Docking Fails and Successes

note that the next 3 involve a race that had us land on illegal pads

Jhyrryl and his sledgehammer landings :D...those three penal colonies are still recovering from the damage!

I once made a guide on how to dock an Anaconda...

That flip docking looked as slick as it could get [up]

The thing I like about Outposts is to me they're still quite tricky to work out where the pads are going to be, but the upside is that they lend themselves to some more stylish landings, even when I'm not racing.

I fully agree, I love the "dance" that is sometimes possible to make around outposts to approach the assigned pad, also outpost dockings are very good for FA off training. The best is when you are able to approach and dock on a clean trajectory, like making it in a single curve while controlling and aligning attitude to land squarely on the pad. Not frequent, but huuuge satisfaction.

Speaking of flipping over to dock. While it's hard to get a video myself doing it, I remembered that during the first Christmas livestream I completely overshot my speed docking challenge (I made the cardinal sin of going for the extra boost), but I did at least finish stylishly :p I can't tell whether the start from a certain point is working or not, so if not, skip to 34:52

Look at the fresh faced, beardless Ed :D

My tutorial on how to land at a planetary outpost whilst wanted with wanted passengers.... I call it the "Brace for Impact" manoeuvre although I think someone may have already coined it as "The bellyflop"
Don't mind the audio, I had a livestream podcast type thing on a 2nd monitor. Zero punctuation aftershow if anyone is interested.

I have a few versions where it went less well, sadly not caught on video although lets just say it involves more than just a few disgruntled passengers after either loosing 50% hull or getting scanned.... Or on one painful occasion, both...

Here's a selection of my docking videos from the Buckybubble and others.

Here is an example of me in a hurry to get from a star to the station - for biological process purposes - I obviously can't use the ship's toilet because there is an exclusion zone around it after the particularly dodgy curry earlier! Time is of the essence....

I have some great pancake fails too since my Hotas X developed an intermittent downward thrust problem. There's nothing like pulling a manoeuvre just to discover your hardware isn't working at the crucial time :D

I made this noob docking guide some time ago. Video gets jumpy going into the station, not much I can do about that I'm afraid.

Don't have a video of it, but by far my best (luckiest) landing was coming in hot to an outpost with a breached hull. I had 10 seconds left when requested docking and came in so fast and panicked I didn't realize I was facing the wrong way! :O

Despite only using FA off in combat, I figured "what the heck? I either try this or die!". I came in, rotated upside down then FA-off flipped 180 vertically and SMASHED into that pad with 1 second left! Never again will I approach at the wrong angle after that haha

I wish, listening/watching an aftershow podcast with him and a few mates chatting. None of the voices are me, I was just following on youtube-live. :(

I'll just leave this here as an example of blatent self promo....... I mean as an example of how sometimes even though you're doing everything right, you can still fail a landing.

Incidentally, monumental props to the support staffers who took a look at this one and resolved it within a couple of hours of being reported at the time.

Your ship is made from tin-foil and explosives. Perhaps one of the lights on posts at all 4 corners of the landing pad skewered you right in the powerplant? :p

Ah well, cool video and good that support got you fixed up :)

Apparently it was a clipping issue...

But that sounds like handwavium for "we replaced your hull plating with mercury fulminate when you werent looking" :p

While I don't have the desire to go actually upload the video, I think everyone here has had the same experience.

Coming into land on a planetary base for whatever reason, never needed to look at the G ratings because all planets have been very low g since cruising in my sidey. This particular base is a couple earth g's, by the time I breach 3km this happens:

Me: "Looks like we're coming in a little hot, lets just put engines to full and fire up those reverse thrusters."
Computer: "Sir, thrusters are already firing at maximum sir. 1 km to destination"
Me: "Mother of God...."

My first time was in a DBX on my first landing in Mara, my first time out of the bubble and the furthest I've ever been without stopping. The best part is everyone has a diffferent mental image of this, but everyone seems to have at least one.

I have put together a short and crude montage of some notable launch and docking fails/wins from my last two or twenty attempts at the Okinura Station Sprint Challenge:

Another Buckyball race, another docking video. This one went rather well actually :D I do enjoy flying smaller ships, sure they bounce off the landing pads a lot more, but the thruster to mass ratio makes them so much more enjoyable. Especially at Outposts.
