boost' I get no result, but if I say 'Afterburners' it works) and VA initiates commands with me saying anything (switching lights on or opening the Galaxy Map for example - the latter not great when approaching the mail slot!) I use on-ear headphones with a built-in mic, so I'm wondering if VA is responding to game audio?

If you open VA settings by clicking on the wrench in the lower right corner on the main screen the Options screen will open.

On the second tab, "Recognition" there will be settings that will adjust the parameters that adjust sensitivity to background noise and Command weight.

I currently use a podcast quality mike set to Command weight 50, Minimum Confidence level 85. and Min unrecognized Confidence level 50

Be sure to train the speech engine as well, if you haven't done that.

Read the manual a bit for more in depth explanations of the settings. The more you dial in VA to your environment and equipment used, the more accurate it will be. It takes a bit of patience and fiddling around to get it right - but the payoff is worth it. That said, there will always be a few unexpected misinterpretations and words that VA has a hard time with. My system seems to have a big problem with "Orbit" whenever I use it.

Do you use Voice Attack and HCS Voice Packs?
If not why? or elaborate, thanks.

I used it for about 2 years. Brian Blessed, are you kidding me?!? Who doesn't want Prince Vultan screaming for vengeance when attacking? And his crossword exclamations are rather alarming. I also have Cpt Kirk for exploration. He is very well done and quite a knowledge base.

I used them separately, although I hear you can get into a full conversation with multiple packs.

I stopped using them when I bought my HOTAS. They were doing all the keybinds when I had just a simple joystick. Now I have every control mapped to what I need.

Yes, in VR, for doing things that are bound to 'some button way over there' rather than near the main control group (supercruise variants, change hud mode, FSS, etc.). For that I find it indispensable.

On the other hand, there are things it fails to recognise, and things it keeps false-triggering on (Friend on Voice Comms: "I'll be there in a minute!" Me: "Right." VA: "Lights on." Me: <sigh>). And things I just plain don't trust it to do, like running the galaxy map or basically anything with the HUD panels (it might be fixed now, but Back In The Day it would tend to forget what tab you had selected...) Oh, and last time I used it the 'Explorer Jump' macro seemed to have no idea what HUD mode you were in, which was annoying.

...So in pancake mode, I wouldn't go near it, funny responses or not. :)

You can change words... like program it to accept BOOST instead. It has a learning curve, not ready to go out of the box.

I "use" it.

I set it up with a bunch of custom commands that I wrote to do a lot of different stuff. But then I found it tedious to talk to the computer over the loud youtube video or whatever that my wife might be watching.

So in actuality I rarely talk to it, and I only keep it running because I set up a script to make it read comms out loud. So I get to hear a woman with a Scottish accent (I use Cereproc's Heather voice, not an HCS pack) tell me about how salty another commander is getting without having to look up at the chat and read it myself.

You really need to do the training of the recognition program for it to work well.

Voice Attack, especially when coupled with an HCS voice pack is an excellent way to reduce task overload for players learning how to fly their ships and play the game but, I found that as my skill level has increased and I have grown more experienced playing the game I now use fewer and fewer of the available commands, because I can now perform those tasks quickly using the keyboard or controls on the HOTAS.

I now find VA most useful for commands that require a lot of menu navigation such as targeting sub-systems or asking for docking clearance. o7

I used it for a while, but then got tired of having to always update. It’s just as easy to use the buttons on my flight stick. In VR it was pretty helpful, but then I like to actually use the pop up menus ingame as it feels more immersive, like I’m controlling a ship.

Cough. EDD has free voice control if you want another solution which is free and also requires minimal setup. ;-)

I've been using EDD for years (and find new things that it does all the time). Every now and then I try to setup the voice control it states is available. Never been succesful. I don't doubt that it exists and works - just can't make it work for me (been a while since I tried)

Is there a step by step procedure somewhere that might walk one thru the process; and if so - link???

Tried it once, long time ago and didn't liked it. I can do things much faster with the single stroke of a key on the keyboard or button on my X52 PRO. Don't have to talk to my ship to boost, open the map, control my power distributor or whatever else I might need to do. Another reason for not using it is that I'm playing at night often enough to be concerned about making noise. I like the idea very much though. It is pretty cool feature but not too useful for me.

I use VA with HCS because I play ED in VR with a game pad, so the keyboard is really not practical. The gamepad handles all of the main controls perfectly and reliably. VA handles the rest. For those pesky background voice glitches (particularly if there is a television in the same room :)), you can edit the "English Singularity.hcs" file with notepad+ to change the stock command to something else - remove, add to or replace the word that keeps glitching.

If you want an alternative to VA, consider Voicebot. It works well, is easy to use, cheap to buy and you can download profiles for ED (and other games) from within the program. I prefer VA for ED because of the HCS voice pack, but find Voicebot is better for DCS World which needs custom commands to get it working with VR. VA lets you make custom commands, but I find Voicebot's approach much simplier and more reliable in that respect. There are no downloadable profiles for the Harrier AV-8B which I use, so for me customisation is a key feature when talking about DCS.

I don't use voice attack as I am very self conscious of talking/shouting at a computer as it is likely to garner odd looks from others. I do however use EDDI with a voice pack to give additional information in game.
