💰 Don’t Give us Another Redundent Currency FD

I for one am looking forward to the new mats. Hopefully measured in grams as a nod back to '84. After all, I doubt any on-foot character is going to be hauling around Tons of LTD ;)

I can almost certainly speak for the community when I say “WE DONT WANT ANOTHER CURRENCY IN THE GAME “

No, no you can't.

Just fix the Credits currency.
Right after world leaders 'just fix global warming' :ROFLMAO:

In any sane economy, a spacesuit would be FAR cheaper than a FTL-capable starship. I fully expect a suit to cost a fraction of the cost of a Sidewinder, and I'd be disappointed if this were not the case. Too immersion-breaking.

That doesn't rule out the possibility of special "restricted military-grade" suits or whatever, unlocked with missions. Or suit engineering.

...Though I suppose the Remlok suit is very impressive tech. I regularly survive attacks that blow up my ship!

But we get one of those for free. Maybe the free Remlok suit and escape pod is is a more significant gift from the Pilots Federation than the free Sidewinder is.

That's a presumption where the only basis is in opinion, not in fact - as many other topics have shown, "we" don't all want the same things, it follows that we don't all "not want" the same things.

While I expect basic suits to be available for credits, I similarly expect suit engineering to require engineer unlocks and specific items, possibly new materials / data, to undertake modifications.

I take the introduction of engineering itself as precedent - as engineering does not use credits, it requires each player to spend time unlocking the engineers, gathering the required materials, and undertaking the modifications / experimental effects.

before materials, people where discussing the problem of credits, as credits lock content (ships).

fdev tackled that problem by raising the earning rate, which somewhat worked (if you want to fly a combat conda tomorrow, you can earn the credits today, and if you wanrt to own a FC, you can do so next week).

the credit inflation somehow leveled the playing field between people, that can or want to put many hours into the game, and those who can't/won't. a conda for everyone! of course that leads to some (many?) players being "rich" beyond usefullness.

materials don't lock content (ships). they give people, who like some kind of "progression game" but are rich-beyond-use, a different kind of "reward".

i fully expect fdev to go down that line with odyssee further, and i actually don't think it's bad (assuming we get mat traders...).

There's a thread here somewhere where Obsidian Ant explains his use of the word "currency" which started a lot of the currency whining talk wasn't referring to a new credit-style currency, but instead something more like materials or tech we need to find to exchange for upgrades. Cant be bothered looking for it.

I may be wrong (nothing unusual in that) but the only thing I have gathered, by inference, is that new engineers will be introduced for 'Footwear' - so concluded that Elite Feet would put these new materials on walkable surfaces...

After all, currently engineering mats are a currency in themselves separate from credits 🤷‍♂️

I should add that materials aren't redundant by the way. Materials will forever be in demand. It's probably the main reason fdev are likely to use them again... As opposed to credits, which are subjectively redundant.

Credits are also trivially transferable between CMDRs, unlike materials / data.

Y'know, if they did a really good storyline with an economic crash and several CGs to go along with it. I'd eat a major reduction to my fortune.

Suppose there's no new currency. I see the following alternatives.

Top end space suits cost considerably more than ships.
Top end space suits cost practically nothing and can be maxed out by new players in an afternoon.
Space suit components are rare and gameplay is extended hunting for them
A complete rehash of the whole way we earn credits and materials.

New currency it is then.

Yeah, but...

The only way I see to fix credits is to take control myself and simply do a CMDR wipe, which is exactly what I plan to do when Odyssey arrives...

I only restarted the game about a month ago and I already have more credits than I really know what to do with. It seems I have to deliberately avoid numerous areas of the game to slow things down.

Whatever this new currency entails I plan to experience it with a poor CMDR.
